Chapter 311 Can We Get Back Together Please?
Under the clear midnight sky, the stars twinkled brilliantly.
Anthony awoke to this mesmerizing scene in the middle of the night. His fever had swiftly subsided thanks to the treatment, and he finally regained his strength. When he caught sight of a human-shaped lump on the pull-out bed to his left, he called out, “Clint?”
The figure remained motionless.
With a frown, Anthony raised his voice and called out again, "Clint."
Annoyed by the disturbance, the person beneath the covers stretched an arm out and swatted the air as though trying to dismiss the voice that interrupted her peaceful slumber.
"Don’t disturb me!" The voice was unmistakably feminine and familiar, but it lacked the domineering tone it usually carried when the speaker was awake. At this moment, the voice sounded softer and gentler.
Anthony was dumbfounded. The hand was slender and pale, unmistakably that of a woman. Moreover, that voice belonged to Jane.
How many mornings had he woken to that voice in the past? Even the words ‘don’t disturb me’ were the same.
Jane had been spoiled and pampered since childhood, prone to laziness in the mornings and often cranky upon waking.
Anthony had once made futile attempts to alter her habit of sleeping late. Whenever he urged her to rise for school or breakfast, she would greet him with a scowl. Nonetheless, he had always found her adorable and coquettish, which melted his heart.
In the two years since they had parted, he had longed to see that grumpy expression again, but it was out of his reach.
Why was Jane here?
The vivid and beautiful dream Anthony had the previous night flashed through his mind.
He thought, ‘Was that not a dream? Could it be real?’
Anthony hastily detached the IV drip from his hand. Walking barefoot and with the utmost care, he approached and gently lifted the soft blanket covering her.
Jane's peaceful, sleeping visage came into view, her lovely face nestled in the blanket. It was difficult to reconcile this vulnerable sight with the once unruly Miss Watkins of the Watkins family.
After confirming that she was still deeply asleep and unlikely to wake up, he sighed in relief. He crouched down next to her bed and stared at her silently. He felt that he could spend an eternity just watching her like this.
"Don’t disturb me." Jane frowned impatiently and swatted away the hand that disturbed her sleep.
It was only then that Anthony realized he had unknowingly traced her face with his fingers. He suppressed a smile and continued to caress her face despite not wanting to interrupt her sleep.
Jane, ever so sensitive to disturbances during sleep, muttered in annoyance, "Stop it, Anthony."
After her complaint, she instinctively pulled the covers closer, seeking refuge from the disturbance.
Anthony was momentarily stunned. ‘She… She called my name.'
She had uttered his name.
In her sleep, she called his name without the usual sarcastic tone when she was awake.
For a moment, it felt as if time had rolled back two years, to the days of their mornings when he would wake her up. It was as though nothing had changed between them.
The warmth of their conversation and her soft embrace from the previous night lingered in his mind.
With care, Anthony pulled back the covers to expose her face and leaned in to place a kiss on her cheek before he asked, “Can we get back together please?”
Jane reacted instinctively and slapped him.
Anthony thought, ‘Well, this isn’t the first time… No one but her can hit me like that…’
Looking at Jane, he quietly answered his own question, "Alright, it’s decided. We’re getting back together."
