Chapter 1079 Paying the Price

"Mr. Clark, we found out who leaked Ms. Watkins' information to Mrs. Clark," Clint respectfully said as he stood beside Anthony.

Anthony looked up, his gaze shifting from the document to Clint.

Clint felt the chill in Anthony's eyes and lowered his head, saying, "It was Mrs. Miller from the Miller family at Emerald Gardens. She visited Mrs. Clark a few days ago. From Sadie's tone, it seems Mrs. Miller wanted to curry favor, thinking Mrs. Clark would accept Ms. Watkins because of her pregnancy."

"Foolish woman!" Anthony cursed under his breath.

Clint dared not speak.

It was indeed foolish; how could she marry into the Miller family with those few brain cells of hers?

"Leak the information to the Miller family and let them handle it themselves."

Anthony had no interest in dealing with troublesome women, but that didn't mean they could mess with Jane freely.

"Yes, sir," Clint replied.

In the afternoon, the sun was shining brightly.

Jane was taking her usual walk near Emerald Gardens, planning to stroll around twice before going back for a nap.

Just then, a woman suddenly appeared.

"Ms. Watkins!"

The woman lunged straight at Jane, but before she could react, the maid swiftly shielded Jane and expertly restrained the woman's hands behind her back.

The technique was professional, the movements quick.

Jane looked at the maid in surprise.

The maid smiled and explained, "Ms. Watkins, Mr. Clark had someone teach us basic self-defense and combat skills to better protect your safety."

"Oh." Jane nodded, not saying much more.

She just thought this maid was knowledgeable and could even act as a half-bodyguard. If Anthony didn't pay her more than that damn planning team, it would be a disservice to her.

"Ms. Watkins! Ms. Watkins, please forgive me! I didn't mean it; I was trying to help you!"

The completely restrained woman looked up and tearfully pleaded with Jane, not caring that the maid was holding her like a criminal.

"Ava." Jane didn't expect to see a familiar face.

Ava was crying with tears streaming down her face, a prominent handprint visible on her cheek. She looked completely devoid of her previous grace and wealth.

Jane gestured to the maid, who released Ava but remained vigilant, keeping Jane protected behind her.

"Ms. Watkins, please forgive me! I didn't mean to cause you trouble!" she cried out.

"I don't understand what you're talking about." Jane frowned.

Ava hurriedly explained, "Ann found out you live here because I told her. But I didn't mean for her to cause you trouble; I was trying to mediate between you two. I just wanted to use this to gain favor with my husband. You don't know, my husband has many mistresses outside, and his heart isn't with me. Now he's angry with me because of this and wants to divorce me. What will I do if we divorce? I will have no job, no income, no social status. Ms. Watkins, please forgive me, I'm begging you!"

"What do you want me to do to forgive you?" Jane said, "Honestly, if you hadn't come to me today, I wouldn't have known you were the one who told Ann."

Ava, as if grasping at a lifeline, brightened and tried to grab Jane's hand, but the maid firmly blocked her.

She continued pleading, "Ms. Watkins, please talk to Mr. Clark and ask him not to take it out on my husband because of this. Or talk to my husband and ask him not to divorce me!"

Jane had seen many strange things in her social circle, but she was still shocked by Ava's words.

She said, "That's your husband. Why should I talk to him about your marriage? As for Anthony, Ava, first, we don't have a close relationship. Second, your actions have brought a very negative impact on my life and reputation. Why do you think I would plead with Anthony for you?"

Jane actually disliked Ava's mindset even more.

To please a husband who didn't love or respect her by casually selling out someone else's information was a character flaw.

Trying to gain favor by selling information without understanding the situation was a sign of a lack of intelligence.

In short, she was a foolish woman!

"Ms. Watkins, Mr. Clark loves you so much; you can't understand what it's like for a woman whose husband is tired of her," Ava cried.

Jane corrected her. "Ava, if you don't save yourself, no one will save you. Women are never just an attachment to men. The reason you feel helpless now is because you lack self-identity. I can't understand you because I have my own independent personality and career. I can support myself."

Jane would never compromise for a wealthy life.

Because she had the ability to make money herself!

Jane already knew the ins and outs of the matter and the reason Ava came to her, so she lost interest in staying any longer.

"Ms. Watkins!" Ava cried out.

"That's enough. Instead of talking to me, you should go to Anthony. I had no involvement in this matter from start to finish."

"Ms. Watkins, aren't you curious about what Mr. Clark did to the Miller family?" The maid glanced at Jane, but Jane's face remained calm.

"Not curious." Jane looked at the road ahead, "No matter what I say, it won't change what Anthony has already done to the Miller family. Mr. Miller is notoriously unfaithful and kept Ava as his wife only to avoid the stigma of abandoning her. This incident just gave their marriage a reason to end. Besides, everyone must take responsibility for the path they choose."

The maid sighed silently. If Jane were curious, she could hint that Jane should ask Mr. Clark what happened, thus breaking the cold war between them.

Unfortunately, Jane lived too transparently, giving no room for manipulation.

Within a few days, news of the Miller family's divorce spread in the South City. The night the news broke, Mr. Miller brought a woman ten years younger than him into Emerald Gardens.

Jane's judgment was entirely correct; Mr. Miller had long wanted to divorce Ava and marry a younger woman.

Throughout the whole process, Anthony showed no signs of being involved with the Miller family's affairs, as if it had nothing to do with him.

Anthony's ability to hide his emotions had grown even stronger.

"What's wrong?" At the dining table, Anthony noticed Jane looking at him almost immediately.

Jane put down her utensils. "So, your solution was to let the Miller family bear the consequences?"

Her words were vague, but Anthony understood.

Regarding Ann's trouble, Jane had two requests: to meet Jovan and to terminate the pregnancy. Neither request was something Anthony would agree to. And the Miller family happened to be related to the matter.

"They're just paying the price they deserve," Anthony didn't think Ava's current situation could make up for the harm Jane had suffered.

Even though he had kept Jane's pregnancy a secret within the South City, and people wouldn't gossip about it, their jealousy and mockery were still evident.

Before Jane could speak, Anthony added, "But Jane, don't even think about an abortion."

Married to an Ugly Husband? No!
