Chapter 1129 Show Some Backbone!
Calvin thought about Jane getting over her illness and decided to switch up his teasing. "How about we head somewhere else?"
Ten minutes later, they were in the game room.
Jane wasn't into card games. She didn't care much since she wasn't hurting for cash.
"Come on, Jane, take the main seat!" Calvin said, trying to be extra nice as he guided her to the main spot.
"No way. It's your birthday; you should sit there," Jane replied.
"Even if it were my 80th birthday, you should still take the main seat. Everyone knows you're in a good mood when you sit there." Calvin laughed.
Jane's mood could swing wildly. When she was happy, she'd give money away; when she wasn't, she could be ruthless at the card table.
The others didn't know about Jane's quirks. They just thought she and Calvin had a special bond and exchanged knowing smiles.
Everyone took their seats.
They'd only played two rounds when a voice came from the door. "Mr. Green, I brought a friend. I hope you don't mind."
Lucy walked in, wearing a black sequin dress and high heels.
"Of course not," Calvin said, then introduced her to Jane. "Jane, this is Lucy Hayes."
Jane raised an eyebrow, and Calvin felt a pang of unease.
Jane said, "No need for introductions. I know her. I saw her at your dad's wedding. If you weren't so busy fighting with your stepmom, you'd remember I argued with her."
Meanwhile, Lucy, having gotten Calvin's permission, went to fetch her friend.
Calvin leaned over to Jane and whispered, "Jane, I swear I didn't know you had issues with her. If I had known, I wouldn't have invited her!"
Jane was about to respond when she noticed a familiar figure entering the room.
Without changing her expression, she whispered back to Calvin, "Calvin, next time I come to one of your parties, it better be your funeral or your 80th birthday."
Her tone was clearly hostile.
Calvin was still trying to figure out how he had upset Jane when he saw Anthony walk in.
Anthony had a stern, cold look, clearly different from their carefree, playboy crowd, but he looked young.
Calvin made a noise of shock, staring at Jane in horror. 'Isn't he Anthony?'
"Calvin, get a grip! Don't embarrass me!" Jane hissed.
The game room fell into a dead silence.
Everyone was stunned, their eyes darting between Anthony and Jane.
Anyone who paid any attention knew about Jane and Anthony's history.
Exes meeting again. This was going to be awkward.
And Jane and Anthony's relationship wasn't just any ex-couple story. Their saga could fill a book.
Most importantly, no one knew where Jane and Anthony stood now!
Anthony saw Jane resting her chin on her left hand, twirling a card with her right, looking bored as she chatted with Calvin.
Calvin was about Jane's age, good-looking, and seemed close to her, which made him stand out.
Lucy, as if just noticing Jane, said deliberately, "Oh, Ms. Watkins, you are here too? Do you mind if Mr. Clark joins us?"
Jane didn't bother hiding her disdain, rolling her eyes and muttering just loud enough, "How can she be a fashion magazine editor when she's blind as a bat? That's a real mystery."
Lucy's face turned pale with anger, but she held it in when she saw Anthony beside her. She had run into Anthony outside the club and immediately thought of bringing him in to annoy Jane. Lucy wasn't confident; she and Anthony had no personal relationship, and he was known for being cold and ruthless. She invited him on a whim, not expecting him to agree.
When Anthony nodded, Lucy was both surprised and thrilled, even a bit excited, wondering if Anthony might have some interest in her. Little did she know, Anthony was there solely for Jane. If Jane weren't at the club, Anthony wouldn't have shown up.
"Continue," Jane said, tapping the table to play a card.
"Huh?"
"Oh, right!"
The people at the table pretended nothing had happened, but their eyes kept darting between Anthony and Jane, eager for drama. Jane hadn't looked directly at Anthony once; her eyes focused on her cards. Her cold and indifferent demeanor made Calvin's heart race. Oh no, Jane's holding a grudge against him!
Calvin's mind raced, quickly coming up with a way to minimize the damage. "Mr. Clark, want to play? I'll give you my spot!" And the chance to lose money to Jane!
Jane shot Calvin a deadly glare. He glanced at her back, as if to say, "Jane, I can't afford to keep losing to you!"
'If I'm going down, might as well delay it a bit!' Calvin thought.
Jane expected Anthony to refuse without hesitation. She'd known him for years and rarely saw him interested in card games or any similar activities.
"Sure." Anthony nodded. "Thanks, Mr. Green."
Anthony had been watching Jane out of the corner of his eye. He could see her growing impatience, but she still acted like she didn't care, not even giving him a proper look.
Everyone exchanged glances, silently communicating.
"They seem normal?"
"Normal? It's the calm before the storm."
Anyone who knew Jane could tell her mood had worsened. Anthony's presence was overwhelming, filling the air around her with his aura.
Anthony, acting as if everything was fine, reminded Jane, "Draw a card."
