Chapter 1144 You're Drunk

The other end of the phone was dead silent.

Anthony stared out the car window into the endless darkness, feeling a crushing sense of loneliness.

"Mr. Clark? Anthony?" Calvin glanced at the call screen, puzzled. "Didn't hang up; is the signal bad?"

"Calvin," Anthony finally spoke, "you probably have never truly loved anyone."

Calvin was baffled.

"You like Jane, but it's just that—liking," Anthony explained.

To Anthony, Jane was the light of his life.

How could someone in darkness willingly give up the light?

Calvin still didn't get it. "Mr. Clark, what do you want? If you're coming, I'll tell Jane."

Calvin wasn't about to be Anthony's spy.

"I'm not coming," Anthony said.

It wasn't the right time.

"Keep an eye on her for me. Don't let her drink too much, and make sure she eats less spicy food," Anthony requested.

"Okay," Calvin replied.

But then it hit him. "Wait, why should I do this for you? You and Jane aren't even that close right now. My relationship with Jane is closer than yours!"

"Don't tell her I contacted you, or she'll hold a grudge against you, too," Anthony said, then hung up.

Only then did Calvin realize he had unknowingly fallen under Anthony's control.

Clearly, Calvin wasn't on Anthony's side, but somehow he had become his accomplice!

Anthony was right! He couldn't tell Jane about this, or it would mess up his relationship with her. Anthony might even tell Jane that he liked her.

But wasn't it normal to like her? Every guy in school had a crush on Jane at some point.

But Calvin was scared; he didn't dare say anything.

"Who called? Jovan? Did he find someone to settle the score so quickly?" Jane asked Calvin.

Calvin nervously shoved his phone into his pocket. "No, it was my dad."

Jane eyed Calvin suspiciously. "That's fine, but why do you look like you're carrying a heavy burden? Don't you want to acknowledge your dad anymore?"

Calvin didn't want to talk.

How did he get so unlucky, getting caught in the mess between Jane and Anthony? He couldn't afford to offend either of them!

Calvin tried to get Jane to drink less, but she still ended up nearly drunk.

Most of the others were also half-drunk, calling their household staff or drivers to pick them up.

But Jane had only one relative, Jovan, who was out of the country. So, Calvin was responsible for taking Jane home.

Calvin was still quite sober, mainly because he didn't dare drink much, seeing that he couldn't stop Jane from drinking. He was afraid something might happen to her.

"Jane, time to go," Calvin said, supporting Jane as they walked out. "This way, watch the steps, steps!"

"I'm not going back!" Jane waved her hand. "I haven't had enough! Where is everyone?"

"They've all gone home. You should go too," Calvin said, preparing to call a cab.

"I don't want to go back." Jane struggled.

"No, you do," Calvin said, trying to appease Jane.

'Do I?' Jane tilted her head in confusion.

Suddenly, she fixed her gaze on something. Across two large streets, she seemed to see a black SUV parked under a big tree. There appeared to be a man in the driver's seat, with a red glow flickering there.

"Calvin, look, isn't there someone over there?" Jane squinted in the direction of the SUV, trying to see clearly, but everything was a blur.

Calvin broke into a cold sweat.

There was indeed someone there, holding a cigarette; the glowing tip was the only light in the darkness.

Under the dim streetlight, Anthony's features were faintly discernible.

The Anthony who said he wouldn't had come!

"No! You're seeing things!" Calvin immediately denied it, glancing at the ride-sharing app. The car was still a bit away, and he grumbled, "Why is this car so slow!"

"No! I'm not seeing things! There's really someone there! Look!" Jane pulled on Calvin's arm, insisting he look.

"I looked, and there was no one. It's an empty car. You said it yourself; it just seems like it." Calvin felt miserable.

'An empty car? No one?' Jane thought.

Jane tilted her head, continuing to look, starting to doubt her eyes. "Am I drunk? Seeing things?" she asked.

Calvin blocked her view and said, "You're drunk. You're seeing things."

It wasn't until the burning cigarette touched his fingers that Anthony snapped out of it.

Rationally, Anthony knew he shouldn't be here. Showing up in front of Jane without a complete plan would only make her wary and resentful.

But his body had made the most honest choice faster than his mind.

Anthony just wanted to make sure Jane was okay.

He wanted to see what Jane, whom he had lost, looked like now.

When Jane's gaze fell on him, Anthony was so panicked that he forgot to move or breathe. He sat there motionless, letting the cigarette glow in the dark.

Amidst the guilt and panic, there was an indescribable excitement. Deep down, he even hoped Jane would see and recognize him.

Even if she was angry, Anthony hoped she would come over and say something, anything, even if it was to curse him, hit him, or tell him to get out of her sight.

But she didn't.

Soon, Calvin put Jane into a car, and they both disappeared from Anthony's view.

For a moment, Anthony even wanted to drive up and block their car, taking Calvin's place to send Jane home.

Once Jane was in the car, she settled down, leaning against the door, half-asleep.

"Lean on me; it's more comfortable," Calvin said, moving Jane's head to his shoulder.

Jane stubbornly moved back to the door, looking at Calvin with a dazed but serious expression. "I can't sleep on your shoulder. Your shoulder is for your girlfriend. Got it? No wonder you can't find a girlfriend!"

"What did I do to deserve this!" Calvin muttered to himself.

"Wake me when we get home," Jane said.

"Okay, Jane," Calvin said through gritted teeth, resigned to his fate.

Half an hour later, the car stopped in the residential area.

Calvin wasn't a resident, and Jane was out of the gated community, so the cab couldn't enter. The property management had prepared a shuttle.

As Calvin helped Jane out of the car, a rugged SUV pulled up behind them.

The window rolled down, revealing Anthony's face.

Jane was already exhausted, and Calvin helped her into the shuttle, where she dozed off against the seat.

Anthony got out of his car and walked over to Calvin. "I'll take her home."

Married to an Ugly Husband? No!
