Chapter 471
Mr. Hastings, who had seasoned many storms in life, maintained his equanimity, nodding in acknowledgment. His eyes drifted to Natalie, who was seated in a wheelchair, and he looked as though he was hesitating to say something.
As he concluded his remark, his attention abruptly shifted to Natalie, who was seated in a wheelchair, rendering him speechless.
Displeased by Mr. Hastings’ attention on Natalie, Oliver said, “Mr. Hastings, this isn’t your first meeting with my wife.”
Indeed, Mr. Hastings had previously met Natalie before. However, during their last meeting, Natalie wore makeup, and he also did not pay attention to her. Not only that, but her demeanor seemed to have changed drastically as well.
Standing behind, Helen clenched her fists tightly, fully aware of what was going through the old man's mind. He must have been reminded of his late wife when he saw Natalie!
“Dad, have you forgotten? Mrs. Windsor was the one who caused trouble for Susan. Susan had gotten injured while trying to save her, but she plotted with someone called Wine against Susan. Based on Oliver’s posture today, it seems like he’s intent on making things difficult for us because of his wife,” Helen said.
Mr. Hastings had always been deeply deeply protective of Susan and doted on Susan. The sight of Susan in tears previously almost broke his heart. His expression darkened when he heard Helen’s words.
“Is that so?” Natalie asked. She did not want to fight with Helen, but Helen was hell-bent on finding fault with her.
However, Helen had miscalculated. Natalie did not care if she was insulted or slandered, but she could not stand her friends being insulted. As such, Helen was caught off guard. After all, Natalie had remained mostly silent since she arrived.
Drawing attention, she continued to say, “Helen, didn’t you vow to make me suffer? Didn’t you brag about being the matriarch of the Hastings family and how easily it’d be for you to kill me? Why do you think my leg is like this?”
Mr. Hastings regarded Helen with a frosty and scrutinizing look. He had always been aware that his daughter-in-law was far from being a saint, but saintliness was not a prerequisite for becoming the matriarch of the Hastings family. However, she had always hidden her vicious side in front of him until now.
"Dad, she’s so young, but she’s already so good at slandering people! How vicious! No wonder Susan was bullied by her!” Helen lamented, “Dad, when Aunt Marjorie returns from overseas, you really ought to have a talk with her. Her granddaughter-in-law is too problematic.”
“You dare to slander my wife in front of me?” Oliver asked, “Do you think you’re in a position to judge my wife, especially since she’s a member of the Windsor family now?”
Helen's anger flared. "Oliver, no matter what, I’m your elder!”
"So what? I know you’re old, but just because you’re old, you think you hold some power over me?”
“Dad, it seems like only you can deal with this situation,” Helen said. She truly lacked the confidence to stand up to Oliver.
