Chapter 1085 Showing Goodwill
"I just don't want you to offend your mother because of me." This would make Jane feel very guilty.
Anthony opened the car door for Jane, lifting his chin slightly to signal her to get in.
"Anthony, are you even listening to me?" Jane frowned, a bit annoyed.
Anthony pushed Jane into the car, leaned in halfway, and buckled her seatbelt before looking up and asking, "Weren't you the one who used to be the most carefree, Jane?"
"That's what you think." Jane had always been a carefree but thoughtful person.
If she really wanted to be good to someone, she would be extremely good. Even if it meant wronging herself, she would make sure the other person was well, just like she did for Natalie and Flora.
Anthony didn't comment on this, he just patted Jane's hair, "Babe, you don't need to worry about my relationship with her."
"What did you call me?" Jane almost thought she heard wrong and wasstunned for a moment, she looked at Anthony.
Anthony raised an eyebrow but said nothing, his expression a bit awkward, as if he hadn't just called her "babe."
Anthony had called Jane "babe" before, but only in bed.
The driver acted as if he hadn't seen or heard anything, like he was invisible.
Who had ever seen the cold-as-steel Mr. Clark call anyone "babe"? It was shocking!
Since Anthony didn't care about Ann, Jane didn't say more about it.
She thought what happened at the hospital that day was just a whim of Ann's, but in the following days, she received soups from the Clark Manor.
Different soups were sent to her every day.
Jane didn't dare to drink these soups. First, because they were sent by Ann, which made her uncomfortable. Second, she worried there might be something in the soup that could harm the baby.
One must not have the intention to harm others, but must always be vigilant.
The people who delivered the soup from the Clark Manor were polite, but it was clear they didn't see Jane as Mrs. Clark, just a guest.
Jane had seen firsthand how the people from the Clark Manor treated Aurora, so she was acutely aware of their attitude towards her.
The servants followed the lead of their masters. Their attitude showed that Ann did not approve of her.
As for why Ann suddenly started sending her soups suitable for pregnant women, Jane had no idea.
After a week, Jane couldn't help but talk to Anthony about it.
"What does your mother mean by this?" Jane couldn't understand.
It was clearly an attempt to please her, but without approval.
"Did you drink the soup?" Anthony asked first.
Ann sent the soup at noon, when Anthony was usually not around. He only knew his mother sent things to Emerald Gardens and made sure they posed no threat to Jane, so he didn't interfere much.
"No." Jane shook her head.
"Good, don't drink it," he said. "You don't need to touch anything she sends."
Jane thought it seemed like Ann was the mother of Anthony's enemy.
"Your mother sends soup every day, and you don't care?" she asked.
She really didn't want to deal with Ann.
"No need to care," Anthony said.
He was so cold-hearted that he didn't seem like Ann's son at all. Jane even felt a moment of sympathy for Ann.
'Could she be regretting it?' Jane pondered, 'After all, this child is her grandchild. Perhaps all grandmothers like their grandchildren?"
Especially at Aurora and Hubert's wedding, Ann kept sneaking glances at Aurora's son. Originally, that was her grandson, but as soon as the child was born, he became Kimberly's grandson.
Anthony didn't comment much on this.
From what he knew of Ann, her current gestures of goodwill had nothing to do with Jane as an individual. Either Ann wanted a grandchild, or she had some new plan.
But he only cared about Jane.
Jane repeatedly told the people delivering the soup from the Clark Manor to stop, hinting that she wouldn't drink it, but they kept sending it, rain or shine.
That continued for a month.
Soon, tt was time for Jane's prenatal checkup again.
Anthony particularly postponed a company meeting to accompany Jane to the checkup.
Just as they left Emerald Gardens, they saw Ann standing there with a gift box of supplements, waving when she recognized Anthony's car from afar.
Anthony made sure Ann didn't casually show up in front of Jane. And Jane hadn't left the Emerald Gardens villa area during the past period. Ann had finally seized the chance to approach her during the checkup.
"How did she know about the checkup?" Anthony asked Clint in the passenger seat, looking displeased.
Clint wasn't sure either, but guessed. 'There are doctors at the women's hospital who are close to Mrs. Clark, maybe they told her.'
That private hospital had many members of the staff who knew Ann. To outsiders, Ann was Anthony's mother, and it seemed normal for a mother to inquire about her grandchild. So, it was hard to hold anyone accountable for this.
Jane turned her head, pretending not to see Ann at the gate.
She was smart and could easily guess that Ann was waiting for her. If Ann wanted to find Anthony, she could have called him back to the Clark Manor or gone to the Clark Group to find him.
"If you don't want to get out, wait for me in the car." Anthony opened the car door, not thinking it was disrespectful for Jane to stay in the car and not see Ann.
After all, respect went both ways.
"Then I'll stay in the car." Jane didn't stand on ceremony with Anthony; she really didn't want to face Ann.
Ann's gestures of goodwill over the past month had softened her heart, as Jane had a deep-seated sense of guilt towards Ann.
But being soft-hearted and polite to Ann made Jane feel unworthy of herself.
She didn't actually owe Ann anything; it was just that the Watkins family owed the Clark family two lives, causing Ann to lose her father and daughter.
Ann had been waiting outside for two hours and finally saw Jane and Anthony coming out.
Unexpectedly, only Anthony got out of the car.
Ann looked behind Anthony, her question tinged with a bit of displeasure. "Ms. Watkins isn't getting out to see me?"
"What do you want?" Anthony asked directly.
Ann's month-long patience broke instantly, and she put on her elder's demeanor. "Can't I come to see Jane? Anthony, I'm not talking to you, tell Jane to come down and talk to me."
