Chapter 124 Will I Fall for Him?

Natalie was speechless.

“How can you tell just like that?”

Jane, with an air of nonchalance, replied, "Well, it’s not like I have no experience. There's hardly anything that escapes my notice..."

Jane suddenly trailed off, and the teasing expression on her face dimmed slightly. After a moment, she said, "Natalie, I've got to run now. Just call me if you need anything, alright?"

"Sure."

Natalie nodded, pretending she did not understand the reason behind Jane’s sudden change. She frowned as she watched Jane leave.

She recalled the man who had been glued to Jane’s side two years ago. That man was handsome, arrogant, and wild but was still elegant. She remembered his name was Anthony. She knew he had been Jane’s bodyguard. However, she had never heard of a bodyguard like him who would go so far as to stop others from sending love letters to the person they were protecting.

Jane paused for a moment and looked up at the building, unable to help but sigh.

‘If Hailey knew her ex-fiancé was so good-looking, she’d probably go crazy. However, good looks are deceptive and useless. Look at Anthony…’

Jane got into the car, still lost in her thoughts.

The Bentley had just passed the final gate of Rosewood Estate when Clint, sporting short hair and dressed in understated basic attire, exited the vehicle. He stood outside; his gaze fixed in the direction of the estate's gate.

In that moment, a crack appeared in the rear window of the Knight XV, emitting a trail of smoke from within. Someone was smoking inside.

As Anthony's right-hand man, Clint was known for his exceptional skills. It was almost as if he had a sixth sense; the moment Jane glanced in his direction, his eyes met hers. Through the Bentley's windshield, he saw Jane in the backseat, and he waved, hoping to catch her attention.

"Miss Jane, is that your friend?" the driver asked respectfully. If they were acquainted, he thought, perhaps he should stop the car so Jane could have a moment with her friend.

"I don’t know him, keep driving," Jane replied politely.

The driver looked at Clint as though Clint was crazy and continued to drive the Bentley away without any hesitation.

Clint stood silently for a brief two seconds before saying through the crack in the window, "Anthony, it seems like Jane did not see us. The car is gone."

Inside the Knight XV, the person inside sneered.

‘She didn’t see us? More like she pretended she didn’t see us…’

"Catch up to them," the man ordered. His voice was low and magnetic.

Jane, sensing trouble, kept her eyes on the rearview mirror. As she had feared, the Knight XV soon began to follow them. She said to the driver, “Please drop me off at the next intersection. My friend will pick me up shortly."

The driver hesitated, his concern evident. He guessed that Jane's sudden change of plans had something to do with the imposing vehicle tailing them. He said, "Well, if your friend doesn’t come, please give me a call."

"Thank you," Jane said.

The Bentley took a turn, and the Knight XV quickly arrived, pulling to a stop.

Clint exited the vehicle and hurried over with his long strides. He asked, "Jane, didn't you see me earlier? Isn't this car your favorite type? Why didn't you notice it? It's cool, right? Do you like it?"

Jane's gaze briefly flickered to the back seat, where the one-way glass revealed nothing but darkness. However, she knew who sat on the other side. It was someone she never wished to see again. His presence at this moment, she imagined, was like that of a predator eyeing its prey.

"I do like it. Who wouldn't admire this multi-million-dollar off-road vehicle known as the 'super beast'!" Jane replied with a smile devoid of warmth, “Alas, I’m so poor now that I can’t even afford one of its tires.”

Even Clint, often oblivious to subtext, sensed the irony in her words. He felt a wave of awkwardness wash over him. After all, Jane, once affluent, had experienced a dramatic fall from grace, largely due to the person now sitting in the Knight XV. Moreover, he was also, in a way, complicit in Jane’s downfall.

Clint pretended he did not understand Jane’s underlying meaning and said, "I thought you were just lost in thought and didn’t see the car."

Jane was upset. She could have enjoyed a comfortable ride home in the Bentley. Instead, she found herself standing here, a victim of circumstances brought about by the very man inside the Knight XV. She smiled mockingly and said, "I was just thinking that if I had not been deceived by your boss's handsome face in my youth, perhaps I wouldn’t have brought such a disaster to my family."

‘Ok, she’s in a terrible mood. She’s only so sharp with her words when she’s in a terrible mood…’

Clint braced himself and said with a smile, trying to lighten the mood, “Anthony is not just a pretty face. How could he have caught your eye otherwise?”

"What if he had small eyes and a flat nose? Would I still be interested, even if he had extraordinary abilities?" Jane retorted sharply.

When it came to words, Clint had never gained the upper hand with Jane.

Before Clint could respond, the rear window of the Knight XV finally lowered, revealing the person inside.

Bathed in the warm autumn sunlight, the man's features were cast in a faint shadow. His face; with sharp features, deep-set eyes, a high nose bridge, and plump lips, made him look cold and emotionless. Only the slightly upturned corners of his eyes betrayed his arrogance and untamed nature. However, compared to two years ago, he had grown more unpredictable, more powerful, and more handsome.

This man’s presence served as a stark reminder to Jane of her past naivety.

"Sir, I apologize for what I said earlier." Jane put on what she believed to be an impeccable smile, brushing off the malicious words she had just spoken.

Anthony watched her calmly, his chiseled face devoid of any emotion.

Anthony’s coldness was different from that of Oliver, which was a mix of cruelty and indifference, more of an air of nobility and superiority.

Anthony's coldness seemed to radiate from the depths of his soul. To describe it accurately was challenging. He was like a man who had wandered in the darkness for countless years, exuding a chilly and desolate aura from his very essence. Yet, amidst this bleakness, there existed a faint light around him. It was neither powerful nor overwhelming, but it possessed an intense, unwavering quality. It seemed to be his faith.

And Jane, for her part, had never understood what sustained this ’light’ within Anthony.

"Get in the car," Anthony finally said, breaking the silence as he saw Jane preparing to leave.

Jane, however, turned her back to him. She paused her steps for a brief moment, as if contemplating something, then continued walking, seemingly oblivious to his words.

"Jane, it’s difficult to hail a cab here. Why don’t we give you a ride?" Clint chimed in, trying to stop her from leaving. A hint of pleading could be seen in his eyes.

Anthony had always been silently protecting Jane, watching over her from a distance. Now that he had stepped out of the shadows and come to Jane, Clint could not bear the thought of her simply walking away.

Upon hearing Clint's words, the smile on Jane’s face vanished immediately, revealing the turmoil beneath her composed exterior.
