Chapter 1134 Starting Over, Okay?
"Anthony, every time we think about that child, we feel a deep sense of guilt and torment," Jane said.
During her recovery, Jane was awakened by nightmares several nights, covered in blood, with the sound of wailing echoing in her ears, leading to sleepless nights.
But she never told anyone about this; she endured it all by herself.
"Jane, don't talk to me about this," Anthony said forcefully and coldly. That child could never have been born healthy. I don't believe the excuses you made."
Jane's body stiffened sharply. "You found out? Well, that's reasonable; you could easily figure out the whole story with a little investigation."
'No wonder Aurora has been sent to a mental hospital now.' Jane thought.
She said, "But Anthony, the child is gone, and the reasons don't matter anymore. His absence is a fact, and it's a hurdle I can't overcome. I really don't want this relationship anymore. Can you let me go and let yourself go too?"
"How can I let myself go?" Anthony felt that Jane was very unfamiliar at this moment.
When Jane was young, her passion for love was as intense as a bright and flamboyant rose. She taught Anthony what it meant to like someone, what love was, and what it meant to be unforgettable. But now, she seemed to have lost the warmth of those feelings.
Jane seemed to guess what he was thinking. "Anthony, when I think about our past, it's like a fishbone stuck in my throat. It hurts, and I don't want it anymore. Do you understand?"
Sometimes, Jane even felt that she had lost the ability to feel love.
For the past few years, she had been entangled with Anthony. Now that Jovan was back, she wanted to start a new life.
Jane pushed Anthony away, breaking free from his embrace. "Anthony, you can think me selfish. I was the one who dragged you into this mess in the first place. I'm sorry."
Anthony stared at Jane, his eyes full of obsession and stubbornness.
Jane calmly met Anthony's gaze.
After two seconds, Anthony raised his hand, placing his palm over his eyes.
The conversation that overwhelmed Anthony emotionally was Jane's simple apology, "I'm sorry." The proud Jane humbled herself, all to bring their relationship to a close.
Selfish? Anthony never thought Jane was selfish.
If Jane's actions were considered selfish, then what was Anthony's refusal to let go?
'Jane doesn't want this relationship anymore, fine. But how about starting over?' Anthony thought to himself.
Calvin and Lester sat quietly in the car.
Jane was driving, and at a red light, she glanced at Calvin. "So, are you already thinking about how many bags to buy to make it up to me?"
Calvin, seeing that Jane's attitude towards him was as usual, discreetly breathed a sigh of relief and put on his playful mask again.
"This isn't entirely my fault. Am I on the same level as Anthony? If I got involved, I'd just be asking for trouble." Calvin glanced at Jane. "You should have come yourself. I was just dragged into this by you."
As they passed a corner, Jane made a sharp turn, startling the unprepared Calvin.
"Jane, are you trying to kill me?" Calvin asked.
Lester, sitting in the back, remained calm. He was used to Jane's driving.
"I shouldn't have bothered with you. I should have just picked up Lester!" Jane reasoned with Calvin. "If I hadn't attended your birthday, I wouldn't have met Anthony. If I hadn't met Anthony, my bag wouldn't have been taken by him. So, it's originally your fault."
"Fine, it's my fault." Calvin nodded perfunctorily, his face saying, "I can't reason with women."
"Say what you want to say, don't hold back." Jane noticed Calvin glancing at her several times, wanting to speak.
"Then I'll say it." Calvin cautiously observed Jane's expression. "What did you talk about with Anthony? Are you two getting back together? What's your relationship now?"
"We didn't talk about anything, not getting back together; we have no relationship."
Jane had already guessed Calvin would ask about this and skillfully denied everything.
Calvin said, "Jane, you might not know, but when you're uneasy, you like to deny things."
"Shut up." Jane glared at Calvin.
Calvin looked awkward.
"Where are you going? Back to the Green family? I'll kindly give you a ride today," Jane said.
"To my apartment," Calvin replied.
Jane turned left at the intersection, heading towards Calvin's apartment, and casually asked, "Haven't you been home for a while?"
Calvin's father mentioned this when he visited Jovan a few days ago.
Calvin leaned against the car door nonchalantly. "There is that little star keeping my dad company; I don't need to go back."
When Jane was young, she sometimes envied other families with both parents because she had no memory of her mother, and her father was barely involved in her life. She was curious about what it was like to have parents. Growing up, she realized that in this circle, eight out of ten parents were unhappy.
She and Jovan couldn't even be considered unfortunate. At least they didn't have to face situations like Calvin's. His father was a playboy, with mistresses causing constant trouble.
Just thinking about going back to that place made her feel disgusted.
Jane dropped Calvin off at his apartment building. Lester politely got off at a nearby subway station and took the subway home.
The confined space of the car suddenly felt lonely, with only the sound of Jane's breathing and her presence.
She suddenly felt a sense of loss.
Parking the car in an open area, Jane opened her bag and carefully checked its contents.
Her work notebook, lipstick, powder, and makeup mirror were still there, as were her bank card and a small amount of cash. Only one thing was missing: the sapphire cufflink.
Jane checked several times, confirming that the sapphire cufflink was indeed gone.
She had specifically placed the cufflink in a corner of her bag to avoid losing it. The only possibility was that Anthony had taken it.
He took it without telling her.
"Anthony, you bastard!" Jane cursed under her breath.
But at this point, she couldn't possibly call Anthony and ask him to return the sapphire cufflink.
Jane could already guess that if she called Anthony, he probably wouldn't admit to taking the cufflink, and then they would have to discuss its ownership.
They would be entangled again.
Forget it. Let the cufflink be a farewell token.
