Chapter 955: Questioning
After Anthony finished speaking, he didn't give Jane and Aurora a chance to respond. He left Jane's guest room and smoothly closed the door behind him.
All sounds were cut off from the room.
The room returned to silence.
Jane blinked and realized something was off.
The room had good soundproofing. Although Jane and Anthony's conversation wasn't quiet, it wasn't loud enough for Aurora to hear from the third floor, unless Aurora was standing close to Jane's room, eavesdropping on purpose!
Jane knew Aurora was wary of her, but she didn't expect Aurora to be so cautious that she'd stay up late just to eavesdrop.
After Anthony's disturbance, Jane was wide awake.
She took out her laptop again, intending to continue working. But Anthony's reminder kept echoing in her mind. She couldn't focus, let alone any artistic inspiration.
Jane gave up on editing photos and got up to drink some water. She felt the chill of late autumn seeping through the window cracks, biting into her skin. But it was bearable. The temperature here was much milder than in Paykston.
‘Remember what I said’ from Anthony sounded cryptic, but Jane understood what Anthony referred to. His earlier statement ‘I won't let you go’ meant he wouldn't marry Aurora.
Jane hadn't taken Anthony's words seriously before, but now she suddenly sensed something fishy.
From what Jane knew about Anthony, he was a very responsible person. Otherwise, he wouldn't have endured so much to avenge his father by infiltrating the Watkins family for years, even lowering himself to be her bodyguard and putting up with her difficulties.
Therefore, if Aurora was carrying Anthony's child, he had no reason not to marry her.
Even if Anthony didn't like Aurora, he wouldn't wrong the baby.
Jane had a bold guess that the child Aurora was carrying wasn't Anthony's at all.
But that seemed impossible because Anthony was too proud to raise a child from someone else.
And Ann wouldn't agree to a woman carrying another man's child becoming her son’s wife, let alone treasure her so much.
Jane couldn't figure it out and didn't want to think about it anymore. People could change. Maybe Anthony had changed.
Anyway, Jane was determined not to get involved in the mess between Anthony and Aurora.
Outside the door.
Aurora stared at the closed door, slowly recovering from her shock and disappointment. Looking at Anthony, she was overwhelmed by a shiver of fear that crept up her spine.
"Anthony..." Before Aurora could speak, Anthony had already turned and headed upstairs.
Anthony, with his tall stature and long legs, walked faster than most people at a normal pace. Aurora, holding her pregnant belly, couldn't keep up even at a brisk walk and almost stumbled.
Throughout the whole process, Anthony didn't spare Aurora a single glance.
Aurora remembered a scene she had secretly witnessed in Paykston. Jane had come out of a mall, saying she was tired. Anthony had looked at Jane with an expression, seemingly saying, "You're so troublesome." Then he had crouched down in front of Jane and said, "Get on."
That was the first time Aurora realized that the cold and tough Anthony could also kneel and bow before a woman.
Aurora didn't expect Anthony to treat her the same way he treated Jane. She hoped Anthony could spare her just a little more attention.
However, after waiting for so many years, even after becoming Anthony's fiancée and carrying his child, he still hadn't reached out to her.
"Anthony!" Just as Anthony was about to open his bedroom door, Aurora called out to him.
Aurora's room was opposite Anthony's, arranged by Ann who hoped that their relationship would progress by being so close.
Anthony stopped and turned around, waiting for Aurora to speak.
"Anthony, why were you in Ms. Watkins' room at that time?" Aurora asked nervously.
"Then why were you at her door at this hour?" Anthony retorted.
Anthony didn't believe Aurora's excuse. Since Jane found it suspicious, he naturally did it too.
"I..." Aurora went blank in her mind, unable to come up with any reason.
Aurora couldn't admit that she was deliberately keeping an eye on Jane, staying up late just to see if anything would happen.
Pregnant women often suffered from insomnia, which was especially true for Aurora.
"Enough." Seeing that Aurora couldn't come up with a reason, Anthony didn't want to waste time waiting for her to fabricate one.
"Aurora, I'm not interested in why you did it, but..." Anthony paused. "If you ever lay a hand on Jane again, your situation won't be any better than it is now."
A string in Aurora's heart snapped at that moment.
"Do you think my situation is good now?" Aurora looked up at Anthony, tears streaming down her face.
Aurora questioned, "Anthony, do you think my situation is good? You're supposed to be my fiancé, but I find you in your ex-girlfriend's room in the middle of the night! I'm carrying your baby, but I was hospitalized because of your ex-girlfriend. You haven't shown me any concern. All you talk about is Jane. Is this what you call a good situation?"
"You can tell my mother tonight's events, but..." Anthony ignored Aurora's accusations. "If you dare to make up anything else, you'll regret it."
Anthony couldn't bring himself to ask Aurora to keep tonight's events a secret from his mother.
"Anthony!" Aurora yelled.
Without any hesitation, Anthony opened his bedroom door and closed it.
He shut out both Aurora and her voice.
Aurora felt a searing pain in her chest, so intense that she could hardly breathe. She leaned against the wall, crying and repeatedly asking herself, "Why?"
"Ms. Dewar." Suddenly, a pair of warm hands supported Aurora.
Aurora came to her senses, expecting it to be Ann, but it wasn't.
Aurora shivered and cried, "Sadie..."
"Ms. Dewar, are you alright? Should I call a doctor for you?" Sadie saw a flash of disappointment in Aurora's eyes.
It was natural to be disappointed that it wasn't Ann. If Ann woke up and saw Aurora crying with her pregnant belly, no one would get any sleep that night.
Jane was worried that something might happen to Aurora because of her pregnancy, so she only sought out Sadie, the only person in the house who had shown kindness to her.
