Chapter507
Realization dawned on her when she saw Oliver’s expression. She asked, “Are you still fighting with Natalie?”
She said reproachfully, “One is without a wife and children, and the other has a child but no wife! What a failure!”
With an agility not typical for someone in her eighties, Marjorie left them. She said to the driver, “I don’t want to ride with them!”
Oliver nodded in acquiescence. Marjorie was known for getting her way.Marjorie was quite a character.
“Let her have her own car.”
“I should leave now. I’ll visit Grandma another day,” Arthur said, eager to return to his daughter. Oliver could manage their grandmother on his own.
…
Marjorie had assumed that Oliver and Natalie only had a minor fight. However, upon her return to Rosewood Estate, she learned that Natalie no longer resided there.
"It’s not just a fight? She left home?” Marjorie could hardly believe it.
With his lips tightly pursed, Oliver had no intention of discussing this issue with his grandmother and presented her with Natalie's divorce documents.
After reading the documents, Marjorie placed them down slowly and lamented, "What has come over Natalie? Since when is ending a marriage as easy as declaring it finished?"
"Grandma, Edwin is still in prison. Would you like to visit him?" Oliver attempted to change the subject, carefully setting the divorce papers aside.
"No. My focus is on you and Arthur. Why should I concern myself with him?" Marjorie stated firmly, "I didn’t even return for your father's funeral. Why would I visit Edwin?"
The moment Henry was unfaithful in his marriage and subsequently married his mistress after his wife's death marked the moment Marjorie severed ties with her son, Henry. Dismissing her own son was one thing; acknowledging the offspring of mistresses and subsequent partners was entirely another, thus her prolonged stay abroad.
Oliver nodded, signaling his understanding. He said before heading upstairs, "Liam, please accompany Grandma. Should you need anything, call me."
After Oliver left, Marjorie, who had appeared quite agitated moments before, eased her posture. After making sure Oliver would not return, she grabbed the divorce papers, searching for a place to hide them.
"What are you doing, Marjorie?" Liam inquired.
"Quickly! Fetch me a glass of water!" she commanded.
Assuming she wanted a drink, Liam fetched her a glass of warm water, only to see her ‘accidentally’ spill it over the divorce papers.
Natalie's signatures instantly began to smudge, soon becoming illegible.
"Oh, dear! My hands aren’t as steady as they once were!" Marjorie exclaimed, feigning distress at the sight of the damaged document. She cried out in an exaggerated manner, "What should I do now?"
Liam, maintaining a neutral expression, acted like he saw nothing.
…
When Oliver returned downstairs, he was greeted by his grandmother sitting innocently on the couch, looking up at him with eyes full of guilt, reminiscent of a child caught in mischief but still pretending to look innocent.
"Oliver, I have something I must confess." Marjorie beckoned him closer.
