Chapter 1099 Friends Who Aren't Close
"Aurora, what are you doing?" Kimberly scolded sharply, quickly coming down the stairs and taking the baby from her arms to protect it.
"Your son isn't coming back, and you don't care?" Aurora glared at Kimberly. "Does he look like he's in a marriage with me? He hasn't even spent a month at home since we got married!"
Aurora originally thought Hubert liked her, but after getting married, she realized that to Hubert, she was just a suitable woman to be a wife.
Marriage and having children didn't stop him from finding women outside.
"Men are busy with social engagements; isn't it normal for them not to come home at night?" Kimberly retorted, unwilling to back down.
"Is he busy with social engagements or busy pleasing other women? We both know the truth!" Aurora shouted.
Kimberly asked back, "Isn't it normal for men to have a few women outside? You don't have a job, and your family background is ordinary. You should be content with being Mrs. Aurora Clark! How did our family end up with such an ungrateful daughter-in-law like you!"
Kimberly handed the child to a servant, instructing her to take the baby away. "Aurora, how dare you criticize my son! Don't think I don't know you're still hung up on Anthony! Stop thinking about Anthony. Jane is already pregnant and living in the Clark Manor, enjoying the treatment you once had. You should obediently give birth to children for our family, or there are plenty of people willing to be Mrs. Aurora Clark of our family!"
Aurora's expression froze, and she asked in disbelief, "Jane moved into the Clark Manor? Ann agreed?"
How could that be? Ann hated Jane so much. Was it just because Jane was pregnant with Anthony's child?
Why could Jane have Anthony's child and even gain Ann's approval, while her child was Hubert's?
Why is it like this? She couldn't accept it, wouldn't accept it! She had to make Jane suffer; Jane was the woman who ruined her life!
The news of Jane moving into the Clark Manor quickly spread through the upper-class circles of Southvale .
Everyone was shocked, and a few wealthy ladies who were close to Ann couldn't help but want to find out more.
So the next day, they arranged to meet Ann, and several wealthy ladies came to the Clark Manor to play cards.
Jane noticed that Ann had quite a gambling habit. In the three days since she moved into the Clark Manor, she saw Ann playing cards every day, sometimes going out to play, sometimes playing online at home with a tablet.
In the entertainment room of the Clark Manor, several wealthy ladies came in with their bags and started looking around as soon as they entered. It took Ann a while to notice their strange looks. She asked, "Are you looking for something?" The three wealthy ladies exchanged a glance, and one of them smiled and said, "Ann, I heard you bought a family minivan a few days ago, similar to the one I bought for my daughter-in-law." Ann thought to herself, 'the one I bought was three million dollars more expensive than the one you bought.' "Yes," she simply replied.
"Who did you buy it for? I don't see anyone in your family needing a family minivan," another lady said, clearly hinting at something. Ann had already guessed what they were trying to find out, but she didn't plan to hide it.
Ann replied, "The Watkins girl is pregnant with my son's child, so we brought her back to take care of her." "Really? I heard you were particularly unhappy with the Watkins girl," the lady continued saying. "Jane and my grandchild are different." Ann hadn't forgotten that the lady speaking often bragged about her twin grandsons. But the twins were conceived through IVF, not conceived naturally; what was the point of showing off? "Even if they're illegitimate, they're still my grandchildren," Ann said. Hearing the word "illegitimate" from someone else was particularly grating, even though Ann had said it herself.
"Even if they're illegitimate, they're still children of the Clark family, far more distinguished than others." Ann's face showed some displeasure. She shouldn't have invited this woman from the Corporation family!
As soon as Ann finished speaking, footsteps were heard from a distance.
The entertainment room door was open, and the ladies saw a graceful figure walk by.
"Ann, did you invite another guest?" one of the ladies asked deliberately.
Another added, "Isn't that Jane? Aren't you going to invite her in? Even if she's fallen on hard times, she's still part of your family now."
Invite her in? They just wanted to watch a show. Ann knew exactly what they were thinking.
After being friends for over a decade, they always played together when there was nothing to do and watched each other's misfortunes when there was.
Ann didn't want to invite Jane in because it felt like she was introducing her future daughter-in-law to them.
Jane wasn't worthy of being her daughter-in-law.
Ann was about to refuse when a thought flashed through her mind, instantly changing her decision.
"Invite Ms. Watkins in," Ann said to a servant nearby.
Jane knew Ann had guests upstairs, but she didn't expect Ann to invite her in.
In her eyes, she and Ann had agreed that her role was simply to carry Ann's grandchild.
There was no need for a carrier to meet her friends.
Jane was wearing a long, water-red dress today, with a shawl over it, making her look both beautiful and gentle. The wealthy ladies, who were used to seeing celebrities, couldn't help but be impressed.
"Jane, come here." Before Jane could say anything, Ann stood up and offered her seat to Jane.
Jane thought, 'What is Ann up to now?'
Ann said, "Play a few rounds for me. If you win, you keep it; if you lose, I'll take it."
Jane remained suspicious.
Did Ann get out of bed on the wrong side today?
"Hurry!" Ann urged Jane, pushing the still-dazed Jane into the seat and emphasizing again, "Play well."
Jane was silent for a moment, then nodded in agreement.
Who cared what Ann was planning? In any case, if she won, it's hers; if she lost, it's on Ann. It's a can't-lose deal, no reason not to go for it.
For the next two hours, the sound of Jane winning echoed continuously in the entertainment room.
As they watched, the pile of money next to Jane grew larger, while the other three ladies saw their stacks shrink. With each card Jane picked up, their nervousness grew.
Ann, sitting nearby, never stopped smiling. Seeing the other ladies' faces grow darker, her smile only widened.
