Chapter 981 You better shut up!
The two men, who had been keeping their movements hidden, seemed to sense Jane's caution. They exchanged a glance, seemed to reach some sort of agreement, and began to surround Jane from two directions.
Jane had a bad feeling. She quickly surveyed her surroundings and found a complex path with plenty of cover. She hurried along it.
She mostly walked through some shops, amidst the greetings of sales assistants saying, "Welcome, can I help you with anything?" The two men were somewhat annoyed.
If this weren't a luxury mall, they might have chosen to smash the shops directly.
The pursuers were getting closer.
Jane's heart was pounding like a drum. She fixed her eyes on her target, took advantage of the men's blind spots, and broke into a run.
Jane entered a safe passage.
All sounds were muffled by the two heavy doors.
"Where is she?"
"We lost the woman. The Joker family is indeed tricky."
The voices of the two men came from outside.
Outside was the mall floor, with various passageways in different directions, including two safe passageways, two observation elevators, two regular direct elevators, and two escalators going up and down. The two men had lost track of Jane, and they didn't know which way to go.
Jane held her breath, hiding behind one of the safe passage doors, not daring to move. She feared that even the slightest footstep would draw the two men to her.
"Over there!"
Suddenly, one of the men outside called out.
Jane's heart leaped into her throat, her nerves taut, ready for a fight. But then she heard the men's footsteps moving in the opposite direction.
Jane hadn't even had a chance to relax when someone suddenly approached from behind.
Jane's body reacted faster than her mind; she attacked the people behind her. Her back kick was caught by Anthony's hand, and at the same time, he supported her waist.
"Jane..."
Seeing who it was, Jane relaxed completely. If Anthony hadn't been holding her waist, she might have needed the wall to steady herself.
Anthony swallowed the reprimand, asking, "Why did you run off?"
"Are you hurt?" he asked instead.
Jane shook her head and pointed outside.
Anthony said, "My men have led them away."
After realizing Jane was missing, Anthony had immediately checked the mall's surveillance and sent bodyguards to find her.
Anthony glanced at Jane's three inch high heels. The men had been actually drawn away by the sound of her heels.
"Let's get out of here first." This wasn't the place for a conversation.
Anthony took Jane's hand to leave, but her feet seemed rooted to the spot.
"What's wrong?" Anthony asked in confusion.
"I..."
"What's wrong?" Anthony's patience was wearing thin.
"My legs are weak."
Jane didn't want to admit it, but the situation was urgent. She didn't want to stay in this dangerous place just to save face.
Anthony paused for a brief half-second, then laughed, ruffling Jane's hair unceremoniously. "Coward."
Jane thought, 'How am I a coward? I successfully evaded them!
'Anthony just doesn't know how to talk!'
"You need my help right now, so stop cursing me. Don't think I don't know," Anthony said, turning his back to Jane and squatting down in front of her. Then he said, "Get on."
He was offering to carry Jane.
Jane looked at Anthony's broad back and averted her gaze, saying, "No need, I can walk in a moment..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Anthony grabbed her arm and hoisted her onto his back. To keep from falling, Jane had no choice but to wrap her arms around Anthony's neck.
"Jane, what are you sulking about?" Anthony asked as he supported Jane's thighs while walking.
"Nothing," Jane replied with a wooden expression.
"After three years, how can you still be so contrary?"
Once again, Jane felt that Anthony didn't know how to talk. If only he used the word tsundere, it would sound much better.
Anthony carried Jane to the parking lot where Clint was waiting. Seeing Anthony carrying Jane, Clint wasn't surprised and got straight to the point. "Mr. Clark, they got away."
Anthony squinted and frowned, clearly displeased with this outcome.
"Those two jumped into the river," Clint explained.
The river near the southern part of the city flows into the sea, with turbulent waters. Once someone goes in, there's a high chance they won't come out alive. The slim chance of survival would only be possible if they had someone waiting to pick them up and were fully prepared.
Jane realized this was a tough situation.
"Thank you for your hard work, Clint," Jane said, not wanting to make things difficult for the bodyguards. "Treat your brothers to a good meal, and I'll cover the bill."
Before Jane could finish her sentence, Clint noticed that Anthony's face looked extremely displeased.
"You can't even afford a cap, and you have money to treat them to a meal?" Anthony's look was clearly saying, "What a load of crap!"
Clint was puzzled. 'Ms. Watkins has never been associated with poverty,' he thought.
When the Watkins family went bankrupt, Anthony had instructed Clint to find ways to "legitimately" give Jane money, such as winning the lottery, winning a prize with a milk tea, or winning a meal. But they found out that Ms. Watkins was earning hundreds of thousands of dollars a month on a steady basis, being multi-talented with various ways to make money.
'Helping out a poor Ms. Watkins? Not a chance. There is no need for help, and there is no poverty for Jane,' Clint thought.
"I really don't have money to buy you a cap," Jane said with a forced smile.
The implication was that she did have money to treat Anthony's subordinates to a meal.
Anthony's face darkened, and Clint quickly said, "Ms. Watkins, you're too kind. We're just doing our job and getting paid for it."
Jane reasoned, "You get paid by Anthony, not me. Even though we get along well, business is business."
'Who said we get along well? Don't get me into trouble!' Clint thought in horror.
Anthony stood aside with a stern face and urged, "Get in the car."
"Clint, don't forget about the treat. Make sure to thank them for me!" Jane reminded Clint before getting into the car.
Clint closed his eyes briefly, thinking, 'You better shut up!'
The Knight XV roared out of the hospital, and everyone on the road could tell that the driver was in a bad mood, driving wildly and aggressively.
Anthony stared straight ahead, constantly switching between the gas and brake pedals. Jane, being a speedster herself, didn't find Anthony's driving problematic and didn't get car sick.
"Anthony, do you know who those two people were?" Jane asked after thinking for a while. She couldn't imagine what value she had to attract the enemy of such a level.
In the past, when Jane was still the heiress of the Watkins family, it made sense. But now, she was just an ordinary person with a little money, good looks, and multiple talents.
Anthony shot an annoyed glance at Jane, saying, "You've been thinking about this for so long just to ask me that?"
"What else?"
