Chapter 403 I Like Him
Jane came out of the restroom cubicle and bumped into a woman who was sniffling, her eyes slightly red, clearly having just cried.
It was the woman who had been holding Anthony's arm earlier.
The woman looked up and met Jane's gaze in the mirror, quickly sniffed, and turned around to conceal her disheveled appearance.
"Hello, Jane. I'm Aurora." Aurora's voice, as she greeted Jane, still carried a hint of post-crying nasal sounds.
"Hello," Jane reluctantly responded coldly, bypassing Aurora to wash her hands at the sink.
"Jane, do you... still need Anthony?" Aurora asked.
Jane looked at the slightly uneasy woman in the mirror and felt like she was bullying a child. "What's it to you?"
"I... I like him! I like Anthony!" Aurora looked at Jane, her voice rising as if making a declaration, but also as if cheering herself on.
Jane paused with her hands, slick with handwashing gel. Her eyelids twitched, and her expression grew colder. "And what does that have to do with me?" Jane grabbed a paper towel and walked away, drying her hands as she went.
Aurora intercepted Jane's path, "Jane, if you and Anthony break up now, can I pursue him?"
If they break up...
Jane stopped in her tracks, turned around, and saw Aurora summoning courage, looking at her expectantly.
After encountering so many scheming women over the years, this was the first time Jane couldn't decipher Aurora's intentions. She couldn't tell if Aurora was truly naive or just pretending to be.
Jane disliked dealing with people like her the most. If Aurora was genuinely naive, Jane would feel guilty after bullying her.
"First, Anthony and I broke up a long time ago. Second, I'm not his girlfriend or his mother, so whether you pursue him or not has nothing to do with me. Third, I have a bad temper, so it's best if you speak to me as little as possible, understood?"
Jane didn't wait for a response. Whether Aurora understood or not was none of her concern. She hastily walked away in her high heels.
A few steps later, her footsteps abruptly stopped.
Anthony leaned against the restroom doorway, cigarette in hand. He turned his head upon hearing the sound and looked at Jane.
Jane changed her path on the spot and turned in the opposite direction of Anthony.
She was always a fast walker, but now she hastened her pace, walking briskly, yet still unable to match Anthony's speed. Her wrist was gripped by someone chasing her from behind.
The two of them stood frozen for a few seconds.
Jane turned around, her tone polite yet mocking, "Mr. Clark, by holding my hand like this, are you being fair to your fiancée?"
Even though Jane and Anthony's relationship had started to ease up, everything fell apart when news broke out of Anthony's impending engagement. All their efforts and compromises turned to dust.
Those tender moments they had shared were not a reunion of broken hearts; they were ultimately an illusion.
"That was my mother's doing," Anthony realized Jane was trying to free herself and tightened his grip on her wrist.
"I don't care about that anymore."
Anthony closed his eyes. "Jane, back then I could've explained, but as soon as you heard the news, you ran away. What else do you want from me?"
Anthony immediately regretted his words. His tone was too harsh. He could bear to see a furious Jane, a sorrowful Jane, or even a proud Jane.
But what he couldn't accept was this indifferent Jane, devoid of any emotions, as if she had no hatred or love towards him!
"Let go of me!" Jane struggled to break free, but Anthony held onto Jane's waist and pinned her against the wall as he leaned in for a kiss.
Jane couldn't break free and could only endure Anthony's frenzied kisses. He seemed to have a cold and dominant personality.
Jane slapped him, with a considerable amount of force, causing Anthony to slightly turn his head.
"Is this amusing for you?" Jane glared at him.
Anthony stared at her, thinking to himself that whether it was amusing or not, it wasn't for her to decide.
"Is this amusing, Anthony? Perhaps it's fate. Your mother will never approve of us being together. You can't let go of your mother, and she won't accept me. I also can't let go of my brother... It was my mistake to come to the hospital and find you on my initiative. I admit it. I now know that my delusion was in vain."
With a cold expression, Anthony asked in an unrelated manner, "Does this mean I can't have any of your photography works because of this?"
"Yes. If we're ending it, let's end it completely."
‘It should have been ended cleanly long ago. Leaving nothing behind.’
In a place where no one was around, Jane supported herself against the wall, feeling drained. She felt physically exhausted and even more so emotionally. She sent a text message to Natalie, telling her she would come back early.
The person in charge of the exhibition hall called again, "Jane, the procedures for your three artworks have been completed, and the buyer is here. Do you have time to come and meet them?"
It's customary to meet such a major buyer in person.
Jane didn't want to go, but other people had spent so much money on her artwork because of Anthony. She couldn't think of a convincing reason not to.
Jane tried to recall the buyer's name in her mind.
Just as she was about to agree, Jane faintly heard a warm male voice on the other end of the phone, as if he was saying something to the person in charge.
The person in charge said, "Jane, the gentleman said if you have something to do, you don't need to meet him. He truly likes your artwork."
Jane's mood improved a little because of this stranger, and she thanked the person in charge on behalf of the other party.
Aurora covered her mouth and leaned against the wall. Her mind was filled with the scene she accidentally witnessed earlier in the bathroom.
She didn't expect Anthony, who was usually cold-hearted, to kiss someone like that. It was a forceful and aggressive kiss, filled with desire, but more than anything else... a struggling love.
She also didn't expect Jane to slap Anthony, and yet he wasn't even angry?!
Although Aurora was the same age as Jane, she couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration for her strength. She was a high-born lady; and had heard of Jane's name and deeds since she was young. And used to think of Jane as a goddess-like figure, someone she could only admire from afar.
And now, she must compete with her hero for the same man? She knew she couldn't win... but she liked Anthony, very much, and she didn't want to let go!
Aurora's mind was in a mess, and suddenly a tall figure blocked the light in front of her.
"Ah!" Aurora exclaimed in fright, nervously looking at Anthony.
"Anthony... I didn't..." Aurora wanted to say, "I didn't mean to see it," but facing Anthony's stern gaze, she immediately changed her words, "I didn't see anything!"
Anthony nodded and continued to stare at her.
"I... I won't tell Auntie either," Aurora quickly added.
Anthony responded with a grunt and told Aurora, "Let's go."
"Anthony, do you... do you really have to like Jane?" Aurora hurriedly caught up with him.
"That's not something you should be concerned about."
