Chapter 1024 Come over and give me a kiss
'Only a fool would try that,' Jane thought.
However, Jane knew that Anthony indeed had the capability and means to keep her bedridden.
The VIP ward had a special companion bed, not wide, only 0.9 meters, but for a slender woman like Jane, it wasn't too narrow.
The quilt was brought over by Clint, not the hospital's white sheets.
Jane had trouble sleeping in unfamiliar beds. Nestled in the single companion bed, she couldn't fall asleep, thinking about the unfinished conversation from the day before.
"Anthony, are you asleep?" Jane stared at the ceiling. She couldn't see clearly because the lights were off, and only a dim, hazy light was filtering in.
Anthony lay still, not making a sound.
Jane propped herself up to look at Anthony a few times, unable to tell if he was asleep.
Anthony was good at pretending to sleep.
"This bed is a bit hard; I can't sleep," Jane muttered to herself.
As soon as she finished speaking, a voice came from the hospital bed. "You're such a delicate flower."
Before Jane could respond, Anthony patted the bed and said, "Come sleep here."
"Aren't you asleep?" Jane hummed smugly, lying on her side facing Anthony.
The tone made it clear that she had no intention of going to sleep with him.
Jane didn't acknowledge her relationship with Anthony now, even though Anthony had already broken off his engagement with Aurora. Naturally, she had no reason to share a bed with him.
"Anthony, since you know the child in Aurora's belly isn't yours, why don't you tell her? How can you be so sure the child isn't yours?" Jane asked.
Because of his prone position, Anthony's voice sounded particularly deep, which made it soothing .
"Jane, you made me awkward during the day, and now you want me to tell you the story. Shouldn't your attitude be better?"
In the darkness, Jane rolled her eyes.
"How? Tell me. Sing, dance, or perform acrobatics?" Jane said expressionlessly, trying to please him without much sincerity.
Anthony's hand moved, making a rustling sound under the quilt.
"No need to go through such trouble," Anthony said with a hint of a smile in his voice. "Just come over and kiss me."
"Mr. Clark, it's nighttime. It's time to wake up from your daydream!"
"Sleep," Anthony said, as if he didn't care whether she wanted to know or not.
Jane was so frustrated by her own confusion that she couldn't stand it, but she had no way to deal with Anthony. In the end, she just angrily turned her back to him.
Anthony had good night vision. From his angle, he could just see the back of Jane's head.
Jane's hair had grown quite long, reaching her back. When she was without makeup and quiet, she looked particularly charming, lacking the cold and glamorous aura that others often described.
"Promise me one thing, and I'll tell you," Anthony broke the silence.
Jane wanted to show that she didn't care about what he had to say through her silence, but in the end, her curiosity got the better of her. She turned around and asked Anthony, "What do you want?"
"Don't cut your hair."
Jane was silent.
Even though the dim light made it hard for Jane to see Anthony's features, she had a feeling that they were looking at each other at that moment.
The request may seem random, but Jane understood Anthony's intention.
Jane used to have long hair and would go to the salon every month for elaborate treatments to keep it pretty.
After breaking up with Anthony, Jane cut her hair short, just below her earlobes, giving her a more aloof appearance.
"Okay." After a long while, Jane compromised.
Anthony, satisfied with her answer, smiled in the darkness.
"I will answer that why I am so sure the child isn't mine," Anthony said. "Because on the night Aurora claimed to have gotten pregnant, I wasn't in Southvale."
If Anthony wasn't there, it was impossible for him to have had a sexual encounter with Aurora.
"Then where were you?" Jane found it illogical. "If she wasn't sure you were in Southvale, how could she be sure it was you she was with?"
"It wasn't me," Anthony corrected in displeasure.
"Fine, fine, it wasn't you! Go on,"Jane said dismissivly.
"That night was my welcome-back party. After dinner, I left Southvale, with Clint driving, so only a few people knew," Anthony continued.
"Where did you go?"
"Paykston."
Jane was stunned, instinctively thinking of herself.
At that time, Jane seemed to be away from Paykston.
Then she thought, 'Anthony might have gone to Paykston for business.'
"You..."
"To find someone," Anthony interrupted Jane's speculation. "But that person wasn't in Paykston."
Jane could almost hear her own breathing and heartbeat.
Her breathing was a bit rapid, and her heartbeat was tight.
Jane inexplicably felt guilty, as if she had done something wrong.
Jane thought, 'No, why should I feel guilty? There's nothing to feel guilty about! I happened to be on a small island for inspiration at that time. Anthony didn't tell me in advance, and I had no obligation to meet him or wait for him!'
With that in mind, Jane felt much more justified.
"Do you know whose child Aurora is carrying?" Jane pretended she hadn't realized anything.
Anthony didn't make it difficult for her. He simply answered, "Hubert's."
"Your cousin?" Jane was so shocked that she sat up.
Anthony responded affirmatively.
Jane quickly understood. Hubert and Anthony looked somewhat similar. So Aurora kept insisting that the man that night was Anthony. As for why she mistook him, it could be because she was drugged or drunk.
"Then why didn't you tell Aurora earlier? If you had told her, she definitely wouldn't have wanted this child..."
Jane stopped mid-sentence. The question that had been puzzling her all day suddenly made sense.
Anthony didn't interrupt Jane, letting her think it through.
"You deliberately didn't tell her?" Jane exclaimed.
"I just went along with it," Anthony didn't deny what he had done.
Jane frowned, rubbing her temples, as if talking to Anthony, but also to herself. "You didn't tell her the child wasn't yours, so Aurora would exhausted all efforts to keep the child. She thought the child was her ticket to becoming your wife, but it was actually the tool you used to completely remove her."
Jane then realized. "That time Aurora suddenly wanted to abort the child, it wasn't because she was emotionally unstable during pregnancy, but because she found out the truth, right?"
