Chapter 996 Joker was Jovan Watkins
"There's really a problem..." someone panicked on the spot.
However, more people remained silent, their minds already calculating how to gather forces to protect their personal safety. Some even considered hiring bodyguards at a high price on the ship. Others began to recall if they had offended anyone, wondering if the person chasing Jane was targeting her specifically or if it was a random attack.
Accidents on cruise ships were not uncommon. Many illegal elements or unscrupulous businessmen tended to do bad things on cruise ships.
Surrounded by the sea, the hunted were easily isolated and helpless, sometimes even dying in silence.
The event organizers immediately set up a screening mechanism. In less than an hour, they informed the guests that six people were missing. Judging by the traces on the ship, these six were probably already at the bottom of the sea. Additionally, one person was found dead in the engine room machinery, most likely a man-made one.
Those individuals were not invited guests but were on the ship as crew members. Upon closer inspection, their identities were indeed suspicious.
Most likely, someone had discovered these people were problematic and directly dealt with the trouble for everyone.
The guests felt a sense of relief. After all, they had experienced the big time.
Since a few individuals had already been dealt with, there should be no problem on the ship now.
Even if there were still some problems, the rest of them wouldn't dare to act rashly.
For the sake of face, no one would suggest an early return of the ship at this time.
Everyone continued with their planned activities. However, upon closer observation, it was evident that they were more vigilant than before. Those who had brought bodyguards on board were almost inseparable from them.
Anthony, using the excuse that Jane was frightened, took her back to the room first.
Jane politely bid farewell to several guests around her. Suddenly, she felt her body lift off.
Anthony had scooped her up by the waist, her fair feet faintly visible beneath the swaying blue dress.
People around looked over, either in shock, exclaiming, or gossiping.
Anthony seemed oblivious to the stares, carrying her towards his suite.
"Does your foot hurt?" Anthony asked.
Anthony knew how delicate Jane was.
"Yes, I twisted it." Jane probably wouldn't have admitted it if she hadn't had to put medicine on her sprained ankle.
On the way back to the room, Anthony instructed someone to send medicine for sprains and bruises to the suite.
"Any other injuries?" Anthony continued to ask.
"No." Jane shook her head.
'Thanks to Jovan,' Jane thought.
Jane was almost certain that those chasing her were mostly dealt with by Jovan.
Jane even suspected that Jovan knew Anthony was on the deck and directed her there.
'But how did Jovan know?
'Could it be that Jovan had arranged for many people on the ship as well?
'What exactly is Jovan's identity and status in the Richardson family now?' Jane thought.
After entering the suite, Anthony carefully placed Jane on the sofa, took the medicine from the attendant. After closing the door,he walked over to Jane and got down on one knee.
He poured the medicine onto his palm, warmed it, and then applied it to Jane's ankle.
"Be gentle!" Jane winced in pain.
"You had promised me not to act recklessly? You were just talking nonsense!" Anthony's words were harsh, but his touch became much gentler.
He said, "Why did you suddenly run off earlier?"
'God knows how panicked I was at that moment!' Anthony thought.
"I..." Jane opened her mouth, unable to expose Jovan.
"What?"
"I heard someone shout joker, and I happened to see someone quickly running quickly around the corner over there. I thought it might be the joker and wanted to chase after him to see who it was," Jane lied swiftly and naturally.
Jane's words weren't entirely false.
Anthony's eyes narrowed as he looked up at Jane, saying, "Did you see who the joker was?"
"No," Jane replied. "That person ran too fast. After I got out, I couldn't see him anymore. Then I realized someone was looking for me, and the rest is as I just told you. I ran for a while."
Anthony stared at Jane.
Jane felt a bit uneasy under Anthony's gaze but didn't show it. Everything she said was true, except for the part about Jovan.
After a moment, Anthony looked away. "How did you escape? Pretty impressive."
"I hid in a storage room. After hearing them leave, I ran to a crowded place." The cruise ship deck was never short of people.
Anthony lowered his eyes, carefully finishing the application of the medicine on Jane's ankle.
"It's smelly and ugly," Jane frowned, looking disdainfully at her shiny ankle now.
Anthony clicked his tongue. Without washing his hands, he sat down on the carpet with his hands spread out.
"Jane, you should know I'm in a bad mood right now. If you make me angry again, I'll smear this on your face," Anthony said, raising his equally shiny hands.
Jane instinctively leaned back, her face full of wariness and resistance towards Anthony's hands, clearly saying, "Don't come near me!"
Anthony snorted in exasperation and turned to wash his hands.
"Anthony, do you really not know who the joker is?" Jane asked from across the living room.
"Do you think I'm lying to you?" Anthony replied, drying his hands with a paper towel.
Jane was silent for a moment, then looked away. "No, I just want to know who it is. He must be related to me. Otherwise, those people wouldn't mention the joker twice."
In her heart, Jane was almost certain that the joker was Jovan.
This could also justify the recent events. Those who targeted Jane wanted to use her to threaten Jovan, and the joker mentioned at the ball today referred to Jovan in the corner.
'Does Anthony really not know, or is he deliberately hiding it from me?' Jane thought.
Jane wasn't sure at the moment.
After taking a shower, Jane came out of the bathroom to find Anthony gone from the suite, leaving only a note in strong, bold handwriting: [Call me if you need anything. The bodyguard is outside, at your disposal.]
Even in this 5G information age, Anthony still maintained the old habit of leaving notes.
Jane stared at the note for a few seconds.
This was the most common way Jane and Anthony communicated when she was still in high school.
After a moment, Jane tore up the note and threw it into the trash, then curled up on the sofa to call Natalie.
Natalie answered the phone, clearly delighted. "Jane! You finally decided to call me?"
Hearing Natalie's sweet voice, Jane relaxed, a slight smile appearing on her face. She said, "How have you been lately?"
"Pretty good."
Natalie and Jane chatted casually for a while.
"The baby's due date is coming up, right?" Jane had been keeping track of the time.
Natalie hummed in response, "Early next month." It was less than half a month away.
