Chapter 482

"Why are you making a fuss now?" James asked impatiently as he tossed his tie aside.

Helen circled around James, sniffing the air around him before she chuckled disdainfully. "Your shirt is tainted with her scent! How can you come back to me directly from your mistress' bed? Can't you at least clean yourself before you meet me?"

"Helen, how many times must I explain? She's merely a friend," James replied, his voice laden with frustration. Unwilling to engage further with Helen on this topic, he asked, "What exactly did you do to Oliver and his wife?"

"A friend? Who are you attempting to fool?" Helen disregarded her husband's question, consumed by her wild suspicions. "James, I know that you’ve never loved me. You married me solely because I was pregnant with Samuel at that time. Would you have proposed if there had not been a pregnancy? Are you still pining for Nina even though she's long dead?"

"Helen, Nina was your sister! How could she speak about her in such a manner? My sister? My sister wouldn’t have stolen my man!"

James was furious. Throughout the years, he and Helen had moments of harmony, and there were times early in their marriage when he genuinely cared for her. However, Helen's distrust and bitterness had gradually eroded his feelings for her. He wondered if she might have been involved in the misfortune that befell Nina, but that seemed implausible. Helen and Nina were, after all, sisters.

"I have no desire to revisit the past, Helen. Oliver's condition is that you must leave the country permanently, and unless you confess your actions, I'm powerless to help you. Without my support, you may end up abroad alone," James stated, aware that both the Hastings' legacy and wealth were deeply rooted in American soil; leaving was not an option for him.

"James, is there a need for my family and the Hastings family to be afraid of Oliver? Can't we stand up to the Windsors? Admit it, you just don't want to help me!' Helen retorted. Her gaze fell on their wedding photograph on the nightstand, and she noted once again how there was no joy on James' face.

"Do you think that Oliver only has the Windsor family supporting him?" James asked.

He thought that arguing with a fool was a waste of time. Did she genuinely think that Oliver could pose a threat to the likes of Henry, Victoria, and Edwin with just the Windsor family's support? Could he afford the lavish Rosewood Estate on the backing of the Windsors alone? Would he dare to appear uninvited, demanding that Helen leave the country if he only had the Windsor family as his support?

In short, the combined strength of the Hastings and Helen’s own family paled in comparison to Oliver's strength.

"Helen, it would be wise for you to personally apologize to Natalie and Oliver. I’ll try to find a way to..."

"Apologize? I'll never do such a thing! That b*tch Natalie got what she deserved after what she did to our daughter," Helen retorted defiantly.
