Chapter 765 Married to Jane
"Mr. Clark," Clint usually wasn't one to comfort others, but at this moment, he regretted not learning how to console people. Otherwise, he wouldn't be so speechless.
Anthony was still wearing the same T-shirt when he saw Jane. He stared coldly at the crowd with his gaze fixed on Jane the whole time. Clint knew that when Anthony saw Jane being harassed by the guests and Ann, he wanted to go over there, but they soon saw Richard.
"Does Mr. Foster know we're here?" Clint was perceptive. Even though he stood one step behind Anthony, he still felt Richard's gaze.
Anthony nodded and said, "Yes, he saw us."
Richard was purposely looking at Anthony. He was provoking Anthony. After all, he was the fiancé Jovan chose for Jane.
"Mr. Clark, don't you want to explain to Ms. Watkins that this engagement was never your idea?" Clint was usually quiet, but he couldn't help to speak up. He knew there were many misunderstandings between Anthony and Jane. But if Anthony could explain the situation to her, Clint believed they could finally move on.
"Explanation without action is useless," Anthony retorted. He was convinced his arranged marriage would fall apart if he didn’t appear in the engagement banquet. The failure of this engagement would be more effective than explaining. In addition, Anthony couldn't tell Jane he didn't want to get engaged because she had been avoiding him. He felt that explaining the situation would damage his dignity in front of her.
"Mr. Clark, Moalia's intelligence personnel said Jovan's condition has worsened!" Clint looked at a message and instantly became nervous.
"But he had just got out of the ICU when we left." Anthony frowned slightly, sensing something wasn’t right. He went to Moalia because he received news of Jovan's critical condition. Anthony didn't expect that once he returned home, he would be involved in an engagement with someone he didn’t like, nor did he expect Jovan’s condition to worsen so soon.
"Tell our people in Moalia to keep an eye on Jovan, we're going back immediately!" Anthony turned around and swiftly dodged the servants, leaving the mansion.
"Mr. Clark, are you worried that Jovan is playing a trick?" Clint quickly guessed, "He shouldn't be. He has been lying in bed for five years, and he just came out of the ICU."
"Jovan is not a normal person, and we can't measure him by normal standards." Anthony took one last look at his mansion before getting into the car.
The situation was urgent, and Anthony didn't have time to take a few more glances at Jane. Meanwhile, Clint couldn’t catch Anthony's thoughts. Jovan almost died several times in Moalia, and it was Anthony who had brought in the best doctors to treat him and save his life. But when Jovan showed signs of improvement, Anthony treated him like a criminal and was eager to return to Moalia. Clint just couldn't understand. He thought, 'Perhaps Mr. Clark is worried that Jovan is in critical condition again? Maybe his previous improvement was only temporary.'
Even though Jane had nothing interesting to talk about with Richard and had no interest in conversing with him, she decided to stay and thank Richard since he had helped her. Besides, Richard called her as his companion. She couldn't leave him alone.
Jane and Natalie exchanged glances through the crowd. Jane sent a text message to her, asking her not to worry about her. She had everything under control.
"Do you remember me?" Richard asked Jane with a slight smile and lowered gaze. He had seen Jane secretly many times, but she had only seen him a few times, around five or six years ago. Richard thought Jane might have forgotten about him.
"How could I?" Jane waved her hand. "You're as unforgettable as my high school teacher."
"So, on that note, I'm even more detestable than your high school teacher?" Richard asked.
Jane awkwardly scratched her earlobe, feeling he understood her very well. "Mr. Foster, I was just talking nonsense," she didn't feel embarrassed for too long. She quickly calmed down and brought up the topic she wanted to discuss. "But you were just talking nonsense too just now, right?"
"What nonsense did I spit out?" Richard didn't ask on purpose. His mind was too calm and empty to engage in a conversation. He looked at Jane and noticed that, besides becoming more mature and beautiful, her inner strength had grown stronger. Her appearance appeared to haven’t changed as well. She was fearless, composed, noble, and kind, just how Jovan wanted her to be.
But Richard also knew that Jane couldn't be as relaxed as she appeared. Especially after experiencing her family's decline, the loss of status, and being deceived and abandoned by her young lover. She was still the girl who liked to bear the pain alone.
"Mr. Foster, we both know I’m not your companion, so when you said you had the opportunity to reunite with me and gave the impression that you liked me, you were just getting me out of trouble, weren’t you?" Jane asked with a smile, "So, let me thank you. It was indeed foolish of me to love Anthony so much back then. I was naive." Jane pretended to say it seriously. If she wanted to chat with someone, she would take the initiative. This was also a quality that a socialite should possess.
"Wrong impression?" Richard asked back, "Ms. Watkins, maybe you’re the one who misunderstood."
Jane raised her eyebrows and remained silent for several seconds, repeatedly confirming if she understood Richard's words correctly. "You..." she couldn't find the words to respond.
"I did intend to marry you," Richard said, "I had this plan back then, and I still do now."
Jane immediately choked in shock, and Richard found her reaction incredibly adorable. He couldn't help but burst out laughing while looking at her. Meanwhile, Jane became even more speechless.
"I wasn't babbling nonsense," Richard said.
"You..."
"I wasn't joking either," Richard's smile grew even brighter. "Teachers don't joke much."
Jane covered her face. She regretted comparing Richard to being as annoying as her teachers. She wondered if Richard would repeatedly use this to tease her.
"Mr. Foster, do you want to marry me because of my brother?" Jane finally came up with a question for why Richard would say and do such things. "I know you and Jovan are good friends, but I'm doing fine now. You don't need to sacrifice your happiness to look after me." Jane couldn’t bear to see people sacrificing their happiness for her.
"Ms. Watkins, you should have more confidence in yourself."
"No!" Jane felt that Richard didn’t understand her condition. "Mr. Foster, you need to understand. I no longer have a prestigious status and am no longer a socialite. Aside from this face, I have nothing!" but after Jane said she had nothing but looks, she began to think it sounded more like she was flirting with Richard.
Seeing a waiter passing by not far away, Richard raised his hand to signal him. When the waiter approached, he took a glass of white wine and sniffed it. Then, he handed the wine to Jane and said, "This should be Dr. Loosen's white wine." Dr. Loosen, or Xavier Loosen, was a world-renowned winemaker and one of Jane's favorites.
