Chapter 459

Lucas wisely decided to end the topic.

"Lucas, that classmate was so strange," Lilian remarked, remembering the boy's smile.

"What's in it? Confections?" Lucas changed the subject, holding Lilian's small bag in his hand. "It looks good when you wear it!"

Lilian, unimpressed by his lack of aesthetic sense, scorned him silently.

It was Lilian's first time in a domestic hospital, or rather, accompanying someone at a hospital.

From the moment they started registering, she watched everything with earnest interest, asking Lucas for an explanation whenever she didn't understand something.

There were many tests to be done; complete blood counts, lymph node ultrasounds, and bone marrow aspirations.

When Lucas needed to take off his jacket, Lilian stood by, obediently holding his clothes, making the examining doctor smile.

"Is she your girlfriend?"

"No, she's not," Lilian replied politely.

"You're very patient!" the doctor praised, smiling. Before leaving, he whispered to Lucas, "Good luck! You should marry a pretty girl like her. Your kids will indeed be gorgeous!"

Lucas looked speechlessly at the doctor, who seemed to be in his fifties yet was keen on gossip. His heart rate inadvertently sped up, but he pretended like he didn't hear anything. His eyes uncontrollably glanced at Lilian's face.

She was indeed beautiful.

"Quick, quick, make way!"

"Make way!"

Just after leaving the examination room, a loud commotion suddenly erupted in the corridor. A group of doctors and nurses were hastening a hospital bed toward the emergency room at high speed.

Whispers from the families of other patients were overheard.

"That one was discharged a year ago. It's a relapse!"

"A relapse? How pitiful! They'll likely not make it."

"Indeed, I've heard that their family is already preparing for the worst."

"At least they lived an extra year. There was someone in our ward who died during chemotherapy. Such a shame!"

Lucas stood frozen, and it took several seconds for him to come back to reality from the tugging at his sleeve.

"Lucas, what's wrong?" Lilian asked, tilting her little head upward. As a patient walked by, she courteously stepped aside.

Lucas looked at her, remaining motionless for quite some time.

Afterward, they proceeded to the doctor's office.

"Lucas, you seem a bit down." The attending physician looked at Lucas's reports and nodded with satisfaction. "Not bad. All your indicators are within the normal range. Our hospital will continue to look for a suitable bone marrow donor for you, as a bone marrow transplant is the most reliable treatment plan. Remember to inform your family about your condition, and I'll also speak to Dr. Rosy from the neurology department, okay?"

"Uh-huh, thank you," Lucas responded indifferently.

On the way out of the hospital, they came across several leukemia patients. Lilian, out of politeness, didn't stare, but Lucas noticed her discreet glances, fueled by curiosity.

"That's how I used to be," Lucas revealed once they had left the hematology department.

"How so?" Lilian turned to ask Lucas. However, she didn't notice the steps below and stumbled.

Lucas had quick reflexes, so he caught her in his arms. By the time Lilian realized what had happened, she had already fallen into Lucas's embrace.
Married to an Ugly Husband? No!
