Chapter 982 Cooperation?
Jane completely ignored Anthony's sour expression and said to herself, "I think I heard those two people mention something about 'joker' today?"
A joker implied something mysterious. Of course, it could also just be a simple code name.
"Joker?" Anthony's attention was also drawn to this name, and he silently noted it down, planning to have his subordinates investigate this clue later.
"Do you know anything about the joker?" Jane asked Anthony.
Anthony shook his head.
Jane leaned back in her chair, arms crossed, and thought seriously, 'Could it be that I have offended too many people to attract such enemies?
'No, impossible.' Jane quickly dismissed this idea. Although she had made her share of enemies in the past, most of them were were minor disputes, often involving jealousy and competition between women. If she offended a man, it was because he was too petty and couldn't handle losing.
None of these would warrant hiring a professional to deal with Jane today.
"Did you buy anything?" Jane finally noticed a few shopping bags in the back seat. Upon closer inspection, they were from the store where she had been looking at lingerie earlier.
Anthony responded, "Remember to take them when you get out."
Jane hesitated, surprised that Anthony had bought them after she left.
When the Knight XV arrived at the Clark mansion, Jane unbuckled her seatbelt and grabbed the shopping bags from the backseat, but her wrist was caught by Anthony.
"Not even a thank you?" Anthony said in dissatisfaction.
Jane smiled, having already thought of a reason. "I could consider it a return gift for treating your subordinates to a meal."
Anthony was so angry that he could grind his teeth now.
After Jane went inside, Anthony leaned against the car and smoked a cigarette. He asked Clint, who had arrived shortly after, "Have I offended Jane recently?"
Anthony felt that Jane had been particularly sarcastic towards him in the last two days. She wasn't like that a few days ago.
Clint didn't dare to say it out loud but thought to himself, 'Haven't you always been offending Ms. Watkins? How can you not realize that?'
Anthony, irritated, extinguished his cigar and ended the unpleasant topic. He asked Clint, "What about those two people? Any progress?"
"They're professionals and took an overseas job," Clint replied. That's all they had found out so far. Even after a few more days, they might not learn much more.
Professionals are mercenaries who take money for their work.
Anthony could only think of Jovan.
"Go find out what connection the joker has with those two people."
"Joker?" Clint heard the name for the first time. "Got it! By the way, Mr. Clark, you have an overseas trip scheduled for next week."
It was international gathering of both legitimate and illegitimate high society figures, where one could discuss business and gather information. There might be news about Jovan.
The trip would take about a week, from Southvale to the port, then out to sea and back.
"Get Jane a ticket to accompany me, and find a few haute couture dress studios for me," Anthony instructed.
"Alright, I'll send the studio information to your email in an hour."
Clint smiled, knowing that Anthony planned to take Ms. Watkins along.
As Anthony's close confidant, Clint knew how much Anthony had suffered in the three years after leaving Jane. If Anthony and Jane could reconcile, it would be for the best.
At the hospital, Aurora lay in bed, wracked with pain and helplessness, her eyes staring blankly at the ceiling, like a lifeless shell.
Aurora wanted to have an abortion, but no one agreed.
She felt as if she were carrying a custom-made bomb in her belly, yet she didn't even have the right to remove it.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated.
It was a multimedia message from Hubert.
Aurora's heart skipped a beat. She had no desire to open it, instinctively knowing Hubert wouldn't send anything good.
But human nature was perverse, and instinct couldn't save her from curiosity.
With trembling hands, Aurora tapped on the message. It contained several photos of Jane stepping out of a rugged, imposing off-road vehicle.
Anthony, looking handsome and aloof, was carrying Jane out of a mall.
The woman was indeed Jane, and the man was her fiancé, Anthony.
Aurora recognized the car too. It was the only Knight XV in Southvale.
She had seen this car in the Clark family garage once and had instantly fallen in love with it. She had asked Anthony if she could take a ride in it.
However, what had Anthony said back then? He said, "This car doesn't carry other women."
Aurora hadn't paid attention to the words "other women" at the time, thinking Anthony was just too fond of the car to let any woman ride in it.
It turned out the car was exclusively for Jane.
Aurora had once seen Jane as a role model, but now she saw her as a rival and knew Jane's tastes very well.
That kind of domineering and arrogant off-road vehicle was exactly what Jane loved.
Before Aurora could think further, Hubert called.
"How are you feeling?" Hubert's voice was laced with amusement, like a cold, venomous snake hissing at Aurora.
"Hubert Clark, what exactly do you want?" Aurora asked through gritted teeth.
" I want to cooperate with you," Hubert said. "I heard you were trying to get an abortion but didn't succeed. Do you think I'd tell you everything without having the confidence?"
Hubert's confidence lay in his certainty that Aurora wouldn't dare reveal the true father of her child, and that Ann and the Dewar family wouldn't allow her to have an abortion.
As long as Hubert and Aurora's child existed, Aurora would eventually have to compromise.
"There's one more thing you might not know." Hubert's voice became even more malicious. "Anthony knew from the start that the child in your belly wasn't his. Guess why he allowed you to carry it and enter the Clark family to focus on prenatal care?"
"He knew it?" Aurora felt as if she had been struck by lightning, a cold wave washing over her entire body.
"Where he was that night and whether he slept with you or not, don't you think he knows? So, my dear mother of my child, guess why he let you live in that fantasy, carrying the child to term?"
"Hubert Clark, shut up!" Aurora didn't want to hear it anymore.
'Nothing good ever comes out of Hubert's mouth!' Aurora thought.
Aurora didn't want to listen, but Hubert continued, "I guess he wants you to give birth to a child that isn't his. Then you should be able to figure it out, right?"
Hubert hung up, clearly pleased with himself.
Aurora sat on the bed, stunned, staring at her swollen belly in disbelief. Anthony wanted her to give birth to a child that wasn't his. Either he pitied her, or he wanted to use the child as a weapon to completely sever any possibility of her marrying him.
