Chapter 493
"What about Miss Aurora?" Oliver reminded him.
"She's not," Anthony declared.
"It doesn't matter if she is or isn't. What's important is that if you don't cooperate with me today, Aurora might run into a bit of trouble," Oliver said smoothly, his tone nothing like a threat.
But the message was clear. Paykston was his turf, and Anthony's influence only stretched to the southwest.
Using Aurora as a pawn against Anthony in Paykston wouldn't be a difficult move. Unless, of course, Anthony didn't care about Aurora at all.
"Are you trying to threaten me with Aurora?" Anthony's expression grew increasingly sour.
Oliver chimed in, "As part of the deal, I'll let you know once Jane has left the Rosewood Estate. Mr. Clark, it's always easier to deal with people when they're not right on your doorstep."
Five minutes later, sure enough, when Jane stepped outside, Anthony was nowhere to be seen.
"How did you get him to leave?" Jane asked, curious.
"Made a little trade."
Jane wasn't interested in the specifics of the deal.
"Why didn't Natalie call me instead of you dropping by?" Jane inquired, her intuition tingling as she raised an eyebrow. "Did you guys have a fight?"
Oliver feigned sleep, keeping his eyes closed—not a peep from him.
Silence filled the plush interior of the Rolls-Royce.
It wasn't until they entered the gates of Rosewood Estate that Oliver asked her, "Is there any way to change Natalie's mind?"
"Change Natalie's mind?" Jane chuckled at the question. "You know, you're the first one to ever ask me that. Want to know why?"
She didn't wait for Oliver to respond and continued, "Because once Natalie makes up her mind on something big, she never goes back."
"Madam, Miss Jane is here," Mr. Liam interrupted, pulling Natalie's attention away from her book.
Natalie looked up, a bright smile overtaking her face. "Jane?"
"Yes, Master thought you might be bored, so he personally invited Miss Jane over to keep you company," Mr. Liam responded.
Jane didn't pry into whatever was happening between Natalie and Oliver. Instead, she asked about Natalie's leg.
Not wanting to worry her friend, Natalie fibbed, saying it was just a little accident.
After hours of heart-to-heart conversations, Natalie's mood significantly lifted, especially when she got wind of some juicy gossip.
"Susan might truly be in serious trouble this time," Jane shared. As always, she was well-informed about the circulating rumors.
"Why?" Natalie had a hunch it might be tied to her schemes.
Jane's eyes gleamed with malicious delight.
"Rumor has it that Susan has made a powerful enemy. She was caught red-handed engaging in some nefarious activities—harming disabled individuals and engaging in theft, no less.
“The Hastings family is powerful, and they have their set of conservative individuals who were just waiting for Susan to make a misstep.
“Now that they've got evidence against her, it's all coming back to haunt her, especially after that plagiarism scandal involving Flora. I bet there are a few in the Hastings family who are having a good laugh.
“The scandal is out, and everyone is buzzing about it. They're tearing her apart, questioning what kind of person resorts to theft when their family is immensely wealthy. Picking on people is one thing, but going after someone with a disability? That's truly hitting a new low."
Natalie cast a meaningful look at her legs.
