Chapter 339 Natalie, Stay With Me
"Oliver, think about it. How many times have we argued because of Susan? I’ve never liked letting petty emotions dictate my actions, and yet, here I am, getting angry frequently because of my husband’s involvement with another woman. You’ve assured me that your relationship is platonic, and I want to trust you, I should trust you… But, I… I feel like I’m becoming someone that I dislike…”
As Natalie expressed her feelings, a sense of powerlessness overwhelmed her. She found it difficult to accept Oliver’s involvement with Susan. Even if he was innocent, what about Susan’s feelings for him?
She felt powerless against the darkness that seemed to grow in her. If Oliver and Susan were truly innocent, then she would really become the kind of person she despised, jealous, petty, and foolish.
“You’re not that kind of person, Natalie,” Oliver said, tenderly kissing Natalie's lips to comfort her, “You’re kind, and you’ve always been so. It’s me. I’m sorry…”
Natalie's eyes widened in surprise. "You?"
"I’m sorry. I am at fault here. I’m really sorry,” Oliver said softly as he kissed her again, this time with a sense of guilt, “I’m sorry I failed to protect you.”
Natalie listened to the words he had stubbornly refused to say before, and her eyes welled up with tears.
"What’s wrong?" Oliver asked, his concern palpable as he cradled her face, gently kissing the tears away. "Don’t cry. Are you in pain?"
"Do you know how much I wished that the person who came to my rescue today was you, not Roger? I really hate you! You abandoned me for Susan! At that time, I really felt that I didn’t want to have anything to do with you anymore. What’s the point?”
Natalie let out all the frustrations and grievances she had held back throughout the day, crying and hitting Oliver.
Oliver held her close, allowing her to express her feelings. While her hits did not physically pain him, his heart ached deeply. He felt utterly worthless.
"Natalie, you can’t leave me. I won’t allow it. Stay with me."
…
Outside of the office.
“It’s been a while,” Susan said.
Lilian, previously considering Susan a friend, avoided making eye contact.
"Emily, I didn’t expect to see you here. My brother mentioned you previously,” Susan said, acting familiar with Emily.
“I prefer not to talk about your brother. You should know why,” Emily said with a polite smile, but her voice was devoid of any warmth.
"I’m sorry, Emily," Susan said, acknowledging the rift between Emily and Joseph due to past events.
Susan then turned to Lilian, her expression uneasy as she asked, “Do you also think it’s my fault? Do you think I was wrong? I was injured at the fashion show…”
"I’m not in a position to judge whether you were right or wrong," Lilian cut her off, saying, "But shouldn't you contact your family if something happened? If you’re injured, go and see a doctor? Why did you look for someone else’s husband?”
Susan explained earnestly, moving closer and reaching for Lilian's hand, "I was struck by a shelf at the fashion show. In this city, Oliver is the person I trust the most. It's natural to seek help from the person you trust most."
Lilian pulled her hand back, placing it behind her back. She had already made up her mind earlier to stand on Natalie’s side. Despite her previous friendship with Susan, her loyalty was with Natalie now. She asked again, “Why are you here in this city when your hometown is Tycoon City?”
Susan began, "I came to Paykston to organize a fashion show, not for leisure..."
She paused. Realizing Lilian's unwavering support for Natalie, she stopped explaining herself. Instead, she softened her voice and said, “I’m sorry. My actions had led to misunderstandings and inconveniences for everyone.”
It was clear that Emily, Lilian, Sophia, and Roger were firmly in Natalie's corner.
Emily, arms crossed, looked on with a hint of scorn.
Susan Hastings of the Hastings family had always portrayed herself as gentle, polite, and harmless. However, only she herself knew what her true nature was.
Emily would never forget why Samuel misunderstood that she and Joseph were having an affair, which resulted in Samuel taking ruthless measures to isolate Joseph. Later on, she had to go on a one-year hiatus and sever ties with Joseph. She did not dare to remain friends with Joseph, worried that it would bring him trouble.
In that incident, apart from Emily and Susan, no one knew the true extent of Susan's involvement. When Emily was engaged to Samuel, she did not guard against Susan, never expecting Susan to betray her.
At that time, Susan still pretended to be innocent and righteous as she said, “Emily, I only shared the truth with my brother. I didn’t lie or exaggerate the truth.”
Initially baffled by Susan's betrayal, Emily eventually came to a realization. Perhaps at that time, Susan thought she could use her connection with her brother to her advantage.
Objectively, Susan seemed to desire being the center of everyone's universe. Those who defied her were swiftly added to her list of enemies.
…
Over an hour later, Natalie and Oliver stepped out of the office.
Natalie's eyes were still red. Clearly, she had just cried.
"Natalie..." Lilian bit her lip, at a loss for words. She expressed her support by glaring at her cousin instead.
‘Not only is he useless, but he’s also a scumbag! How can he make his wife cry?’
Although less intense, the tension between Oliver and Natalie was still there. Oliver kept staring at her, but she only ignored him.
Emily watched and scoffed inwardly, thinking he had only himself to blame.
Roger, casually leaning against the wall, wore an unreadable expression on his face.
Natalie approached Roger as Oliver trailed behind her like a shadow, frowning.
"Roger, can I talk to you?” Natalie asked.
