Chapter 1157 Repaying a Favor
"Not at all," Jane replied.
Anthony glanced at the scenery and chuckled. "Or are you saying I've driven you to the point where only coming here can bring you peace?"
Jane realized how well Anthony understood her.
She rolled her eyes, refusing to admit it. "Peace of mind? No, that's not it."
Her eyes darted around, clearly feeling guilty.
Anthony didn't call her out. "That's fine," he said, his tone obviously dismissive.
"Shall we head back?" he asked, changing the subject.
Jane nodded and pointed to the SUV nearby. "I borrowed a car."
Her words meant she'd drive herself back.
Anthony glanced at the car, a mischievous glint in his eyes. 'I should've punctured the tires,' he thought.
"It's almost noon. How about we eat before heading back?" Anthony suggested.
Jane didn't really want to be alone with him, but she had just asked for a big favor, so it wouldn't be polite to refuse.
"Okay," she agreed, remembering a good lamb barbecue place nearby. "I'll treat you to lunch."
Anthony snorted. "Repaying a favor?"
He clearly thought one meal wasn't enough.
Jane stared at him for a few seconds, then thickened her skin and nodded. "Yes, it's part of it."
She realized she wasn't thick-skinned enough. The doctor Anthony brought and the helicopter he arranged were a great help, not to mention the usual preparations.
They each drove their own cars, with Jane leading the way to the lamb barbecue place.
The owner of the lamb shop was a local, quite wealthy. The lamb was freshly slaughtered and skinned from their own land.
The restaurant's facilities were basic, with wooden tables and chairs.
Jane, usually picky, didn't mind. She sat down and wiped the table with a couple of napkins, which quickly turned black with grease.
"Hello, half a lamb, please!" Jane called out.
Anthony noticed that the Jane at work was very different from the one he usually saw.
Everyone knew Jane had been pampered since childhood; she was the apple of Jovan's eye. She had the most discerning taste and particular living habits. But now, she could stay in a normal five-star hotel or eat at a small restaurant in the desert.
Jane's stubbornness kept her head high even when the Watkins family fell, allowing her to bounce back and disappoint anyone hoping she'd fail.
At noon, the lamb barbecue place wasn't crowded. The owner, who was also the chef, came out to greet them. "Any dietary restrictions? Are you from out of town? Do you eat spicy food? Do you want onions?"
"No restrictions, we eat spicy," Jane said with a smile. "Very spicy."
Anthony gave her a helpless look. "Medium spicy is fine."
The owner chuckled. "You couple should decide together. How spicy do you want it?"
The word "couple" made Jane and Anthony exchange a glance. Jane felt a bit embarrassed and looked away first.
"I'm paying, and he's not my boyfriend, so my money, my rules," Jane said.
The owner gave Anthony a curious look and said to Jane, "Alright." He asked a few more questions before heading to the kitchen to prepare the lamb.
Jane, wanting to distract herself from the owner's teasing, contacted her studio to see if anyone had dietary restrictions and she could bring some lamb back for them.
When Jane looked up, she saw Anthony heading towards the restroom, soon disappearing from sight.
The kitchen and restroom were in the same direction.
At the kitchen door, Anthony saw the owner placing the marinated lamb on the grill.
"Excuse me, please make it less spicy," Anthony said from outside the kitchen.
The owner, while brushing oil on the lamb, laughed. "You like that girl, don't you? Haven't won her over yet? I could tell from the way you looked at her."
"Yes." Anthony nodded. "Less spicy, please?"
"I can do that, but you're not paying, and you're not her boyfriend. Why should I listen to you?" the owner teased.
Anthony rarely encountered such people, but the owner meant no harm, so he couldn't get angry.
Anthony took out his wallet and slapped a few bills on the table. "Here's a tip, please do me a favor."
Seeing the money, the owner was a bit displeased. "Hmph! I don't need the money! I won't take it for nothing!"
Anthony looked at him expressionlessly, feeling a bit troubled.
Anthony would rather deal with unscrupulous people because they were usually greedy, and he had plenty of money. But dealing with straightforward and idle middle-aged men like this, he had no idea what they wanted because they might just be looking to have some fun.
