Chapter 952: Don't Deny it
Ann had threatened Jane to come to the Watkins family, but it seemed like Jane was eager to step into the Watkins family.
Serving Aurora with much fanfare, it was as if Jane had never seen how the wealthy pampered a pregnant woman.
‘It was so ridiculous,’ Jane pondered.
Three years ago, Jane might have mocked her a bit. Now, she couldn't even be bothered to glance at Ann.
Ann didn't get any reaction from Jane. The irritation almost choked her.
"Mrs. Clark, I'll take Ms. Watkins to her room," Sadie said, breaking the silence.
Ann waved her hand, signaling Sadie to go, muttering, "You're really getting off easy!"
Sadie led Jane upstairs and opened a guest room door, saying, "Ms. Watkins, you'll be staying in this room from now on. Your belongings are still in your original room and we haven't touched them."
"Okay, thank you." Jane was taken aback, still processing the situation.
Anthony had said he would change Jane's room, and he really did.
Jane took a quick look around the guest room, which was about 500 square feet. The decoration wasn't particularly refined, but it was decent and error-free, just a basic guest room. However, it was much better than the small space by the staircase she had before.
" Mrs. Clark agreed to change my room?" Jane asked with interest, not afraid that these words might anger Ann and get her moved back to the storage room.
"Ms. Dewar did something wrong, so Mrs. Clark wants to make amends," Sadie replied.
Jane looked at Sadie skeptically, feeling that something was off about what she said.
For instance, Sadie specifically told Jane that no one had touched her belongings.
Also, the incident where Jane got oatmeal spilled should only be known by Aurora and Jane. Even Sadie, accustomed to the secrets of the wealthy, could guess the reason. She shouldn't be so certain that Aurora had played a trick.
Moreover, Sadie specifically mentioned Ann, giving Jane the impression that Sadie was trying to speak well of Ann.
Jane wasn't going to marry into the Clark family, so there was no point in easing the tension between her and Ann in front of Jane.
Jane couldn't figure it out and didn't want to waste her time on these people. After thanking Sadie, she went downstairs to get her clothes and personal items.
She happened to see Ann coming out of the kitchen with a servant carrying a tray with a small bowl on it.
"Wait a minute," Ann requested.
Jane stopped in her tracks at the command.
Ann, in a commanding tone, said, "Don't you know the rules when you're a guest in other’s house? The host just came back from the hospital, so you should at least show some concern."
It took Jane two seconds to realize that the "host" meant Aurora.
"Isn't Aurora not married into your family yet? How is she the host already?" Jane, without thinking, blurted out her true thoughts.
She really wanted to curse Ann out.
Ann was stunned for a moment, her face darkening. "She's Anthony's fiancée carrying Anthony's child. She will soon be the lady of the Clark family. How is she not the host?"
Ann sneered at Jane. "Jane, do you still want to become the lady of the Clark family? Don't even think about it!"
"I really haven't thought about it. It’s you who thought a lot," Jane retorted.
Ann turned dark with anger. It had been a long time since she had encountered such an impolite woman!
"Go! Take this nourishing soup to Aurora," Ann ordered Jane, then warned the servant, "Keep an eye on her. If Aurora suffers even a bit, you'll all be punished!"
The servant, frightened, lowered her head. "Yes!"
"Anyone would think this is some feudal society with punishment." Jane sneered, temporarily abandoning her plan to get her luggage and turning to head upstairs.
As she walked, she asked, "Which room is Aurora in?"
The servant, carrying the soup, led the way. "The room is at the end on the left on the third floor."
The Clark family's small villa had three floors above ground and two basements. The third floor was the domain of the family.
The servant knocked on the door. After hearing a voice from inside saying "Come in", she pushed the door open.
Aurora was lying in bed reading a parenting book. She still needed to stay in bed to protect her pregnancy and wasn't supposed to be discharged from the hospital yet. But Aurora insisted on coming home to avoid giving Jane and Anthony any alone time, even if it meant risking her health.
At least this way, Aurora could keep an eye on Jane at all times and feel more at ease.
"Ms. Watkins," Aurora said, visibly surprised to see Jane. She clearly hadn't expected Jane to come.
Jane raised an eyebrow in response, while the servant placed the soup beside Aurora.
"Ms. Dewar, this is nutritious soup. Mrs. Clark had someone deliver the nutrients for you. Please have some to nourish yourself," the servant babbled.
Aurora nodded in thanks and asked the servant to set the soup aside. "Ms. Watkins, I'm sorry to make you see this. It's my first pregnancy. With the complications, Ann is just being overly cautious."
Jane looked at Aurora calmly, waiting to see what else she would say.
Aurora paused and then added, "But Ms. Watkins, don't be too surprised. I heard that when Mrs. Green was pregnant, her husband's mother was also attentive."
"Mrs. Green from the Green family?" Jane frowned in confusion. "Who? Why are you bringing her up?"
If it were someone else, they might think Aurora was just trying to show that other wealthy families also take such care of their pregnant daughters-in-law.
But Jane wasn't an average Joe.
Having grown up in a wealthy society and once being the top socialite, Jane had a keen sense for the subtle maneuvers among these women.
"Mr. Green used to pursue you," Aurora said.
Jane thought hard for a moment before recalling the man she had pushed to the back of her mind three years ago.
Indeed, Joe had once pursued Jane fervently. He started by trying to win over Jovan. After Jane came of age, he began his pursuit in earnest. Jane rejected him multiple times, but Joe persisted until Anthony cornered him in a quiet alley, beating him up.
After the Watkins family fell, Joe followed his family's wishes and married Patricia, the daughter of a family friend.
"What do you mean?" Jane really didn't want to argue with a pregnant woman, but Aurora seemed determined not to let Jane off the hook.
"I..." Aurora paused.
"Are you trying to tell me that if I had agreed to marry into the Green family, I'd be pampered instead of being mocked here? Or are you saying that the man I once looked down on is now out of my reach?" Jane continued.
"I didn't..." Aurora explained.
"Don't deny it," Jane said impatiently.
