Chapter 971: Why Are You Crying?

"Mrs. Lopez, Ms. Watkins almost went into shock last night. We found the item in Ms. Watkins' room that caused her near-shock. We..." Sadie explained.

"You suspect my daughter did it?" Donna immediately caught on, "What a joke! Everyone in the circle knows that the Watkins family has always targeted Shirley. Who knows if this is a setup? Besides, Jane’s current status isn't worth Shirley harming her, nor is it worth our family taking responsibility."

Anthony darkened his eyes, which became a deep abyss.

Everyone was using Jane's current family background as leverage.

Because apart from that, there was nothing else to go on.

Sadie keenly noticed Anthony's change in mood. Smiling, she repeated to these people what Anthony had just told Aurora and Ann about the relationships between Natalie, Flora, and Jane, and the stakes involving the Windsor Group, the RisingKing Group, and Jane.

Shirley and Donna changed their faces dramatically.

"I'll call Shirley's father. There must be some misunderstanding." Hearing the Windsor Group and RisingKing Group, Donna panicked and instinctively sought Shirley's father for advice.

"Mrs. Lopez, wait a moment." Anthony stopped her, "This matter will be handled as it should be. Calling Mr. Lopez won't help."

In other words, even if Donna called for backup, if Shirley did something wrong, no one could save her.

"Shirley, what happened?" Donna held Shirley's hand. "I know you. You're willful, but you would never risk others’ lives. Tell me what happened."

Everyone was looking at Shirley, and she felt their gazes like mountains pressing down on her.

Especially Anthony's eyes, which seemed like a poisoned knife hanging over her head, ready to fall at any moment.

Unable to bear the pressure, Shirley almost cried as she confessed, "I just put some powder on Jane’s bed. I just wanted her to suffer a bit because she kept mocking me again and again. But I didn't want to kill her!"

"Shirley, how could you be so reckless?" Aurora was shocked and heartbroken. "Last night, Jane went into shock and needed oxygen. We were all terrified. Luckily, we found out in time, otherwise..."

Otherwise, Natalie and Flora would have come to Allentown and turned it upside down.

Anthony's gaze grew even darker, his whole demeanor like a layer of ice.

Shirley felt that Anthony's look was no different from looking at prey, so she cried out in fear and clang to Donna, asking what to do.

"Mrs. Clark and Mr. Clark, Shirley just wanted to play a prank. She didn't mean to harm Jane. She's crying out of fear. Can we just let this go?" Donna tried to negotiate.

Sadie looked on calmly, but if anyone looked closely, he could see the disdain in her eyes.

Shirley’s crying had no direct connection with her almost killing someone. She was crying because she was afraid of being held accountable, not because she felt guilty for harming Jane!

"Anthony, can we just let this go?" Aurora tried to speak up, "Look, Ms. Watkins is no longer in danger. Shirley can apologize to Ms. Watkins. We can call it even. What do you think?"

Aurora gave Shirley a look.

Shirley immediately said, "Yes! I'll go apologize to Jane right now. I didn't mean it!"

Anthony hadn't said a word yet, but Shirley and Aurora were already trying to settle the matter.

"Jane is just being delicate to need an apology. She almost caused Aurora to miscarry and never apologized!" Ann said unhappily.

If Anthony had been cold before, he was now downright grim.

Anthony didn't hide his mocking gaze. "Ann, by your logic, Aurora’s pregnancy is fine, so why are you holding Jane accountable?"

Ann was furious but speechless.

"You, come out." Anthony pointed at Shirley.

Shirley didn't dare go out alone with Anthony and looked to Donna for help, clutching her hand tightly.

Donna didn't even get a chance to interrupt before Anthony's look stopped her.

Here, calling Anthony a tyrant who always got his way wouldn't be an exaggeration. The only one who could somewhat restrain him, Ann, chose to stay out of it because she knew they were in the wrong and feared Natalie and Flora causing trouble.

"Mr. Clark, I didn't mean to harm Jane. I didn't know it would be so serious." Shirley started crying as soon as she stepped out, speaking through her tears. "When I bought that itching powder, the seller said it would only last a few hours and wouldn't be life-threatening."

Anthony frowned.

The most common ingredients of the itching powder were industrial rock wool, taro, geranium leaves, peach fuzz, and soapberry, none of which include mung bean powder.

"What kind of itching powder did you buy?" Anthony asked.

"This one." Shirley opened her purchase history, repeatedly saying she didn't know Jane would go into shock.

‘Others have no major issues, so why did Jane almost go into shock? She must be overly sensitive!’ Shirley pondered.

The itching powder Shirley bought was mainly composed of rock wool, which couldn't be mung bean powder. However, the powder Clint found on Jane's bed was entirely mung bean powder.

"Mr. Clark, don't look at me like that." His gaze was terrifying.

Anthony continued to question Shirley, "Before you sprinkled the powder on Jane’s bed, did anyone else handle it?"

"No one else," Shirley said.

Ten minutes later, Anthony brought Shirley to Jane's room.

Jane was eating chocolate cake, made from glutinous flour, fragrant and sticky. The best chocolate worldwide was used for this cake.

Shirley entered crying, smelling the sweet aroma, and felt even more aggrieved.

"Why are you crying?" Jane swallowed her chocolate cake and calmly looked at Shirley. "Can you wipe your nose? I dislike the people with untidy appearances."

"Jane!" Anthony's tone was slightly heavier.

Jane didn't care about what others said and waited for Shirley to gather herself and speak.

"I'm sorry, Jane. I didn't mean to harm you. Please forgive me. I don't want any trouble. I'm an only child from a wealthy family, and my life is just beginning. I..."

"Stop." Jane couldn't listen anymore, "Shirley, are you here to show off? My family went bankrupt, and you're emphasizing your wealthy status in front of me?"

Shirley suddenly realized and apologized, "I'm sorry."

"Forget it, just leave. Try not to show up in front of me again." Jane waved her hand, annoyed that Shirley was interrupting her snack time. This cake was something Billy had sent over later, and she had loved it since she was a child.
