Chapter 958: Taking Sides
Jane said she didn't want to apply the ointment, but in the end, she gave in.
Sadie reminded Jane that if she didn't apply the ointment properly, it might leave a scar.
Jane hated any scars on her skin. She was also afraid of pain and didn't want to undergo any cosmetic procedures.
Jane took off her clothes and lay on the guest room bed, letting Sadie apply the ointment. She still couldn't help but struggle. "Will it really leave a scar if I don't use the ointment?"
Jane used to apply ointment whenever she got hurt, with Anthony persuading her to do so. However, when she was younger, due to the difference between boys and girls, Anthony would supervise the maids at home to apply the ointment for her.
Jane's common sense told her that if she didn't use the ointment, it would leave a scar. If that were the case, cosmetic clinics wouldn't be as sparsely populated as they are now and they'd be as crowded as pediatric clinics.
But Jane didn't dare to take risks with her skin.
Sadie rarely saw such childishness from Jane and smiled. "Mr. Clark specifically instructed me to choose an ointment that promotes skin recovery because he knows you care about your appearance."
Anthony's exact words were ‘Jane is a peacock.’
Jane responded, still feeling uneasy about Anthony's special attention. After a couple of seconds, she said to Sadie, "Then apply a bit more for me, please."
Sadie agreed with a smile, thinking that applying more or less of the ointment wouldn't make a difference.
Sadie had learned specialized massage techniques, and the ointment needed to be applied with massage to promote blood circulation and reduce bruising effectively. She moved methodically and casually asked, "Ms. Watkins, aren't you curious about what Mr. Clark is doing upstairs?"
"Why should I be curious about a fiancé visiting his fiancée? I don't want to be the one to ruin others’..." Jane stopped herself from saying "family".
Jane turned her face to the side and asked Sadie, "Sadie, don't you feel resentful or unbalanced taking care of me here?"
"Why would you say that, Ms. Watkins?" Sadie asked.
Jane seemed not to be talking about herself, "Anthony has a fiancée. But his ex-girlfriend, stayed at the Clark family, living in the same house as his pregnant fiancée. Isn't that unreasonable?"
"Coming to the Clark family wasn't your idea, was it?" Sadie didn't mean to belittle Jane.
Indeed, it wasn't Jane's idea. It was Ann's.
Sadie continued, "If we talk about propriety, it is Ms. Dewar who got pregnant before marriage should be blamed, moving into her fiancé's house without getting married or registered. That behavior is even more improper."
Hearing this, Jane finally sensed something was off.
Logically, Sadie was Ann's person, but what Sadie just said was completely contrary to Ann's stance.
Seeing Jane's thoughts, Sadie didn't hide it and smiled. "Ms. Watkins, you're smart. I may have been brought here by Mrs. Clark, but I side with reasonable people."
Jane thought Sadie was really impressive. Jane was just guessing that she was taking sides, while Sadie subtly criticized Ann for being unreasonable.
"I'm subordinate to Mr. Clark." Sadie clarified her stance because she knew Anthony had already explained things to Jane. With Jane's intelligence, she would soon figure it out.
"You..." Jane was a bit surprised but also felt it was reasonable, given that the future of the Clark family was in Anthony's hands. "Why are you telling me this? Aren't you afraid I'll tell Ann?"
"You’re not that kind of person," Sadie said fearlessly. "Ms. Watkins, I'm telling you this because I want you to trust Mr. Clark."
"Trust him with what?" Jane didn't expect Sadie to persuade her.
"Trust in your place in Mr. Clark's heart," Sadie said. "If you weren't so important to him, he wouldn't use me as a card, and I wouldn't dare risk telling you where I stand."
By revealing that she was Anthony’s person, Sadie was essentially cutting off her future and trust in Ann, handing her vulnerability over to Jane.
Jane felt a pang in her heart.
Jane looked away, focusing on a pattern on the carpet. After a while, she spoke, "Sadie, you've been in this circle for years. Do you still believe in love? Or do you believe that love is more important than family, revenge, responsibility, past, and future lives?"
"Ms. Watkins, you have a good relationship with Mrs. Windsor. The love between Mrs. Windsor and Mr. Windsor is a well-known story in our circle," Sadie added.
"I'm not Natalie, and Anthony is not Oliver," Jane said with a hint of melancholy. "Sadie, my relationship with Anthony started off wrong."
It was because of Jane's stubbornness and Anthony's painstaking efforts.
"Ms. Watkins, Mr. Clark cares about you a lot," Sadie continued to speak well of him. "I've watched Mr. Clark grow up. Besides you, I've never seen him look at any other woman twice."
"Is that so?" Jane responded disinterestedly. "Whether he looks or not doesn't matter. What matters is that he's another woman's fiancé and a soon-to-be father."
Sadie vaguely suspected that there was something off about the child Aurora was carrying, but it was just a suspicion. She hadn't received any confirmation from Anthony. Even if she had, she couldn't casually tell Jane.
Sadie sighed, seeing her persuasion was in vain.
After Jane finished applying the ointment and got dressed, she returned to the living room only to find out that Anthony had taken a call and left the Clark family.
Ann had also gone out, invited by a lady next door to go shopping for her future grandchild.
"Ms. Watkins, Ms. Dewar wants to see you." Jane had just arrived in the living room when someone came to call her.
The weather was nice today. Aurora was sitting in a wheelchair, being pushed by a maid to the rooftop garden to bask in the sun.
"Jane," Aurora called out to Jane with none of the previous politeness and all her negative emotions laid bare.
Sitting in the wheelchair, Aurora questioned, "Anthony is my fiancé, the father of my child! How could he do that last night?"
"What did he do?" Jane knew Aurora was referring to Anthony being in her room last night, but Jane was curious about what indecent act Aurora thought could have happened between her and Anthony.
