Chapter 343 Darker by the Description
Unbeknownst to Oliver himself, his voice had taken on a deep timbre, his tone gentle, exuding an air of helpless and indulgent persuasion.
In the aftermath of Natalie's unintentional harm, the security personnel of The Rosewood Estate had been replaced. Despite never having laid eyes on the estate's mistress, these new guards were acutely aware of the importance of Natalie's safety. Not a single strand of her hair was to be harmed.
However, the whispers of the Oliver's dalliance with Susan had reached their ears. It was not uncommon for men of wealth and influence to have extramarital affairs, but it was indeed rare for the new paramour to appear on the doorstep just as the legal wife had returned home.
"Oliver, I'm sorry," Susan managed to catch Oliver outside, her voice laced with guilt, her head lowered in shame.
She added, "I didn't expect Natalie to be so upset. The fashion show today left me paralyzed with fear, which is why I couldn't move. If I had known it was just an illusion caused by fear, I wouldn't have said those things to you."
Oliver stood by the car, one hand casually tucked into his pocket, his face a mask of indifference as he listened to Susan's explanations.
In truth, he had no desire to hear her excuses. A hint of annoyance crept in, and he felt the urge to smoke. However, considering the detrimental effects of secondhand smoke, he quashed the idea, a habit he had developed during his time with Natalie.
Susan said, "Oliver, I thought you had already clarified our relationship to Natalie, so she wouldn't be upset. Besides, she... she seems to be on good terms with Mr. Wild as well..."
Inside the car, separated by the one-way transparent glass, Natalie raised an eyebrow at Susan's words and rolled down the window. "Susan, do you understand my relationship with Mr. Wild? Are you familiar with both me and him?"
"Natalie, why are you..." Susan stumbled back in panic.
"Why am I here?" Natalie finished her sentence, a smile playing on her lips. "I've been here all along, you just didn't notice."
Susan darted a quick glance at Oliver before turning back to Natalie. "Natalie, please don't misunderstand. I didn't mean to imply anything between you and Mr. Wild, I was just..."
"Just what?" Natalie cut her off. "Susan, it seems like you're making things up."
"Oliver..." Susan turned to Oliver, her eyes pleading for his support, as if Natalie was being unreasonable.
Oliver, knowing Susan well, failed to pick up on the subtle insinuations in her words. Instead, he thought Natalie was being pushy - a common misconception among men.
Indeed, Oliver was oblivious to it, but he found Natalie's articulation impressive. So what? His woman even scolded him when she was angry, how could she possibly show kindness to others, or allow anyone else to be treated kindly?
"Susan," Oliver finally broke his silence.
Susan's eyes lit up, her gaze fixed on Oliver with anticipation, hoping he would come to her defense. However, as soon as Oliver spoke, her expression froze.
Oliver said, "You can address Mrs. Windsor, like everyone else does."
Natalie was astonished and looked taken aback at Oliver.
Had he just humiliated Susan?
"I'm… I'm sorry, Oliver. I forgot earlier..." Susan's eyes welled up with tears as she addressed Natalie as 'Mrs. Windsor' in a last-ditch effort.
Natalie thought, 'I can't handle this nonsense act.'
For her innate good manners, she didn't say those words out.
