Chapter 1030 Interesting Equals Foolish
The Cunningham family wasn't among the top ten wealthy families in the country, because they spent the last few decades, even a century, developing abroad. It was only in the past ten years that they had started to shift their assets back to the country.
In terms of both domestic and international influence, the Cunningham family was almost on par with the Clark family.
"You're lying..." Madeline looked at Carol's noble and disdainful expression, instinctively submitting and not daring to say more.
She had long heard that the heir to the Cunningham family was a daughter of the Cunningham family.
'Could this person be Carol?' Madeline thought.
Madeline and Alexandra didn't dare to say another word, forcibly holding each other's hands to steady themselves. Then they hurriedly turned a corner to another hall.
Madeline and Alexandra dared to insult Jane, but as for Carol, they wouldn't even think about it.
Carol wasn't just any ordinary socialite, but she was the rightful heir with real power.
Jane raised an eyebrow in surprise.
The feeling of winning without a fight was quite delightful.
"Ms. Cunningham, thank you!" Jane thanked her gracefully, neither humble nor arrogant.
It was as if Jane was still the socialite from the Watkins family.
To be precise, Jane's confidence never came from the Watkins family.
Carol smiled slightly, just about to speak when several socialites and heirs from other families approached to talk to her.
It was an opportunity for them to make connections with Carol, the heir to the Cunningham family.
"Sorry, I'm here specifically for Ms. Watkins today."
Carol skillfully declined a few conversations and walked around the exhibit with Jane.
Jane gave Carol a puzzled look because of her earlier statement.
Carol shrugged helplessly. "I don't want to prepare for work during my leisure time. My father is in good health, so I don't want to step into middle-aged life prematurely."
It was for middle-aged people to fight for the family honor, status, power, and wealth.
Jane thought Carol in front of her was really unaware of her role as an heir.
However, Jane completely agreed with Carol's sentiment.
She gave Carol a thumbs-up and reminded her, "Ms. Cunningham, you just mocked a bunch of family heirs led by Anthony Clark, Oliver Windsor, and Richard Foster."
Carol fearlessly spread her hands. "If Ms. Watkins doesn't say, and I don't say, who else would know?"
Since Carol said so, Jane felt embarrassed to tattle.
Jane couldn't help but laugh.
"Do you have a grudge against Alexandra and Madeline?" Carol was curious.
In Carol's view, Jane didn't seem like someone who would bother with people like Alexandra and Madeline, who weren't on the same intellectual level with her.
Jane thought seriously. "They have no artistic talent. Does that count as a grudge?"
Madeline was into photography and Alexandra was into painting. They were all in the same broad art field as Jane.
Jane's exceptional artistic talent often made her a target of jealousy.
Carol was stunned for a few seconds, then burst into laughter.
"What are you laughing at?" Jane was confused.
"I used to live abroad and only heard of your name. It is regarded that you're noble and aloof, the pride of Paykston. In terms of talent and beauty, no socialite in the country could compare to you."
Jane had to compliment. "You've been abroad for years and your English is quite good."
"Ms. Watkins, you are really interesting," Carol laughed heartily, "more interesting than I expected."
Jane had to ask again, "Ms. Cunningham, do you usually go online to read the news?"
"What?" Carol didn't get it.
Jane said, "Calling someone interesting nowadays is often synonymous with calling them a fool."
Carol, constrained by the quiet gallery, could only laugh softly.
After wandering for about half an hour, Carol checked her watch and bid Jane farewell. "I have to go back and prepare for middle-aged life."
In layman's terms, she had to go back to work.
Even though the elders of the Cunningham family hadn't retired yet, Carol, as the rightful heir, had already started handling family business. She couldn't miss any important meetings or industry summits.
When Jane saw Carol off at the door, she lamented that her life was not enviable at all.
Jane thought it was better to have a brother to support her. Moreover, receiving a personal fund every month was much more enjoyable than managing a company.
After viewing all the artworks, Jane found a staff member and selected a few pieces, expressing her intention to reserve them.
This exhibition wasn't an auction but a first-come, which posed a problem. The city where the exhibition first arrived would have more choices for participants. In subsequent cities, even if a piece was still on display, it might already belong to someone else.
This also reflected the concentration of capital. The cities where the exhibition first arrived were undoubtedly large capitals with wealthy people, while the rich in other cities could fly directly to the first exhibition to secure the pieces they wanted.
Jane wasn't particularly obsessed with this. She just happened to have time today and didn't want to spend the whole day in the same house with Anthony.
"Hello, I'd like to buy B13, F06, and G11. Are these three pieces still available?"
The staff checked the system and replied, "I'm sorry, ma'am, G11 was already reserved during the second city exhibition."
"Then I'll take the remaining two..."
"I'll take the remaining two! Wrap them up for me!"
Jane was interrupted halfway through her sentence.
Jane found the voice familiar. When she turned around, she saw Madeline and Alexandra walking over in high heels.
'Are these two really that persistent?' Jane thought.
Although she knew many rich kids were idle, she didn't expect them to be so idle as to go out of their way to cause trouble for her.
As a former benchmark in the socialite world, Jane had never done anything so foolish.
"Sorry, ma'am, these two pieces were reserved by Ms. Watkins first," the staff told Madeline.
Madeline placed her hand on the display case, raised her chin, and asked the staff, "Did she say she wanted to reserve them? Did she pay a deposit?"
Jane hadn't pay yet but her intention was clear.
"I can pay in full." Madeline glanced disdainfully at Jane and told the staff, "I'm kindly reminding you that it's the wisest choice to sell the paintings to me. Her family is bankrupt, so can she still afford the paintings? She probably just wants to pay a deposit to save face."
"She" was indeed referring to Jane.
Jane confirmed the prices of the two paintings, one for $20,000 and the other for $32,000. It was just the price of a low-end Hermès bag.
Even though the Watkins family was gone, there still were two rows of Hermès bags in Jane's apartment, with other bags being Chanel and Louis Vuitton.
Jane didn't use Hermès because she thought it looked old-fashioned.
Jane couldn't help but look at Madeline like she was looking at a mental patient.
"Now that Carol is gone, so let's see who can back you up!" An hour ago, Alexandra was trembling, but now she was arrogant.
It turned out that they were sure Carol had left and deliberately came to cause trouble.
