Chapter 957: Adorably Stubborn

Jane felt a subtle emotion spreading within her, one that was hard to describe. It was like a bottle of sauce stored in a dark place, continuously fermenting until it finally had a hint of flavor. However, the person who had started the fermentation had long abandoned it.

"What's wrong? Not to your taste?" Anthony asked when he saw Jane hadn't started eating.

Jane glanced up at Anthony in silence and put a piece of omelet into her mouth.

"Ms. Watkins, would you like milk or juice?" the attendant asked.

With her mouth full, Jane couldn't speak and just looked at the attendant with wide eyes.

Unexpectedly, Anthony answered for her, "Milk."

"With sugar?" the attendant added.

"No sugar," Anthony replied.

Jane was very particular about her meals. For breakfast, it was always traditional to have milk. Since she was young, Jane had been conscious about her appearance and insisted on drinking milk without sugar, claiming it would make her gain weight.

Jane didn't realize that she had very little fat on her body and wasn't fat at all.

When she ate cake and drank coffee, she never mentioned gaining weight.

Anthony knew Jane had a lot of quirky habits since she was young, but he always indulged her.

After finishing an omelet, Jane found a glass of unsweetened milk already placed on her left side.

The omelet made Jane feel a bit choked, so she took a sip of milk and then belatedly said to Anthony, "Thanks."

Anthony had already finished his breakfast. He always woke up early and exercised in the morning before showering and then having breakfast. When they used to live together, Anthony would often have his dishes washed by the time Jane woke up.

Some behaviors and memories seemed to be ingrained. Jane didn't find it odd to see Anthony sitting at the dining table reading documents while she ate alone.

In the past, Anthony and Jane often did this. The only difference was that back then, Anthony wasn't reading the Clark family documents but rather the work assigned to him by Jovan.

"Jane, did you apply the ointment?" Anthony suddenly asked from her left side.

Jane was momentarily stunned before realizing Anthony was referring to the injury on her back.

"Yes," Jane said, lowering her eyes to take another sip of milk.

Unexpectedly, Anthony suddenly leaned in closer.

Anthony's presence was overwhelming. Jane was startled by his sudden proximity and felt uneasy, only able to sense Anthony's closeness. Then, she took a deep breath.

"What are you doing?" Jane changed her expression. This distance was beyond normal social boundaries and felt quite intimate.

"Jane, you haven't changed a bit in three years. You're still so insincere when you lie," Anthony said sternly as if scolding a disobedient child.

"Why should I be sincere when lying?" Jane muttered under her breath, rolling her eyes.

Anthony raised an eyebrow, his gaze fixed on Jane with an intimidating force, as if compelling a misbehaving child to confess her mistake.

Sadie didn't understand what Anthony and Jane were talking about, but she had a feeling of compromise. The unspoken understanding between Jane and Mr. Clark was something Aurora couldn't penetrate. Aurora clearly couldn't take Jane’s place.

Jane ate a sandwich, feeling suffocated under Anthony's gaze. She shot him a look, saying, "You really are as annoying as ever."

"Seriously, Anthony, who are you to me? Why do you care if I apply the ointment or not?" Jane responded lightly.

The ointment had a terrible smell. Even walking around with it on made her self-conscious. Even though she was no longer the top socialite she once was, she couldn't stand the idea of walking around with that awful smell, especially in "enemy territory".

"Ex-boyfriend," Anthony said.

"What?" Jane thought either her ears or her brain were malfunctioning.

"I'm your ex-boyfriend," Anthony repeated earnestly.

Anthony was answering Jane's earlier question.

Jane laughed in exasperation. "Seriously, Anthony, are you crazy? Are you a cop or something? You're my ex-boyfriend but you have nothing to do with me now."

The Clark family servants were witnessing this argument for the first time, especially seeing Anthony being scolded. They were stunned.

But clearly, Anthony was used to Jane's scolding. His expression didn't change at all.

Just as Anthony was about to speak, a servant came down from upstairs and said to Anthony, "Mr. Clark, Mrs. Clark would like to see you upstairs."

Jane put down her fork, which made a crisp sound against the porcelain bowl.

In the past, Jane's upbringing as a top socialite would never have allowed her to make such a noise while dining, unless she was up to something mischievous.

Sure, Jane propped her chin with one hand and said leisurely, “Ex-boyfriend Anthony, the person you should be concerned about is your fiancée, Ms. Dewar, not me. Got it?"

Her tone was full of sarcasm.

Anthony squinted, curious about how Jane had managed to survive all these years without the Watkins family. It couldn't have been solely the people he secretly sent to protect her.

Anthony couldn't ignore Ann's request. At least he had to put on a show since she was his mother.

"Sadie, make sure she applies the ointment after she finishes eating," Anthony instructed as he walked upstairs.

Sadie acknowledged the order.

Once Anthony disappeared upstairs, Jane said slowly, "I don't want to apply the ointment. I have no reason to listen to him."

"But Ms. Watkins, I have to listen to Mr. Clark," Sadie replied gently.

Jane blinked innocently. "You've listened."

Jane thought, ‘You've listened, even if I don't cooperate with you. It is my business, right?’

Sadie couldn't help but laugh.

Sadie had been in the high society for decades and had seen all kinds of wealthy young ladies. She had seen her share of spoiled and arrogant ones, but Jane was one of the rare few who were adorably stubborn without being annoying.

Such people were rare. They seemed born to live this life with the best resources and love, which allowed them to be willful and stubborn. Yet, they knew when to stop, making them straightforward without being disgusted.

Sadie couldn't help but compare Jane to Aurora. Sadie always felt that Aurora upstairs was a bit too spoiled and arrogant, pretending to be pitiful.

Aurora was probably so fake that she didn't even realize it herself.
