Chapter 1037 Confrontation
"Change them to flats," Anthony said to the sales assistant.
The sales assistant was momentarily stunned but quickly smiled and agreed. She brought over a more expensive pair of lambskin flats. "How about these, miss? These don't sell as well as the high heels, but that's mainly because flats are harder to pull off. However, for a woman with your grace, it's no problem at all!"
She was quite the flatterer.
Jane was wearing a pair of white sneakers today, which didn't look out of place with her black dress. But for a perfectionist like Jane, wearing casual shoes with an elegant black dress was an insult to her appearance!
These sales assistants had sharp eyes. They could usually tell a customer's size just by looking, without needing to ask.
Jane changed into the new shoes and was quite satisfied. She checked herself out in the mirror and then turned to ask Anthony, the one footing the bill, "How do I look? Will I embarrass you in this outfit?"
"Wrap it up," Anthony told the sales assistant.
Getting a sale worth tens of thousands of dollars in less than ten minutes made the sales assistant beam with joy.
"Wrap it up?" Jane looked at Anthony in confusion. She thought the whole point of buying this outfit was because her shirt and jeans had embarrassed him. So why wasn't she just wearing the outfit out?
"It's cold. We should buy a long-sleeved outfit," Anthony said.
The sales assistant, seeing her commission prospects rise, smiled even more brightly. "Miss, our spring collection is over here. You can take a look; they would suit you very well! Your husband is so good to you, even buying you flats. It's rare to see such a loving husband."
Jane suddenly wanted to take off the shoes.
Anthony suppressed a laugh and had no intention of correcting the misunderstanding.
"No need," Jane said, not wanting to buy anything else. But with the temperature only in the 60s, it would indeed be a bit chilly outside. Jane looked around the store. "Show me that shawl."
Ten minutes later, Jane walked out of the store with a shawl over her little black dress, looking stylish and warm.
Anthony received a text from Clint and told Jane, "I have to leave. You stay here and enjoy yourself. All expenses will be charged to my account."
Jane was puzzled. "You're leaving?"
"Yes, I have something to take care of."
"Then I'll go back too. It's not that fun here, and I need to drive you," she said.
"The bodyguard will take me." Anthony insisted on leaving Jane there. "There's going to be a guest coming to the estate. It'll be safer for you to stay here. A bodyguard will accompany you on your way back. If you don't feel like driving, just let him do it."
Resorts of this level had professional security companies to prevent intruders, which was one of the reasons Anthony chose this place.
Jane made an "OK" gesture and saw Anthony off.
The message Clint sent to Anthony read: [Landed in Fae City.]
This meant Clint and Ann had arrived at Fae City airport.
Ann had gone to great lengths to come here, and she wouldn't leave without seeing Anthony.
Anthony took a car driven by a bodyguard back to the estate. Less than half an hour later, Ann arrived with Clint.
"Mom," Anthony said calmly when he heard the door open and saw Ann standing outside.
Ann instantly understood that Anthony had prepared for her arrival. She had expected to catch him off guard!
Ann immediately looked at Clint. She had been watching him the whole way to prevent him from contacting Anthony, but she still failed!
Clint looked around, his face saying, "It's not my fault."
"You said your injury wasn't serious. Why are you still in a wheelchair?" Ann's attention was still more on Anthony's condition.
"Doctor's orders," Anthony explained briefly.
Seeing that Anthony didn't look haggard, was in good spirits, and hadn't lost weight, Ann reluctantly believed him.
"Where's Jane? Is she too scared to come out and see me?" Ann looked around but didn't see Jane.
Anthony moved his wheelchair to make way for Ann. "Come inside," he said.
Ann, as Anthony's mother, was supposed to go in first.
Clint went to push Anthony's wheelchair, leaning in to listen to Anthony's instructions.
In a voice only he and Clint could hear, Anthony said, "Go keep an eye on Jane."
Anthony still wasn't comfortable leaving Jane alone at the resort, even with other bodyguards there. Their combined presence couldn't match the reassurance Clint's presence provided.
Who knew if there would be people like Alexandra and Madeline causing trouble again?
Ann quickly scanned the estate but didn't see Jane.
However, there were snacks on the table, yogurt in the fridge, stuffed animals on the sofa, and fresh flowers on the table. It didn't look like a place where only a man lived.
"Stop looking. Jane isn't here," Anthony said, gesturing for Ann to take a sit on the sofa.
Ann was full of frustration. Seeing a bodyguard come in to serve her water and snacks, she asked Anthony, "Where's Clint?"
Clint had already gone to find Jane.
But Anthony didn't say, and Ann wouldn't think Anthony would specifically send Clint to Jane.
"Mom, you came all this way. Just say what you want to say," Anthony didn't want to waste time with Ann.
Ann looked around and sneered. "You're really generous, renting a $20,000-a-night estate for Jane."
Anthony didn't deny it.
Anthony didn't have high standards for accommodation. If it were just him, he would usually choose a hotel. If safety wasn't a concern, he could even accept a non-presidential suite.
But Jane was different.
Even this $20,000-a-night estate could be criticized by Jane. The best solution would be for Anthony to buy a villa, but time was tight, and he probably couldn't find one that met Jane's standards and tastes in a day.
"Jane Watkins isn't here, so she's lucky to escape this time," Ann snorted and turned to Anthony, commanding him as his mother. "Anthony, you must come back with me today."
"Mom, you haven't figured out the situation," Anthony said calmly, taking a sip of water.
"What?" She was a bit puzzled.
"I have grown up, and you can't control me anymore." Even to his biological mother, Anthony spoke without any mercy. His rare moments of gentleness were reserved for Jane.
"Mom, even if you threaten not to leave unless I go with you, I can still take Jane and leave, leaving you here alone," Anthony said. "As for Jane, do you really think you can gain any advantage over her? You could hurt her before because she had a weakness, she felt guilty towards you, and she thought the deceased child was innocent. But Mom, was Jane Watkins really at fault? When she realizes she doesn't owe you anything, you will have no power over her."
