Chapter 1076 Jane, What Do You Want to Do?
Anthony had already heard from the servants on his way back about what Ann had said to Jane.
One of Ann's remarks was, "You're living in my son's house."
Anthony knelt in front of Jane, holding her small, cold hand resting on her knee.
"Jane, how about I give you this house? From now on, you are its owner." His tone was like coaxing a child throwing a tantrum.
In any case, he had bought this house for Jane because she liked it.
"No." Jane stared at the patterns on the carpet, refusing to look at him.
When Jane was angry, she wouldn't even bother to look at others, just like she was treating Anthony now.
Anthony opened his mouth but couldn't think of a way to make it up to her, not even knowing how to cheer her up.
He was never good at making her happy. Jovan used to say that Anthony was incredibly lucky to have Jane's affection.
"Jane, what do you want?" After a long pause, Anthony spoke again, "You used to say you liked Dawnstar. We can temporarily move there and buy a big house in the town."
It was Jane's wish to buy a house in the town of Dawnstar and going there for vacations.
She had only mentioned it once, but he remembered it ever since.
Jane's gaze shifted from the carpet to Anthony, her eyes cold. "You want me to move abroad because your mother is here?"
To make way for Ann?
"No." Anthony gently explained, "You can be wherever you want. I just want you to be happy."
"Happy?" Jane found the word somewhat unfamiliar. "I don't think I've been happy for a long time."
Anthony felt a sharp pain in his chest, even his breathing hurt.
Her unhappiness stemmed from him.
It was all his fault.
She hadn't wanted to be pregnant in the first place, and now she had to endure Ann's mockery.
It was all his fault.
"I'm sorry." He knelt on the ground, worried, and held Jane in his arms. "I'm sorry, Jane."
Jane looked at Anthony with a faint curiosity, as if he were a stranger. "Anthony, I can't believe you're apologizing so eagerly. I thought I would never see a day like this."
Before Anthony could speak, Jane continued, "But I've always thought 'sorry' was the most useless thing."
Sorry, what could it make up for?
To give each other an out or to ease their minds?
But she didn't want to give Anthony an out now, nor did she want to give herself one.
"What do you want, then?" Anthony asked, leaving the choice to Jane.
"What I want, does it matter?" Jane's expression became more serious, clearly having something she wanted to discuss with Anthony.
"You can tell me," he said.
"Take me to see Jovan." Jane didn't even ask if Jovan was safe now.
Anthony was briefly stunned but didn't beat around the bush. "When did you find out Jovan was safe?"
Jane broke free from his embrace and leaned against the sofa. "You haven't mentioned Jovan's news lately. Either something bad happened to him, or he's perfectly fine. I asked around, and Ainslee has been very relaxed recently, which suggests that she didn't lose Jovan—her right-hand man. So, Jovan is doing well."
Jane used to avoid mentioning Jovan in front of Anthony, fearing Jovan's situation would be exposed. But now, it was clear Anthony already knew about Jovan's situation, so there was no need for pretense. He might as well be straightforward.
Anthony listened to Jane's analysis, a quick flash of pride in his eyes. His woman was so smart!
But he said, "No."
Jane withdrew her hand from Anthony's palm, her rare interest instantly fading. "Why not?"
"Jovan is in Veridiania now, it's not safe," Anthony said. "It's been unstable there recently."
Jane's heart skipped a beat at the mention of Veridiania.
Veridiania was not only unsafe but also had harsh conditions.
"Don't worry, Jovan is very capable." Anthony hadn't told Jane about Jovan's whereabouts to avoid her worrying.
Jovan was in Veridiania to secure resources and diamond mines for Ainslee, accompanied by top-notch mercenaries, even safer than within the Richardson family's territory.
"If you won't take me to see my brother, then I have another request," Jane said.
"Go ahead." Anthony had a feeling it wouldn't be something he wanted to hear.
"I don't want this child."
Anthony's pupils contracted sharply, immediately rejecting. "No."
Realizing his tone was too harsh, he gently tucked Jane's hair behind her ear, softening his attitude. "Jane, didn't we agree on this matter before?"
They had agreed to keep the child.
"Anthony, just because your mother said a few words to me, you don't have to treat me so cautiously, as if I'm a fragile porcelain doll," she said.
Anthony's throat tightened, unable to speak.
Jane made it sound easy.
But was it "just a few words"?
If another woman were treated like this by the grandmother of her unborn child, she would probably be crying her heart out.
Anthony want to slap himself.
It was his fault for not protecting her well!
"Anthony, don't speak yet." Jane was very calm, as if discussing a business deal, "I did agree to have this child before, but I didn't know your mother would be so against it. I may not love this child, but I want to give everything they deserve—a father's expectation, a grandmother's love, but not your mother constantly insisting on an abortion."
At this moment, she realized the child meant more to her than she thought.
She couldn't irresponsibly bring him into the world.
"Why aren't you saying anything?" Jane stared at Anthony, only met with his silence, not a single word in response.
"Jane Watkins," he addressed her formally, seriously discussing the issue. "You know I can't agree to this request."
Even Jane's request to see Jovan might have been a setup.
First, she proposed something Anthony would never agree to, then she presented her real request.
Unexpectedly, Anthony still refused without hesitation.
