Chapter 795 Patience Exhausted
Natalie felt it would be better to sit outside rather than find a random spot indoors. It seemed these people were unaware that she spoke French fluently. They discussed her openly without even lowering their voices.
"Did you hear that? They all think you and Oliver aren't a good match!"
A female voice came from above Natalie's head.
Natalie looked up to see Nola in a black couture dress, gazing down at her with an arrogant expression.
Natalie stood, meeting Nola's gaze. Seeing the high heels on Nola's feet, she murmured, "I kind of regret not wearing high heels."
"What did you say?" Nola asked, thinking she had misheard.
"Are you trying to provoke me by wearing high heels? Even in flats, I'm as tall as you, and it’s insulting," Natalie replied with a gentle smile. She continued to say, "Nola, forgive me for being blunt, but are you really so eager to be a third party in someone’s marriage? Even if you harbor such thoughts, shouldn't you be trying to seduce Oliver instead? What's the point of bothering me?"
Natalie’s tone was firm. Since Nola, who had wanted to interfere in her marriage, had approached her repeatedly, she saw no need to be polite.
The surroundings grew quieter.
Being a mistress was looked down upon. The crowd knew that Nola's aunt had been John's mistress. However, when people remarked that Natalie was not suitable for Oliver and that he saw her merely as a plaything, Nola felt confident.
"Natalie, I'm merely stating facts. You're overthinking things. Moreover, based on your words, it seems like you acquiesced that you'll eventually leave Oliver?"
"Eventually leave?"
Natalie took a step closer to Nola, tilted her head, and smiled as she said, "You know what? Two years ago, someone said the same to me. Now, that person is no longer alive."
Her voice grew lower, taking on a threatening quality. However, she still maintained an elegant and graceful smile on her face. She spoke in French, but her pronunciation was impeccable and her wording was precise.
Those who had casually remarked that Natalie would be abandoned and that Nola was more suitable for Oliver now appeared visibly uncomfortable. They had not expected that Natalie was also proficient in French. Many of them only spoke one language.
"Natalie, are you openly threatening my safety?" Nola responded fearlessly, "With your words, I could easily stir up trouble for you, giving you a motive for murder. Remember, this is France, not Yuuis. We're in the Norton family's territory, so you should tread carefully."
The other guests remained silent, most thinking that Natalie was too arrogant. In their view, Nola had John's support and was far nobler than Natalie, who apparently came from no significant background.
In fact, Natalie found these people exhausting to deal with. It was even more exhausting than interacting with the prestigious royal families back in Yuuis.
In Yuuis, people might make sarcastic remarks, but they did so subtly. Here, people made no effort to hide the malice in their words.
Natalie’s patience was wearing thin. Since Oliver had told her she did not need to be nice to these people, she stopped trying.
As for Lucas, judging from Lilian's dismissive attitude toward these people earlier, it seemed she did not care about them either.
"I didn't mean that, Nola," Natalie said calmly, "It seemed like you misunderstood me when I suggested you try to seduce Oliver. I was being sarcastic. Alas, you don’t seem very much and didn’t catch on."
Nola looked at Natalie in shock, clearly not expecting Natalie to change her attitude so abruptly. Natalie's words were so direct and potent!
The other members of the Norton family fell silent instantly.
'Wasn't it said that those from Yuuis were always tactful and easy to push around? What's wrong with this woman?'
Natalie continued, "I actually understand why you didn't approach Oliver. After all, compared to me, you really don't have much to show."
"Don't have much to show?" Nola laughed angrily.
Meanwhile, several guests burst into laughter as if they had heard the funniest joke, openly displaying their mockery.
"Miss, it is said that Yuuisians are humble, yet you're so arrogant. Nola is a well-known socialite here. How can you compare yourself to her?"
Nola was the niece of John's favorite lover and also carried the title of a well-known socialite in Europe. Although her title might not hold much weight, she was still a prominent figure. Even if John was not the one in charge of the Norton family, who knew if Lilian would still be the heir of the Norton family in decades to come since Isaiah only had one daughter?
In the eyes of everyone, it was not wrong to secretly support John.
Natalie brushed off the ridicule and disdain from the guests and addressed Nola calmly.
"Nola, in terms of professional ability, I'm at the top of my field among my peers, while you're merely skilled in spending money and socializing. When you came all the way to Paykston, I didn't notice you making any useful connections."
She continued, "As for personal accomplishments, I'm fluent in five languages and have a working knowledge of several minor languages. As for you, it seems like you can't even speak German. Otherwise, you wouldn't have pushed me out yesterday to handle the situation. What can you really compare with me?"
"What you mentioned are merely your strengths," Nola retorted, her tone dismissive and proud as she glanced at the other socialites, "Musical instruments, painting, flower arrangement, jewelry appraisal, style—these are what a socialite should know. What you just mentioned are things people like us don't need!"
The other socialites exchanged knowing smiles. Their expressions seemed to convey that the skills Natalie mentioned were only necessary for the lower-class people who must work hard for a living. As for people like them, they only needed to indulge in leisure and pleasure.
"Natalie, since you seem to have free time, why don't you compete with Nola in something simple, like playing the piano?" one socialite suggested.
As she spoke, the socialite shared a knowing look with Nola, clearly showing her support.
At the same time, Nola looked at Natalie confidently.
Natalie was momentarily speechless. These people should not attempt such tricks in front of her; their lack of subtlety was all too apparent. From the glance they exchanged, it was clear that piano was Nola’s forte.
Although Natalie was skilled in the cello and violin, her piano skills were merely notable among amateurs, not comparable to those of a professional.
