Chapter 599 How Could You Not Love Her?
Sharon nearly choked with rage at the scene.
What was with these heiresses? Shouldn't the last raincoat be kept for oneself? If it had to be gifted for goodwill, shouldn't it go to Oliver? Why on earth was it given to Natalie?!
"Me, me, me!" Another chubby-faced heiress dashed back to her vehicle and soon returned with a small bag of goodies, "Here, these are my cookies and chocolate; Natalie, please take some if you're hungry. I didn't want to burden you, so I didn't bring much."
Natalie was taken aback, touched by the warm gesture: "Thank you."
"Do you need a power bank? Mine is super compact!" Yet another heiress, not even bothering with an umbrella, dashed back to her car to retrieve a power bank, "I remembered your phone model; it should fit this cable."
She then handed both the power bank and the cable to Natalie.
"My umbrella is super light and wind-resistant, Natalie, take it just in case!" An heiress thrust her umbrella into Natalie's hands, then sheltered under her boyfriend's.
Several people approached Natalie, offering different kinds of help. She was moved and a bit flustered, repeatedly thanking them and declining their offers.
"Oh right! Natalie, this jacket is really windproof, let me give it to you!" Noah, about to take off her own jacket.
"No need," Oliver wrapped his arm around Natalie's shoulders, stepping forward to place her behind him, his gaze growing cold and nearly indifferent, as if he couldn't bear the sight of what was happening.
Noah felt a rush of fear. "Did I do something wrong, Mr. Windsor? I was just being considerate of your wife!"
"Take the umbrella," Oliver directed Natalie.
Confused, Natalie gripped the handle of the umbrella, only to be wrapped in Oliver's coat as he shrugged it off and draped it over her.
Done with his gesture, Oliver cast a glance at Noah, her look shouting, "See, she doesn't need your clothes."
Noah: "..."
The crowd: "..."
"Miss Lilian never lies to us; Mr. Windsor's possessiveness is indeed overwhelming, protecting even the clothes on her back!"
Wait a minute.
Weren't the two of you arguing? How come you suddenly made up and started showing off your affection?
For the safety and benefit of the majority, the in-charge had to lead the main group on, staying in touch with additional support. Concerned for Natalie and Oliver, besides leaving some bodyguards, he contemplated leaving a few attendants behind.
"Any volunteer?" he queried.
"I will," declared Casey, stepping forward.
The other staff exchanged hesitant looks, none too keen to stay. Caught in the wind and rain, without food or drink, it was far more appealing to follow the crowd downhill for a feast and a hotel stay.
"Anyone else?" the in-charge frowned and asked.
If there were no volunteers, he'd have to choose.
Natalie quickly glanced at Oliver, and seeing no objection from him, she pointed at Casey: "She will be enough."
Natalie found the day's events odd and, out of caution, didn't want to trust just anyone to stay behind. Now, with Oliver's people and the thoroughly trustable Casey staying, it felt right.
Everyone was pleased with her request, and one thought crossed the minds of the uninformed: Natalie's too kind!
"Come here," Natalie beckoned Casey.
With a nod from the in-charge, Casey approached Natalie.
"You use the umbrella for now," Natalie offered, extending the freshly received umbrella to Casey. Doubting the appropriateness of her gesture, she turned to the generous lady who had provided the umbrella, "Miss Sanders, may I let her use the umbrella temporarily?"
Miss Sanders, flattered, nodded vigorously, "Of course! Absolutely!"
Oliver's four bodyguards in the car and the one disguised as a driver stayed, while the rest of the convoy left in a grand procession.
Half an hour later, the convoy reached its destination.
With such an incident fresh in mind, people gathered in small groups to chat and discuss.
The women, in particular, were thrilled:
As Natalie thanked me with a smile, I couldn't help but stare. My gosh, she was a looker!
"Her skin is flawless, and those eyes... they just exude warmth. She's really pleasant to everyone," I gushed.
"Ah, I can't believe Natalie knew my last name, Saunders, even though I hadn't spoken to her before. I thought she didn't even know who I was! She's like an angel with impeccable manners and a gentle heart!"
A group of rich kids stood there with their jaws dropped: "Are you ladies always this fickle? Weren't you just trashing Natalie on the first day of the event and waiting for her to slip up?"
"Things change; have you never studied philosophy? Times are different now!"
"We didn't really know Natalie at first and misunderstood her. Tell me, who wouldn't adore a beautiful, well-shaped, charming, and talented lady?"
"Exactly! Who wouldn’t? You guys are clueless, nearly blind!" Saying someone like Susan is better than Natalie? They must be visually impaired!
The wealthy young men were speechless: "Right, right, it's our lack of understanding."
We're often at odds with women because we're not as changeable.
"You can never win an argument or reason with women! "
As the rain intensified, the persistent pitter-patter and the mist blurring everything, wisps of rain mist swirled through the woods.
Natalie wanted to shout over to Lucas from behind a massive boulder, but the rain drowned out any chance of being heard.
Five bodyguards formed a protective circle around Natalie and Oliver, safeguarding them on all sides.
"Ma'am, don't worry. Our walkie-talkies have enough range to reach them," the bodyguard said, pressing the device to his ear.
After a brief wait, the other side connected.
He inquired about their situation and, after ending the conversation, informed, "Mr. and Mrs. Oliver, Mr. Watson and Miss Lilian are still safe, though the co-driver's bodyguard sustained a minor injury. The main issue is the vehicle—it's broken."
With the vehicle broken, they were stranded.
So what would they do once everyone regrouped?
"Sir, the event organizers report a landslide has blocked the mountain road; rescue will be delayed," another bodyguard reported after finishing his call.
Oliver's expression didn't change, but a flash of concern flickered in his eyes.
It was almost too convenient that the incident happened right when a rescue from below became impossible.
Natalie walked up to the boulder and gave it a tentative push, but it was immovable—solid and heavy.
"This isn't going to work," she muttered. The dangers of rain were bad enough without adequate food, and to make matters worse, Lucas couldn't afford to get sick.
