Chapter 1109 There Won't Be a Future
Jane lay on the bed, trying to convince herself that the bad news from the hospital was just a nightmare. Maybe Anthony never went on that business trip, and she never went to the hospital alone for her prenatal checkup.
"You're awake," Anthony said, setting his laptop aside and helping her sit up. "You can't sleep all day. Let's go downstairs and eat. Billy made your favorite."
"Okay," Jane replied, her voice flat as she instinctively touched her pregnant belly.
"Is the baby bothering you?" Anthony asked, concerned.
"No, it's not," she said.
"If he does, I'll make sure to bother him back in the future."
'There won't be a future,' Jane thought silently.
Suddenly, Anthony knelt on one knee, making her startled. He picked up her slippers and put them on her feet.
"You shouldn't bend over now," he explained. "If you feel uncomfortable here, we can go back to Emerald Gardens."
Jane's eyes stung, as if tiny white ants were gnawing at her heart, causing a pain that made it hard to breathe.
She glanced around the living room, noticing Ann still hadn't returned.
A servant brought over two bottles of vitamins and calcium tablets. "Ms. Watkins, did you take these during the day? If you did, you don't need to take them now."
"I took them," Jane said, trying to sound casual. "Why did Mrs. Clark suddenly think of giving me these?"
"It was when Aurora visited Mrs. Clark last time and brought them for her..." The servant stopped abruptly, looking terrified.
"Aurora?" Jane's gaze turned icy.
The servant trembled, knowing she had misspoken but had to answer. "Yes."
Aurora was always showing up like a bad penny!
So, were Ann and Aurora planning all this?
Ann might not like the child in her belly, but even kids know you don't harm something just because you don't like it. Why didn't Ann get that?
Because of the Watkins family's connection, Ann had once lost a child, and Jane had always felt guilty about it.
Jane didn't want to think badly of Anthony's family, but now, Ann had given her the so-called calcium and vitamin tablets sent by Aurora, harming the baby in her womb. That was a fact.
Ann and Aurora were close, and that was also a fact!
How could Jane convince herself that Ann had no ill intentions? It was impossible.
Ann didn't return until eight or nine in the evening. When she reached the door and heard that Anthony was back, she happily entered the house.
"Anthony, why did you come back early? Why didn't you tell me?" A mother always wants her son close by.
Anthony looked at Ann with cold eyes.
Ann suddenly remembered what she had done and felt a pang of guilt. She asked, "You didn't come back early because of Jane, did you?"
Anthony didn't answer, but his silence confirmed Ann's suspicion.
Normally, Ann would be upset if Anthony delayed work because of Jane and would blame her for it. But today was different.
She was flustered. "Anthony, I really had an urgent matter. Aurora had a car accident, and nothing is more important than a life. I couldn't just..."
"A fender bender counts as a car accident?" Anthony shot back.
When Ann got Aurora's call, Aurora sounded anxious and scared. Ann thought something serious had happened. When she arrived, Aurora claimed she felt unwell, so Ann took her for a full-body checkup, which took time.
"It was my fault, I admit it. But Jane can't complain over such a small matter. Other pregnant women go for checkups alone, too."
Jane stood at her room door, hearing this through the atrium.
She smirked sarcastically. 'Complain?'
'I'm not Aurora; what is there to complain about? So, Ann still thinks I'm trying to drive a wedge between her and Anthony?' she thought.
Jane suddenly felt that her recent compromises and concessions were all a joke.
Jane's mother had passed away early, and she had always envied other kids with gentle mothers and warm maternal love. She didn't want Anthony to have a rift with Ann because of her.
But Ann had always thought she was sowing discord.
She thought Ann would be kind to her child and a loving grandmother. So, even when Ann asked her to attend prenatal classes, she politely declined the teachers in her own way, saving face for Ann.
But in fact, Ann indulged Aurora, ensuring a tragic fate for the child she carried!
"Mom, you know that's other people's pregnant women, not mine." Anthony's tone and expression were severe. "I think it's better if Jane and I go back to Emerald Gardens."
"No, Anthony, this time it was my fault! I'll go talk to Jane." Ann panicked. She still wanted to live with Anthony and her future grandchild!
‘What's there to talk about?’ Jane closed her eyes mockingly.
She didn't want her to leave; probably just wanted to make sure the child in her belly was dead, right?
"Mrs. Clark, did you go see Aurora today?" Jane's cold voice came from the staircase.
She was wearing pajamas with a robe over them, her expression indifferent, showing no emotion, only a bit of fatigue and numbness in her eyes, as if everyone in the house had nothing to do with her.
Anthony hadn't seen this side of Jane in a long time.
Being with this Jane made him feel like they had traveled back in time, to a year ago when he and Jane were still at odds, instinctively making him feel repelled and uneasy.
