Chapter 1081 She Doesn't Want to Be the Executioner
Jane looked at Anthony, who was talking to the obstetrician not far away, and suspected that everything today was just a test from Anthony.
He had touched her lower abdomen and talked to her about the child, just to lower her psychological defenses and find out her true thoughts about the child, and also to make her realize her true feelings.
Jane confessed that she had a hard time bringing herself to terminate a new life.
She wasn't willing to become the one to take a life.
That would make her conscience uneasy and her heart full of guilt for the rest of her life.
Aurora and Hubert's wedding was approaching quickly.
It was unclear whether it was because of the tight schedule and the inability to book a suitable high-end hotel, or out of a desire to show off, but Hubert's wedding was held at the Clark Manor.
Logically, only the weddings of the heirs were qualified to be held at the Clark Manor.
However, Hubert, being the first of his generation in the Clark family to get married, could indeed apply to hold the wedding at the Clark Manor if he was unashamed enough.
Jane stepped out of the stretch Lincoln in a coral blue dress, with Anthony opening the door for her.
Almost the moment she and Anthony got out of the car, they attracted everyone's attention.
The surrounding murmurs were incessant:
"Why is Jane here?"
"The rumors about Jane and Anthony rekindling their old flame are actually true. I didn't believe it at first."
"Look, Jane is wearing flat shoes. She must be pregnant."
"Jane is still in such good shape even though she's pregnant. Amazing! That's so her!"
"There's going to be a good show today. I thought only Anthony and Aurora's side would be interesting, but now that Jane is here, I want to see Ann and Aurora's reactions."
"It's been a long time since we've seen such an exciting scene!"
"Is Jane's outfit today a limited edition? I tried to order it before but couldn't."
"It must be Mr. Clark who bought it for Jane. But it's just as well you didn't get it. Anyone who wears the same clothes as Jane will look ugly in comparison."
"True."
"Anthony, I thought you wouldn't come." Hubert, as the groom, was dressed particularly grandly today, with the bride Aurora on his arm.
Hubert acted as if he were the host here.
Hubert's gaze fell on Jane, and he said meaningfully, "Ms. Watkins, I didn't expect to see you here. I heard Ann isn't very pleased with you. Aren't you afraid of embarrassing yourself by showing up at my wedding?"
Jane was unmoved by Hubert's sarcasm.
In her eyes, Hubert was just a fool with more courage than brains, someone not worth bothering about.
Anthony's expression had already turned cold, and he tightly held Jane's hand, his intention to protect her couldn't be more obvious. "Hubert, behave yourself, or whether this wedding can proceed smoothly will be a problem."
This was a warning to Hubert that since he borrowed the Clark Manor for his wedding, he had better behave, as Anthony was in charge of matters at the Clark Manor.
Hubert's face turned ugly, and he said no more.
The people from the second branch of the Clark family also sensed Anthony's warning and could only swallow their anger.
"Where do you want to go? I'll accompany you." Anthony led Jane inside, and anyone who tried to flatter Anthony along the way was dismissed by him.
He only wanted to be with Jane now.
The Clark Manor was filled with champagne-colored roses, exuding a romantic wedding atmosphere.
Hubert and Aurora had already had a son, so the wedding did not have a grand ceremony. They just decorated the Clark Manor to look like a wedding venue for a reception to thank their guests.
Jane had no fondness for the Clark Manor. The last time she was here was for Anthony and Aurora's engagement party, where she endured Ann's veiled sarcasm.
"I want to sit somewhere quiet," Jane said.
"Okay." Anthony took Jane to a scenic annex. After a while, a servant came to inform Anthony that Ann was looking for him.
Anthony frowned and looked at Jane.
Jane pretended not to hear anything and casually picked up a magazine next to the sofa to read.
"You stay here for a bit. I'll be back soon." Anthony said to Jane, then cupped the back of her head and kissed her on the lips.
Before Jane could frown, Anthony had already followed the servant, instructing others as he left. "You all stay with Ms. Watkins. Without her permission, no one is allowed to approach, no matter who it is."
"Yes, Sir." The servants and bodyguards nodded respectfully.
Anthony's "no matter who it is" clearly included Ann.
Anthony followed the servant to Ann, asking as they walked, "Does my mom know Jane is here?"
"Yes." The servant replied nervously, noting that Ann's face was particularly grim.
Anthony nodded.
Ann was the matriarch of the Clark family and the groom's aunt today, playing the role of both host and eldership, mingling with the guests.
From a distance, Anthony saw a young woman standing next to Ann. The woman had a graceful smile and an elegant demeanor, looking somewhat familiar.
"Anthony, come here." Ann called to Anthony with a smile, showing no sign of anger over Anthony bringing Jane to the mansion.
When Anthony approached, Ann introduced the girl beside her, "This is Delilah. Do you remember her?"
Anthony looked at Delilah indifferently.
Delilah raised her head gracefully and said to Ann, "Mrs. Clark, you might not know, but Mr. Clark and I have met before."
"Oh?" Ann looked surprised and delighted, clearly interested.
Delilah glanced at Anthony and said, "I was studying with Benjamin before, and not long ago, Benjamin visited Mr. Clark's company, and I was with him."
"What a coincidence, that's fate!" Ann said happily, "Anthony, you wouldn't have forgotten, would you? Ms. Johnson's grandmother used to be our neighbor, and she would come here every summer when you were kids."
Anthony indeed didn't remember, not even a bit.
It was clear that Ann liked Delilah and wanted to match her with Anthony.
Even though Anthony had brought Jane today, Ann's behavior was clearly intended to embarrass Jane.
The guests exchanged glances, thinking that Ann really disliked Jane.
"Since you two are fated and both young, Anthony, why don't you show Ms. Johnson around?" Ann suggested.
Delilah's parents were abroad, and her presence today was not only as the daughter of the Johnson family but also representing them. It made sense for Anthony to host her.
Everyone thought Anthony wouldn't refuse.
It was just unfortunate for Jane, who was pregnant, to watch the father of her child with another woman.
Delilah smiled and was about to thank him.
Before she could speak, he said, "Sorry, I'm busy."
Delilah was embarrassed.
Ann controlled her expression and questioned, "You're busy? Anthony, what could you possibly be busy with right now?"
Anthony looked at Ann calmly. "I thought you knew."
She knew?
Knew what? That Anthony wanted to be with Jane?
She didn't want Anthony to be with Jane, which was why she asked him to keep Delilah company!
