Chapter501
Oliver went back to the closet, his attention drawn to a notably vacant area—this area had previously been designated for Natalie's clothes, with only two or three outfits remaining, those she had selected herself when they had first become married.
Oliver searched both rooms thoroughly but discovered no sign of Natalie's personal items.
'Why does she leave some of her things behind? Are they not all her belongings? Perhaps, in her mind, her belongings are those she had brought with her or the things she purchased herself,' he thought.
Natalie had come to the Rosewood Estate with very little things. Now that she had left, she only took her personal belongings and important documents with her.
Walking past the bedside, Oliver's gaze was drawn to something slipped beneath a book.
The black text on a white background was very striking. The words, 'Divorce Agreement', were very hard to miss.
Oliver's eyes widened, and he froze. After a moment, he reluctantly read it. The content was succinct.
'The two parties agree to a voluntary divorce. There are no disputes over child custody or education. Personal assets will remain with their original owner.'
Natalie's signature was at the bottom. It was decisively bold.
Oliver let out a sardonic laugh, nearly crumpling the agreement in his grip.
"Voluntary? When did I agree to it? I didn't agree to a divorce!"
Liam, climbing the stairs, was greeted by an angry roar from the master bedroom. With a sigh and a shake of his head, he turned back, knowing that at such a moment, Oliver preferred solitude.
Matters of the heart could only be fixed by oneself.
Oliver collapsed to the floor. He felt like he had fallen into an abyss, his heart in ruins, every breath a struggle.
He had hoped the business trip would afford him more time.
For the first time, Oliver resorted to avoidance tactics, wishing for time to halt, if only to keep her by his side for another day. In the end, he was met with an early and sudden goodbye.
After a while, he looked at the letter from Natalie.
It read:
"Oliver, I hope by the time you're reading this, your work overseas has concluded smoothly. I'm sure I'm only worrying needlessly. Someone as capable as you is surely able to handle everything.
Liam mentioned your grandmother would be back soon. I really regret that I won't be able to meet her, so could you please convey my regards?
Oliver, I'm sincerely thankful for the care and understanding you've shown me this past year, as well as your support for Lucas in his time of need. Despite the challenges between us, I harbor no regrets about taking Hailey's place to marry you. I've even come to feel a bit of gratitude toward the Watson family. You've been a very good husband.
Thank you for entering my life, even if the beginning wasn't perfect. Thank you for letting me marry you, even if our ending isn't a happy one. Goodbye."
Oliver's eyes were glued to the word 'husband'.
"Natalie, did you ever truly love me?"
