Chapter460

Lilian could smell the fresh and clean scent of youth on Lucas, like sunshine.

"After chemotherapy, I lost all my hair and became skin and bones. My features hollowed out, and my complexion turned pale. I was ugly and always on the brink of death," Lucas recalled his past self.

It was at that moment that he understood why he didn't want Lilian to accompany him for check-ups. He was worried about her seeing any negative outcomes. He feared that if she saw those patients tormented by illness, she would be disillusioned and scared because he was once like them.

Even now, there was a possibility that he might return to that state. How could someone like him good enough for Lilian?

"Lucas, you're lying to me. That person you mentioned was never good-looking to begin with, but you are. Even if you're thin, it wouldn't make you ugly," Lilian said, disagreeing.

Stunned by her words, Lucas let out a light chuckle, tinged with amusement and self-mockery. "Did you see just the patient on the bed who relapsed?"

"His eyes, nose, and mouth were all bleeding, and his ears too," Lilian replied.

"I might end up like that too," Lucas said, watching for Lilian's reaction.

Lilian blinked, tilting her head as she looked at Lucas.

"Are you afraid?" Lucas waited a long time for Lilian to speak. He couldn't read her current emotions.

Lilian raised the corners of her mouth, stepped forward like a little sun, and gently hugged Lucas. Due to the height difference, she could only reach around Lucas's waist, patting his back repeatedly.

"I'm not scared. I know you're scared," Lilian consoled. "Don't be afraid, Lucas. The doctor says you're very healthy, and we'll all help you. You'll be all right."

'Afraid?' Lucas nearly retorted with subconscious ridicule and rebuttals.

But he looked at Lilian in his arms. Her golden curls were brushing against his T-shirt, and her head only reached to his chest. She was comforting him.

"Lilian, do you know what you're doing?" Lucas's voice was hoarse.

"I do," Lilian raised her head, her hands not leaving his waist. "I'm comforting you, giving you a sense of security."

Lucas looked up at the sky, struggling to raise his lips in a smile, but he dared not let Lilian see his smile and the moisture in his eyes.

'You certainly have no idea what you're doing,' he thought to himself. 'You have no idea how your actions might lead me to misunderstand and be moved.'

In the following days, people at the Rosewood Estate and the secretaries of the president of RK Group accustomed themselves to Oliver's unwavering attention to Natalie.

He was always by her side, taking care of her and sending various premium dishes to the office every day, while Natalie remained utterly indifferent to Oliver.

It seemed Oliver had come to accept this situation. He occasionally spoke to her, his voice soft and questioning, often bending down to be at her level, even kneeling on one knee before her.

The tears were a mix of indulgence, tenderness, and concealed hope. A hope that would dissipate like bubbles when Natalie failed to respond.
