Chapter 197 My Wife is Asleep
With just a glance, Natalie found herself inexplicably disliking this woman. She wondered if the aversion stemmed from Hailey's words. If so, then she felt that her heart was a little dark.
When the sound of water from the bathroom stopped, Natalie quickly turned off her phone and feigned sleep under the covers.
A faint glow illuminated the bedroom.
With just a glance, Natalie inexplicably disliked this woman.
Oliver had not yet come to bed, leaving Natalie uncertain whether he was looking at the design draft or work. She forced herself to stop thinking and go to sleep. This effort, however, was marred by unease, a reminder of the overbearing actions from Olive, which she had encountered previously when she was about to open up to him. Now, her emotions seemed even more magnified, like they were out of control.
…
Meanwhile, the organizer of the auction called Susan to inform her of the matter.
"Mr. Windsor purchased your design draft for fifty million dollars! Congratulations!"
Susan responded with gratitude, "Thank you for making it possible. Without your help, I couldn't have added my design at the last minute."
The organizer shared in the joy, pleased with the lucrative outcome of their arrangement with Susan. He did not dwell on why Susan was so confident Oliver would bid on her design draft. To him, all that mattered was that he had managed to earn a significant amount by facilitating a simple and legal transaction. Why would he question it?
After ending the call, Susan eagerly called Oliver.
Noticing the familiar number, Oliver glanced at the bed. When he saw the small lump under the cover, he rejected the call and sent a message instead.
Oliver: [Can’t talk right now.]
Susan's initial smile waned when she read his message. However, she texted back teasingly.
Susan: [Is my fan working? However, I don’t think you’d have the time to text back if you were working.]
Oliver: [My wife is sleeping.]
This made Susan's smile freeze completely. She had been aware of Oliver's long-standing engagement to a woman from the Watson family, a match she deemed unworthy, which was hypocritical since she was not particularly worthy of Oliver herself.
Initially, she knew that Oliver had been indifferent toward his wife, and she could not understand why had changed now.
After a moment, she laughed, feeling that she was overthinking things. Rather than pondering whether Oliver had developed any affection for his wife, she thought it was more likely that he was just being considerate to his wife out of respect.
….
The next morning.
When Natalie and Oliver exited their room, Oliver attempted to hold Natalie’s hand. However, she pulled her hand away and walked forward without pausing.
At some point, Adrian found a chance and approached Natalie, asking to speak to her.
“What is it?” Natalie asked indifferently. Seeing that there was no response, she looked away and said icily, “It seems like you have nothing to say. I’ll take my leave first.”
Adrian suddenly asked, raising his voice, “Do you really think Oliver is a good man?”
Natalie shut her eyes, wondering if Adrian knew what was plaguing her mind.
Adrian continued, “Oliver acquired Susan’s design draft for fifty million dollars last night. Do you know why? Natalie, to him, you’re just a stand-in for Susan! Susan likes Arthur, but Oliver likes Susan. Since he could not win against Arthur, he settled for you as Susan’s replacement. Natalie, I’m the one who truly loves you!”
The sunlight obscured Natalie’s expression. She felt an unfamiliar pain that made her want to scream. However, she inhaled deeply, hiding her inner turmoil as she said, “Adrian, do you think this will change my mind? Moreover, who are you lying to? Yourself or me? I have never met a man who could sleep with another woman while claiming to love another. Moreover… Forget it, you know what you’ve done best.”
“Natalie, I…”
“As for Oliver and Susan, I don’t see a need to talk about that. Bye,” Natalie said, not wanting to talk with Adrian anymore.
Previously, Natalie had wondered where Adrian was when Hailey approached her with those revelations yesterday. She had wondered how Hailey knew about Oliver and Susan. Now, reflecting on it, it seemed like Adrian was the one who had divulged the matter to Hailey, hoping Hailey would reveal the matter to her. After all, Adrian’s words echoed Hailey’s words from yesterday!
