Chapter 121 Did I Hurt You Last Night?
When Natalie was taking a bath earlier, she remembered the intelligent voice communication system positioned beside the bathtub. She decided to call Jane to reassure Jane that all was well. Originally, she had intended to fabricate a story to downplay the gravity of the situation. Little did she know that Jane had already managed to locate the elusive Rosewood Estate.
Natalie said tonelessly, "Jane, I've mentally prepared myself for the worst outcome, even before marrying Oliver. Our marriage was never balanced from the start. He's bound by a promise, and I have to submit to reality. So, it doesn't truly matter. As for you, just be good and don’t complicate matters."
Natalie's conservatism stemmed from a lack of trust in emotions. She was not a prude, and her body should have belonged to Oliver long ago. What she found difficult to accept was disappointment. She had begun to open up emotionally, thinking that even in a loveless marriage, they could still live together peacefully. But she had been too hopeful and too naive!
…
Back to the present.
Natalie disliked these moments of waking up after being unconscious. Her whole body felt weak, and the light was too bright. Even more blinding was Oliver's face.
“Do you want some water?”
Oliver brought a glass of warm water and helped Natalie sit up. Natalie looked at him for a moment. The last thing she remembered before passing out was his serious and cold expression, full of anger. But now, all the anger seemed to be gone. Maybe it was her imagination, but she even sensed a bit of caution in his eyes and actions.
Natalie had been unconscious for a whole day, and after the events of the previous night, she had not eaten or drunk anything. Her lips were dry, and her throat hurt. She took a few sips of the water, feeling it soothe her dry throat.
"Would you like more?" Oliver asked kindly.
Natalie had a sore throat, and swallowing was painful. She shook her head, not wanting to talk, and wrapped herself in her blanket to avoid looking at him.
In the past, anyone who dared to show Oliver such an attitude would have been kicked out by him a long time ago, but now, he only felt heartache.
He said, "You’ll be discharged tomorrow morning. You just have to stay one more night."
Natalie opened her eyes and saw that it was almost dark outside.
Oliver had not slept for two and a half days, and he had been by her side during this time. He was exhausted now that she was safe.
Oliver slowed down the IV drip, took off his shirt, and frowned at the clothes he hadn't changed in two days. He sent a text message to Charles, asking him to bring clothes tomorrow.
Suddenly, the mattress sank behind Natalie, and a strong body pressed against her. Her body tensed, and she screamed, "Get away from me!"
Oliver felt as though his heart had been pierced. He pulled Natalie closer and asked, "Did I hurt you last night?"
Natalie did not respond, as if she had not heard him. If she could not make him leave, then she would not waste more energy on him.
Natalie's suppressed sobs were barely audible, but they tore at Oliver's heart.
"Natalie, talk to me!" Oliver said with a frown, feeling more and more uneasy. He held her tighter in his arms, trying to soothe and calm her down. In his 25 years of life, this was the first time he was so patient. He was clearly in a bad mood, but he still had to be gentle and kind.
Natalie's eyelashes trembled, and tears inexplicably fell.
Did he regret it? Why should he have the right to regret after hurting her so much?
Natalie buried her face in the soft pillow, hiding her tears from Oliver.
…
Following Oliver's instructions, Charles bought a new phone for Natalie, the same model as Oliver's but in a different color.
Natalie did not refuse, after all, her phone had been broken by Oliver. She did not know that Jane had come earlier, so she sent Jane a text message to let Jane know she was safe and not to worry about her.
Before leaving the hospital, Rosy checked Natalie's condition again. She was relieved to see that Natalie’s complexion had improved, and she no longer looked as weak and tired as when she arrived. However, her eyes still held a sense of sadness, not as bright and happy as when they first met.
In her mind, Rosy cursed Oliver once again for not taking care of his wife!
However, Rosy still felt obligated to speak on behalf of Oliver. She said, "Natalie, after you fainted yesterday, Oliver brought you here himself. He was so worried that his eyes were red. I've known him for four or five years, and it's the first time I've seen him in such a state."
Nervous, frantic, struggling on the edge like a trapped animal. That was Rosy's impression of Oliver at the time.
As Rosy spoke, she secretly observed Natalie's expression.
Natalie looked down at the needle mark on the back of her hand. The tiny brown dots that had already scabbed over. She was not completely unconscious on the way to the hospital. She vaguely heard his angry roar, going crazy. He held her in his arms and wrapped her in his clothes. The water from her hair wet his shirt, but he did not care at all.
"Oliver has a bad temper, but since he brought you to the hospital, he hasn't left your side for a moment. He took care of you personally, even applying the medicine himself..."
Rosy intended to say some good things about Oliver, but halfway through her sentence, Natalie's face changed.
"Medicine?"
Was the medicine he applied also on her body?
Natalie blushed, and there was a hint of annoyance on her face.
Rosy understood her thoughts and touched her nose, a little confused. They had been married for so long, but why was Natalie still so shy?
Rosy recalled the state Oliver was in again yesterday and thought that Oliver must have really fallen for Natalie.
…
The Rolls-Royce drove out of the hospital.
It was currently rush hour, and the traffic was congested.
Natalie had changed into a comfortable cotton shirt. She looked out the window at the nondescript scene silently.
The atmosphere was too oppressive, and Charles did not dare to speak much. He glanced back through the rearview mirror a few times. Oliver’s expression was terrible, and Natalie’s expression was equally as bad. However, he had to say that he had never seen Oliver being so patient and gentle when looking after someone before.
After a while, Charles eventually mustered up his courage and asked, “Young Master, do you still plan to attend Adrian’s engagement party?”
