Chapter 165 Distinguishing Who You Are
There was no response from the other end of the line for a time.
“Roger?” Natalie called out, puzzled.
“Alright, I’ll post a statement shortly,” Roger said in an uncharacteristically indifferent voice, which made Natalie feel unsettled.
Natalie recalled their first encounter at the hospital and noticed the contrast in Roger's attitude toward her. After a moment, she asked, “Can I ask you something?”
"Go ahead."
"Do I resemble someone from your past? Is that why you befriended me?"
Initially, she wanted to ask, ‘Is that why you've been so kind to me?’. However, she could sense that Roger’s attitude toward her exceeded what one would expect from a friend of just over a month. Moreover, he just did not seem like the friendly type.
"Yes, you do resemble someone," Roger admitted before he added, “However, I can discern that you are you.”
This meant that his desire to befriend her was genuine.
“That’s great.”
A smile spread across Natalie's face, and Roger heard her laughter, pure and melodious.
…
After the call ended, the people in the room watched as the gentle expression on Roger’s face disappeared along with his smile, returning to his usual indifference and ruthlessness.
All of them were curious. What kind of person could elicit such warmth from the usually merciless Roger?
Roger took a deep breath and turned his attention back to the document before him. After a moment, he took a sip of wine, pulled out his phone, and began to type. His reluctance could be felt with each word he typed.
…
Ten minutes later
Natalie came across Roger's latest Instagram post.
[I don’t know why, but my relationship with someone whom I consider a sister is being misunderstood.]
These words bore a humor that did not quite match Roger’s usual demeanor. Only he himself knew how bitter he felt.
Unsurprisingly, the netizens were stirred up again.
[You only treat Natalie like your sister?]
Roger hesitated to respond, but seeing Natalie's name, he patiently clarified.
[Yes. We’re not related by blood.]
The reply was the absolute limit of the patience Roger had for unrelated people.
[So Roger only treats Natalie like a sister. He has no connection to the Watson family?]
[I think Natalie is beautiful. As long as she’s not involved in a scandal, I’ll support her!]
[Why does it seem like Robert is deliberately distancing himself from the Watson family? Am I reading too much into this?]
[I feel like I've stumbled upon an extraordinary secret!]
Indeed, Roger was intentionally distancing himself from the Watson family. His kindness was only to Natalie, and he would not allow the Watson family to exploit him.
…
At the RK Group’s headquarters.
The boss had not left yet, and everyone in the company was working overtime, afraid to leave without permission. This situation had persisted for two days now.
Charles saw the latest development online and felt a spark of hope. It just so happened that he needed to visit Oliver's office to deliver some documents. He hoped this piece of news would improve Oliver's mood. If Oliver's mood improved, all the employees could look forward to better days.
Thump!
A loud sound startled Charles, causing him to abandon the words he had intended to say.
Oliver had thrown the marketing department's proposed plan onto the floor, and the neatly bound documents scattered about.
“How dare they submit such a thing to me! Even students can do better than them!”
Charles remained motionless, not daring to utter a word. However, he thought it was impossible for students to come up with this kind of plan. He looked at Oliver furtively, studying the latter’s expression.
Oliver was reading the documents in front of him again. In fact, some of these documents could have waited a few more days, but he was in a foul mood, so he deliberately distracted himself with work to keep his mind off Natalie.
Charles also knew this. After thinking for a moment, he decided it was best not to mention Natalie for now to avoid being scolded. However, after another moment, he thought he would ask for Jamie’s help.
…
After leaving the office, Charles texted Jamie, asking the latter to casually mention Natalie’s matter when delivering the meal to Oliver.
Jamie: Do you think I'm a fool?
Jamie knew that mentioning Natalie in the same sentence as Roger was pure folly!
In the end, Charles could only sigh in disappointment.
…
When Natalie prepared Oliver's meal, she took into account his injured hand.
As Jamie arrived to collect the food, Natalie contemplated asking about the severity and cause of Oliver's injury. However, she refrained, knowing that Jamie would inform Oliver about it. She did not want Oliver to mistake her concern for admitting her mistake, trying to make amends, and agreeing to cut ties with all men in the future.
…
The third round of Top Avenue competition was approaching. The final round would be televised live, featuring the traditional runway show, revealing the contestants' abilities on the runway.
Speaking of the runway, nearly everyone remembered Natalie's astounding performance in the previous round, her captivating attire, regal presence, and commanding strides.
If Natalie could replicate her previous performance, perhaps only Arwyn stood a chance to challenge her. Alas, Arwyn’s prior performances in the first two rounds were unimpressive. Her low score in the second round lowered her chances of competing greatly.
In the end, Hailey was the sole contestant who could compete with Natalie.
The outfits for the show were delivered a day prior to the round. Each participant received three outfits, showcasing the latest creations from several promising local designers. The styles varied, each possessing distinctive qualities of their own.
When Natalie received her attire, everyone was stunned.
Her outfit’s theme was ‘Vampire’. She was given three striking outfits. There was a short red dress, a unique red-and-black suit, and a white chiffon fishtail gown with red embroidery, which invited many people’s envy.
The back of the chiffon gown had a low V-cut, which would highlight one’s graceful bone structure. It was also accompanied by a light and ethereal veiled headpiece adorned with crimson blossoms. It resembled a wedding gown but in a bold red hue.
Hiding her envy and yearning for Natalie’s outfits, Hailey pretended to ask curiously, “How were the outfits assigned?"
There was no doubt that Natalie’s outfits were much more beautiful than theirs.
"The designer specifically asked for this set of outfits to be given to Natalie. As for the others, they were assigned by professional stylists based on your physique and character. If you find them unsatisfactory, you may make personal adjustments.”
