Chapter 1054 Grievance

Anthony's pupils flashed with a knowing light. "Did Ainslee look for Jovan Watkins after waking up?"

"No..." Clint's eyes lit up. "I get it!"

Ainslee and Jovan had a close relationship. During the period when Ainslee was publicly declared to be "severely injured and unconscious," Jovan did not show up. Everyone thought Jovan was either dead or barely alive. However, after Ainslee woke up, she didn't actively inquire about Jovan, which was unusual.

Ainslee didn't need to ask because she knew Jovan was safe.

When Jane came downstairs after choosing a room, Clint had already left. Only Anthony was in the living room, instructing the servants on what to pay attention to in the coming days.

"Are you satisfied?" Anthony asked Jane as he signaled the servants to leave.

"I chose the first room on the right," Jane replied, not answering Anthony's question.

Anthony recalled the layout of the rooms in his mind. On the right side, there was only one bedroom and one study. The other two bedrooms and a walk-in closet were on the left.

Jane had deliberately chosen a room far from Anthony.

Anthony sat on the sofa, arms crossed, and stared at Jane for a few seconds before suddenly laughing. "Jane Watkins, do you think choosing a room in a separate location will help?"

Anthony's words were somewhat cryptic. To someone else, the phrase "will help" would be completely incomprehensible.

But Jane knew Anthony was asking if avoiding him would be of any use.

If Anthony wanted to find Jane, no hallway, wall, or door could stop him.

"That depends on whether you have any shame, Mr. Clark," Jane replied in the same tone.

Anthony was amused by Jane but couldn't get angry. He finally said, "I have no shame."

'Shame? What for? In front of Jane, shame is the least useful thing,' he thought.

The servants standing in the corner exchanged glances. Was Jane always this provocative when talking to Anthony in private?

Billy's sponge cake was ready.

"Billy, take a break and chat with Jane. I have some work to do," Anthony said, having put off work for the past few days and needing to go upstairs to handle it.

"Okay!" Billy responded happily, but noticed that Jane didn't even spare Anthony a glance.

Jane stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, basking in the sun and eating sponge cake, with Billy sitting beside her.

After Anthony went upstairs, Billy asked quietly, "Ms. Watkins, are you and Mr. Clark having a disagreement?"

"Billy, your baking is as good as ever. This cake is delicious," Jane said, taking a bite of the osmanthus cake, her taste buds fully satisfied, as if she hadn't heard Billy's question.

"Ms. Watkins!" Billy knew Jane had heard him.

Jane swallowed the cake in her mouth and stopped eating. She looked at Billy with a hint of barely noticeable grievance.

"What's wrong, Ms. Watkins? Did Mr. Clark bully you?" Billy, whose wife had passed away without leaving any children, had watched Jane grow up. In his heart, Jane was both his employer and his daughter.

Jane lowered her head, pouting unconsciously. Of course, he had bullied her.

He had made Jane unexpectedly pregnant. Although she was partly responsible for being reckless after drinking, it was Anthony's fault for not using protection.

And to prevent Jane from having an abortion, he had planned to use Jovan's situation to threaten her.

Jane had waited so long for Jovan to be safely discharged from the hospital, to finally reunite with her brother. Now, Jovan might be in trouble again, and she could only rely on Anthony for information. The more she thought about it, the more aggrieved she felt.

"Here, Ms. Watkins, have some juice," Billy said, offering her a glass of freshly squeezed juice.

Jane glanced at it disinterestedly. "I want milk tea."

Billy chuckled. "Ms. Watkins, no matter how old you get, you still love milk tea. I don't know how to make it."

Since Billy couldn't make milk tea, Jane reluctantly picked up the juice and took a sip.

"What did Mr. Clark do to upset you this time?" Billy asked, waiting for a couple of seconds. Seeing that Jane had no intention of speaking, he started talking to himself. "I think you're just throwing a tantrum."

"Why?" Jane immediately looked up to refute. "That's not true."

Billy chuckled. "That's just what I think. Mr. Clark has always indulged and pampered you. He can't bear to see you upset, so how could he bully you?"

Jane disagreed and sneered. "He used to scold me all the time."

"That's because you were mischievous. I remember that even as a high school student, you wouldn't eat properly, just snacking on chips and milk tea. How could he not scold you? Mr. Clark forbidding you from eating those things was for your own good. When you got into fights, no matter how big the mess, he would clean it up for you, so you wouldn't have to worry. When you were sick in your sophomore year, he took care of you personally. You were so spoiled that you even had him feed you."

Jane blinked.

The long-buried memories gradually became clearer with Billy's words.

Jane felt a pang of sadness and pain in her heart. "So what? He almost got my brother killed."

What Jane cared about was never that Anthony had brought down the Watkins family, but that Jovan had almost died in that family upheaval. And when she had humbled herself to beg Anthony for help, he hadn't even granted her a meeting. Since he had decided not to see her back then, why was he looking out for her now?

"Ms. Watkins, have you ever considered that there might have been a misunderstanding back then?" Billy said patiently.

Jane looked at Billy with a blank expression. "Billy, have you been bribed by Anthony to come here and speak well of him?"

Billy half-jokingly laughed. "I do get paid by Mr. Clark now."

He continued, "I'm just kidding. He has been supporting me all these years for your sake. When he was with the Watkins family, he actually had a good relationship with Mr. Watkins. Otherwise, Mr. Watkins wouldn't have trusted him to take care of you. After Mr. Watkins had his accident, you sent him abroad for treatment. All the procedures and finding the medical team went so smoothly. Didn't Mr. Clark support you behind the scenes?"

Jane did have many friends, but the situation was chaotic back then. Many families didn't react in time. The few who could help were her peers who were close to her. The older generation, who held power, were more focused on their interests and didn't want to offend the ruthless Anthony for the sake of a ruined Watkins family.

In short, Jane had been isolated and helpless back then.

Jane had considered that Anthony might have played a role in ensuring Jovan received the best medical care in the world, but she subconsciously rejected this idea.

Because Jane resented Anthony for hurting Jovan.

Because Jane resented Anthony for ignoring her desperate pleas during that thunderstorm. Admitting Anthony's goodwill back then would mean admitting that her years of resentment were a joke, and she wouldn't even know who to hold accountable.
