Chapter 753 Engagement Banquet
"In any case, they're just dating; perhaps they'll break up at some point."
"Why are you cursing them to break up? Is that something a cousin or a brother-in-law would say?"
Thanks to Natalie, Oliver now experienced the fickleness of women. It seemed like being pregnant made her much more emotional.
After speaking with Oliver, Natalie had almost accepted the idea of Lucas and Lilian being together.
Taking a step back, Lucas was her younger brother, whom she had watched grow up. He would definitely not mistreat or play with Lilian. At the very least, he would be good to Lilian.
However, despite coming to terms with it, she felt that it was still necessary to have a conversation with the two young ones.
Oliver called Lucas and Lilian to their suite, and just as the four of them sat down and before the formal conversation began, Natalie's phone rang.
It was an unfamiliar number. Natalie instinctively looked at Oliver.
Oliver glanced and said, "It's Richard."
Oliver's ability to remember things at a glance was not just a boast. He had Richard's phone number, as they had briefly worked together. Seeing it once was enough for him to remember Richard's personal cell phone number.
Natalie answered the call.
"Hello?"
"Ms. Watson, this is Richard. I have something I'd like to trouble you with. Are you free tomorrow?"
Richard's voice had a naturally calming quality, but it did not conflict with his assertive business style.
"What is it about, Richard?"
Richard clearly had something important to speak about. However, the fact that he sought out Natalie instead of Oliver made her think of one person: Jane!
"Anthony's engagement banquet is tomorrow, and Mrs. Clark has invited Jane. I'm not at ease, so if you're available, can you go with her?"
"They invited Jane? The audacity of the Clark family!"
Natalie stood up in shock.
Lucas and Lilian were startled and looked at Natalie.
Oliver merely raised an eyebrow. He had no interest in other people's affairs.
"Wait a minute," Natalie said before asking skeptically, "Is Jane willing to attend?"
Based on Jane's personality, after breaking up with Anthony, she should not have any further entanglement with that man. Her pride and sense of morality would not allow it. Moreover, it was Anthony's engagement banquet with someone else.
"Mrs. Clark used Jovan's dignity and reputation as a threat," Richard said, "Mrs. Clark has told many wealthy ladies that if Jane doesn't attend the engagement banquet, it might mean that she still has feelings for her son. She also said that Jovan's sister is nothing more than a timid coward and that Jovan's talent was exaggerated back then."
If Oliver was once praised as astonishingly talented in his youth, then Jovan, who was a few years older, was a legend in the business world at that time.
During the years Oliver withdrew from the public eye, Jovan's name dominated the circle.
Everyone agreed that Jovan truly lived up to his reputation, and Jane, whom he mentored, became an undeniable top socialite.
In a way, Mrs. Clark knew Jane very well and understood that Jovan was Jane's weakness.
"Fine, I'll go."
It was clear that the Clark family intended to humiliate Jane. How could Natalie not attend?
"Then I appreciate your help, Ms. Watson. A private plane is waiting for you at Tycoon City Airport. I've prepared two invitations for you and Mr. Windsor."
Richard was confident from the start that Natalie would agree. He had already arranged everything when he made the phone call, even investigating the schedules of Oliver and Natalie.
Listening to his words, Natalie frowned. "Thank me? No, I should be thanking you."
'I'm grateful to you for caring about my friend like this.'
Natalie was very protective of her close ones. In her eyes, Jane was one of her own, while Richard was an outsider. There was no reason for Richard to thank her. At least not now.
After hanging up the phone, Natalie quickly packed her bags and said to Lucas and Lilian, who were sitting on the couch with confused expressions, "Forget it today. I have something to take care of. We'll talk another day."
But they all knew that discussing such matters required the right time and opportunity. If they missed today, the matter would likely be dropped.
Lilian smiled.
Lucas heaved a sigh of relief and asked, "Sis, did something happen to Jane?"
Natalie nodded.
Seeing that Natalie's expression was not great, Lucas did not probe further. Instead, he asked, "Is there anything I can help with?"
Natalie was about to say no, but she paused and glanced at Lilian before looking at Lucas, warning him, “Don’t be a jerk."
Lucas, caught innocently in the crossfire, said nothing. He knew this matter had something to do with Anthony.
"Leave the luggage," Oliver said, noticing Natalie's flustered movements. He grasped her wrist gently before he continued, "I'll arrange for someone to send these things back to Rosewood Estate. Whatever you need, just buy it when we get there. Bring your ID and phone."
Natalie finally paused and nodded. This was indeed the quickest way.
…
The private jet was already on standby.
Natalie and Oliver quickly boarded the plane.
After settling down, Natalie asked, "Do you know who Anthony is engaged to?"
The news was too sudden, so she had no choice but to ask Oliver.
Oliver surveyed the luxurious private jet owned by Richard. It had to be said that Richard had a keen understanding of people's desires. Everything inside the plane was tailored to his tastes, and even the seats were free of any leather scent. He had to admit that Richard was quite considerate.
"Aurora," Oliver replied.
Natalie searched her memory for this name but found no impression. This indicated that the woman was not from a prominent family in the American business circle.
"How did you know?" Natalie looked at Oliver with suspicion.
"Charles told me."
"Why didn't you tell me then?" Natalie pushed Oliver lightly, her tone tinged with annoyance.
An engagement banquet certainly would not be arranged at the last minute. It would take at least two months of preparation, with invitations sent out a month in advance. With Charles' resources, he should have known about this event early on.
"Natalie, I've told you before. I only care about you; I have no interest in others," Oliver stated plainly. He knew he was indifferent, even somewhat cold-blooded, but he saw no need to conceal this from Natalie, the person he was preparing to spend his life with.
Natalie opened her mouth, unsure of what to say, and ultimately resigned herself to Oliver's choice and attitude.
He was once a person who was not treated kindly by the world, so how could she expect him to be gentle to the world? The fact that he could show her tenderness was already more than she could have hoped for. She felt that she should not be too greedy.
"We'll be landing in two hours. Get some sleep," Oliver said as he dimmed the lights in the cabin and draped a blanket over Natalie.
Natalie shook her head and said, "I can't sleep. I…"
Before she finished her words, Oliver saw her yawning.
