Chapter 1086 The Watkins family's daughter is not worthy!
"Mom, why does she have to come down and talk to you? What right do you have to demand that?" Anthony retorted.
"Are you seriously talking to me like this?" Ann couldn't believe it. "I'm your mother; I should have every right to."
"Like you said, you're my mother, not hers," Anthony replied, hands in his pockets, his expression cold. "Mom, you don’t think that a month of soup can make up for the harsh words you said to Jane, do you?"
"What harsh words did I say?" Ann, although feeling guilty, didn't want to admit it.
"You said you wanted Jane to have an abortion; you didn’t accept the baby in her stomach," Anthony reminded her mercilessly.
Ann stammered. "I was just speaking out of anger, I admit I was wrong."
Recently, Ann had seen Aurora's son and really wanted one grandchild herself. Among the ladies in her circle, most of them had grandchildren, but her son wasn’t even married yet. How could she not be anxious?
She had been bringing soup to Jane every day for a while now and had come to terms with it. She didn’t like Jane, but that didn’t matter. The child was still a Clark, her grandchild!
How could a grandchild not recognize their grandmother?
Once she figured it out, her desire for a grandchild grew stronger, and she began to genuinely look forward to the little fetus.
"You hurt Jane with your angry words. You know you were wrong, but you didn’t apologize," Anthony said. "Mom, being an elder doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want. Jane’s pride is no less than anyone else's."
"Apologize? You mean I should apologize to Jane?" Ann asked incredulously.
Anthony’s silence was his answer. That was exactly what he meant.
"Impossible, never in this lifetime!" Ann shouted angrily.
She would never apologize to Jane!
The Watkins family’s daughter didn’t deserve it!
Having said all that needed to be said, Anthony had no intention of continuing the conversation and signaled Sadie to take Ann home.
Ann watched Anthony leave without looking back, almost choking with anger.
"Look at him! He wasn’t like this before. Ever since Jane came along, he hasn’t shown me any respect. I’m his mother!" Ann cried, as if she had suffered a great injustice.
Sadie sighed and tried to comfort her. "Mrs. Clark, you came here to make peace. To make peace, you need to control your temper."
Ann replied, "How much more do I need to control my temper? Haven’t I been good enough to them? I dislike the Watkins family so much, but I didn’t force Anthony to send Jane away. I sent soup for a month straight!"
Ann had never humbled herself like this in her entire life!
Sadie discreetly rolled her eyes, thinking, 'You think you’ve been good to them, but that’s just your opinion. Sending soup for a month? That's a credit to the kitchen staff, and you don’t even know what kind of soup was sent each day.'
Sadie said, "Mrs. Clark, take my advice. If you want to mend your relationship with Mr. Clark, you can’t avoid Ms. Watkins. Besides, you want a grandchild, don’t you?"
These words hit Ann right in the heart.
In the car.
"Drive," Anthony instructed the driver.
Jane glanced outside, clearly noticing Ann’s poor complexion, looking very upset.
"What did you say to her?" Jane asked. "Your mother seems really angry."
Anthony responded with a simple "Hmm," as if to say, yes, she’s angry, so what?
There was no "so what," and Jane decided to drop the topic.
During this check-up, Jane’s belly had a noticeable bump, though not very pronounced.
"The baby is doing fine," the doctor said with a smile after the examination. "At this stage, we can already determine the baby’s gender."
The doctor was clearly hinting that if Jane and Anthony wanted to know the baby’s gender, she could tell them discreetly.
Although the hospital prohibited doctors from revealing the baby’s gender to the parents, such "accidental" disclosures were not uncommon. Moreover, most clients at this high-end private hospital were wealthy and influential. Even if they cared about the gender, and didn't get the gender right the first time, they could just have another child.
Knowing the baby’s gender in advance was just to better prepare baby supplies and the nursery.
Jane looked at Anthony.
As agreed, Anthony would take responsibility for the child after birth, so the decision about the gender should be his.
"Do you want a boy or a girl?" Anthony asked, naturally fixing Jane’s hair.
Jane had just gotten off the examination bed and realized her hair was a bit messy. She brushed it a few times and looked into Anthony’s eyes, answering, "Neither."
Having a child was never what she wanted from the start.
Anthony’s eyes darkened for a moment, as if he didn’t understand the underlying meaning of Jane’s words, and he told the doctor, "No need to check."
Whether it was a boy or a girl didn’t matter. What mattered was that it was Jane’s and his child.
"Alright," the doctor quickly moved on and reminded Jane and Anthony about the precautions for the rest of the pregnancy.
The doctor suddenly changed the subject, "Now that you’re in the second trimester, if you two have the need, you can have intercourse, but you need to be careful."
Anthony paid extra attention to everything related to Jane, but when the doctor mentioned intercourse, he had to admit his heart skipped a beat.
That was just a man’s nature.
Just as the doctor was getting to the crucial point, Jane interrupted with a blank expression, "No need. So there’s nothing to be careful about."
The doctor was stunned for a couple of seconds by Jane’s reaction and looked at Anthony, as if asking if he needed to continue.
"Do you have the need?" Jane glared at Anthony. Although she phrased it as a question, the underlying message was clear: if you dare say you have the need, you’re done for!
Anthony remembered that Jane’s pregnancy was due to his moment of recklessness and felt guilty. "Thank you, doctor. We’ll be leaving now."
He helped Jane put on her coat and wrapped his arm around her waist as they left.
No, he wanted to. He really wanted to.
What man wouldn’t?
But the difference was, he would only think about it, not act on it.
He was terrified that Jane might have complications because of the pregnancy, terrified that she might suffer even a little because of it. How could he possibly risk hurting her for his own momentary pleasure?
Though his rational mind was clear, his emotions were harder to control.
Even after getting into the car, Anthony’s mind was still echoing with the doctor’s words.
