Chapter 967: Can't Let Go
"What are you doing?" Although Anthony was looking down at his phone, he was sharp enough to notice Jane's movements immediately.
Lying on the hospital bed, Jane pretended to reach casually for the water cup on the bedside table.
Caught by Anthony, Jane pouted and said, "I'm thirsty. I want some water."
"Just wait for twenty more minutes." Anthony glanced at the time.
Jane found it hard to speak, wearing a terrible expression. She looked at Anthony for two seconds, realizing his refusal was firmer than her desire for water. She licked her lips and quickly reached for the cup.
Who would have thought that Anthony, as if predicting her move, intercepted the cup in a flash?
Anthony placed the cup far away. "Jane, are you a naughty child? When you're sick, you need to follow the doctor's orders. Don't you get that?"
"Nope." Jane turned her head away, not wanting to look at him. ‘Who are you to boss me around?’ she thought.
Anthony knew Jane's temper worsened when she was sick, and she would act childishly. Instead of getting upset, he felt a bit nostalgic. She no longer feared sleeping alone in a dark room, but her spoiled side when sick hadn't changed.
"Be good. Wait until the time is up." Anthony tried to pat Jane's head, but she dodged disdainfully.
Just as Jane was about to refuse his touch, there was a knock on the door.
Anthony said, "Come in." It wasn't a doctor or nurse but a servant from the Clark family, followed by Ann.
"Ann," Anthony softened his rare gentle gaze slightly.
Ann's gaze immediately fell on Anthony's hand, which was still near Jane. ‘Is he about to hug her or something? Am I interrupting them?’ Ann thought.
"Anthony, come with me to see Aurora right now." Ann didn't want to discuss Jane's place in Anthony's heart in front of her.
"I'm busy." Anthony withdrew his hand and glanced at Jane.
Jane widened her eyes, watching Anthony and Ann like a spectator. She hoped Anthony would leave quickly.
Anthony picked up the water cup and went to the bathroom, pouring out the water. Then he placed the empty cup on the table next to Jane's bed.
Jane was furious that Anthony was provoking her!
"What are you busy with? You should be busy seeing your fiancée and son, not this improper woman!" Ann angrily pointed at Jane.
Anthony instantly turned cold, and Ann could clearly feel his hostility.
"Right now, she is not an improper woman," Anthony retorted.
Ann felt a moment of panic. "How is she not improper? She knows you have a fiancée and a son, yet she still seduces you."
Jane wanted to retort but touched her throat and decided against it.
No matter what Ann said, Jane didn't want to argue with Ann, as her throat was uncomfortable and she had no advantage in this situation.
Jane pressed the call button on the bedside.
The nurse from the high-end private hospital arrived quickly. Entering the room, she glanced at the seemingly confrontational Anthony and Ann, then decided to ask the patient, "Ms. Watkins, what do you need?"
Jane cleared her throat and pointed at Anthony and Ann. "Please ask these two to leave. I don't get along with them, and they're disturbing my recovery."
The nurse thought, ‘Isn’t this handsome guy the one who brought you in yesterday? How are you not familiar now?’
"Ms. Watkins, it was this gentleman who brought you to the hospital yesterday as a family member."
"He's not my family," Jane said. "He's my ex-boyfriend. We have a grudge, and he has a fiancée. Please get them out of here!"
The situation seemed a bit complicated.
However, in a high-end private hospital, there were plenty of patients with complicated family and relationship issues. The doctors, nurses, and even the cleaning staff were used to it. They heard gossip but never asked questions, just listened quietly.
"Sir, madam..." Before the nurse could finish, Anthony glanced at the somewhat smug Jane sitting on the bed and walked out first.
Ann being here would affect her recovery.
The spoiled Jane had a history of being stubborn to refuse medicine when she was sick.
"Keep an eye on her. Give her water when the time is up," Anthony instructed the nurse. "Mix hot and cold water in a three-to-one ratio."
"Okay, sir. Don't worry," The nurse answered.
She thought, ‘Is this an ex-boyfriend? My boyfriend has chase me for three years and isn’t that considerate!’
Once Anthony and Ann left, the nurse returned to the room and saw the stunning patient holding the cup with her free hand, politely asking, "Hi, could you get me some hot water?"
‘Your ex-boyfriend really knows you well,’ the nurse pondered.
"Sorry, madam, you can't have anything to eat or drink right now," the nurse said. "That gentleman specifically asked me to watch you."
Jane's polite expression instantly fell. "He has no right to control me."
The nurse found Jane both beautiful and a bit cute. "But he's the one who signed as your family member and is paying your medical bills."
Jane closed her eyes tightly, glared at the cup, and cursed Anthony a hundred times in her mind.
Ann led Anthony forward but suddenly noticed he changed direction, showing no intention of walking with her.
"Aurora's room is this way," Ann reminded.
"I don't intend to see her," Anthony replied.
"Anthony!" Ann's voice was stern, drawing the attention of those around. She took a deep breath and led Anthony to a less crowded area. "Come with me!"
Anthony followed, stood still, and met Ann's gaze.
"Anthony, what do you want?" Ann stared intently at the Anthony she had watched grow up.
"Haven't you already figured it out?" Anthony didn't hide anything.
It was because she knew the truth that Ann was thrown off balance, no longer as confident in her suppression and ridicule of Jane.
Ann used to just want to make Jane suffer, to make her atone for the life of her unborn daughter.
But now, Ann finally saw clearly that her good son Anthony still cared about Jane!
"Anthony, haven't you already let her go? Didn't you not see her for those two years? Why do you suddenly change your mind now? Think about your father and sister! Anthony, you..." Ann asked.
"I never let her go." Anthony's words stopped Ann in her tracks.
Ann stared at Anthony as if she didn't recognize him.
"Ann, I tried, but I failed," Anthony said with a self-deprecating laugh. "Do you know why no one except you dared to mention Jane in front of me in those two years?"
“Because I couldn't let go and I didn't dare to mention her,” Anthony explained.
Ann couldn't believe it.
"Anthony, how can you do this? How can you face your dead father and unborn sister?" Ann's psychological defenses seemed to be completely broken by Anthony's words. She couldn't control her emotions.
"Isn't making the Watkins family disappear enough?" Anthony asked.
‘What’s wrong with Jane and Jovan? Nothing,’ he thought.
