Chapter 476
"How's your leg?" Oliver asked, hesitant to move Natalie for fear of inadvertently worsening her injuries.
"It only hurt when I fell," Natalie replied. The pain had flared only at the moment the bone was dislocated; it would not hurt if left untouched.
After asking a few more questions and ensuring there were no other injuries, Oliver carefully lifted Natalie into the wheelchair, which had been righted.
The first-aid kit arrived before the family doctor.
Oliver gently covered the wound with a gauze pad, being cautious not to apply any ointment that might leave a scar on Natalie.
Only when the doctor arrived and examined Natalie's injuries, which, thankfully, were not deep, did they treat the wound with the appropriate medication and bandage it carefully. He then suggested they go to a nearby hospital for an X-ray of Natalie's leg to assess the condition of the bone.
Natalie nodded in agreement. She was composed and did not cry; she just sat there quietly. However, she looked rather pitiful.
Natalie's injury was quickly addressed, and during this time, no one dared to speak. Oliver's presence was so overwhelmingly gloomy that it felt suffocating.
Mr. Hastings sat close by, sighing repeatedly.
Helen could hardly believe the sight of her usually gentle and pliant daughter holding a knife!
Once Natalie was settled, Oliver's cold gaze turned to Susan.
"Oliver, it wasn't me! I did not hurt her! You have to believe me!" Susan burst into tears immediately, shaking her head repeatedly, looking both aggrieved and innocent.
Oliver looked at her expressionlessly with a frosty gaze.
"Grandpa, I really didn't do it!" Susan cried out to Mr. Hastings.
Mr. Hastings turned his head away, showing a clear unwillingness to even look at her.
"Mom, you believe me, right? Help me, I didn't lay a finger on her!" Susan turned to Helen.
"Dad..." Helen began, only to be silenced by Mr. Hastings's piercing glare. She was already walking on thin ice around her father-in-law and dared not step out of line in front of him, so she could only watch helplessly as Susan floundered.
Susan turned to her last hope, her voice desperate as she said, "Samuel, it wasn't me! I swear, I didn't do anything to her. She ran into me!"
Samuel's gaze on Susan was cold, tinged with visible weariness, as he said, "So Natalie lost her mind and ran into you? Come on, Susan, we all saw it. You were holding a knife, and there was blood on the knife!"
Susan's mind was in complete disarray.
'I'm innocent! Why doesn't anyone believe me?' she thought.
"Natalie, say something, please! It wasn't me. I didn't hurt you or push you. You fell all by yourself!" she said.
Susan moved toward Natalie, determined to resolve the matter.
"Stop right there, Susan!" Mr. Hastings's voice boomed.
Oliver instinctively positioned himself in front of Natalie to protect her while Jamie and Samuel quickly moved to block Susan's path. They were all protecting Natalie.
Helpless, Susan stood and looked at them with a mixture of disbelief and absurdity.
"Do you think I'd harm her in front of all of you? Do you think I'm crazy?" Susan retorted.
