Chapter 269 I Won't Let You Get Away with It!
Lilian's eyes widened in disbelief as she exclaimed, "Lucas, how can you be so shameless?"
She momentarily struggled to recall Lucas's name.
"Look at her, calling me shameless," Lucas said, turning to his sister. "I've been cooking for her non-stop these past few days. And when she mentioned she was scared at night, I stayed by her bed until she fell asleep; only then did I go to sleep on the couch. Look at Oliver’s cousin. Natalie, you’re so capable; you won’t have a problem finding a husband. Why don’t you…”
"Brat, regarding ‘Well’...”
Oliver paused mid-sentence and looked at Lucas meaningfully.
Lucas's eyes slightly widened as he looked at Oliver vigilantly. He was not ready to disclose his true identity to his sister. He still wanted to maintain the image of a harmless, adorable little puppy.
Oliver smiled disdainfully.
Natalie eyed both Oliver and Lucas with suspicion, puzzled by their antics.
"Oliver, why did you stop speaking?" Lilian asked while devouring her food. At the same time, she thought to herself, ‘Natalie’s cooking is phenomenal! I want to eat every day!’
Oliver cast a glance at Lucas before saying, "Brat, finish up your food and leave.”
“Oliver, call him Lucas,” Natalie interjected, feeling helpless, “He’s already 16. How can you keep referring to him as ‘brat’?”
Lucas sighed dramatically. “That’s what he thinks of me after all…”
Lilian, catching on to Lucas's intentions, said, “Are you trying to stir up trouble between Oliver and Natalie, so they would get a divorce? Just because I’m stupid doesn’t mean that Oliver is… No, wait, I’m not stupid! In any case, it’s wrong to encourage people to do such things!”
The argument between Lilian and Lucas resumed.
Natalie, feeling somewhat helpless, had grown accustomed to their dynamic and chose not to intervene.
Despite the longstanding friction between Oliver and Lucas, they seemed to coexist quite comfortably.
Even as Lilian voiced her complaints about Lucas's antics, it appeared they got along fairly well.
…
After dinner, in a surprising turn of events, Oliver and Lucas, typically at odds, went upstairs together for a discussion.
Lilian, seated on the sofa, occasionally stole glances at Natalie, her unease barely concealed.
"Is there something you want to say to me?" Natalie took the initiative to ask.
"Yes, I... I wanted to say thank you. Although Lucas bullied me, he indeed saved me. If it weren’t for him, I would’ve been kidnapped by Henry’s men,” Lilian said. Fear still lingered in her heart.
"I'm relieved you're safe. Can you tell me exactly what happened?"
Lucas had not disclosed the full story to Natalie, merely mentioning over the phone that he had apprehended two individuals.
"It's nothing," Lilian quickly replied, then added, "Actually, I'm not entirely sure of the details myself. I awoke the following day to find those two kidnappers bound by Lucas in the living room, their faces covered in doodles, stripped of their clothing... They were utterly defeated, devoid of any will to resist. The embarrassment of it all is just too much to bear!"
Lilian shuddered at the recollection, then remarked, "Natalie, compared to your brother, you're much gentler!"
Natalie had assumed the kidnappers only had their heads shaved; she had not anticipated such humiliation.
‘How miserable!’
Lilian, however, was not preoccupied with this matter. She suggested, "Natalie, if you need someone to watch over me again, please don’t choose Lucas. He always bullies me!”
Natalie, slightly taken aback by the notion of a 'next time', thought about it for a moment before she said with a smile, "If there is a 'next time', it might still be Lucas. We don't have many options, and only Lucas or Jane are up to the task. You're familiar with Jane, aren't you? If she were in charge, you'd truly understand what being bullied feels like."
"The famous socialite?" Lilian recognized the name and immediately said, "No way! Despite her beauty, she's notoriously fierce. I've heard stories of her winning fights against groups since she was young!"
Natalie smiled knowingly. "The stories are true."
Lilian wore an expression that seemed to ask, ‘What kind of devils are your friends?’
Lilian, always ready to chat, began voicing her complaints about Lucas to Natalie.
Natalie listened in silence and soon realized that Lilian's initial resistance toward her had mostly vanished. She could still sense a trace of unease from the young girl.
…
In the study.
A miniature silver modified reconnaissance plane stood on Oliver’s desk.
"This looks familiar," Lucas remarked, picking up the miniature plane to inspect it, "Where did you buy this imitation? Aside from having an excellent taste in my sister, do you lack vision most of the time?"
"Does this low-quality imitation insult your designs?" Oliver asked meaningfully. He had set up this scenario intentionally to gauge Lucas's reaction.
Lucas nodded in agreement and said earnestly, "I crafted it as a mere toy when I first started two years ago. I find it barely passable now."
Lucas possessed an exceptional knack for weapon design. As a pivotal member of the organization, his creations were distinctive and exclusive.
Oliver reclined in his chair, legs crossed. "Not trying to hide anymore?"
"There’s no advantage in hiding it from you," Lucas said, surveying Oliver's study, "And I’m not worried about you telling my sister."
"Really?" Oliver raised an eyebrow.
“You don’t want my sister to worry,” Lucas said confidently. He could tell Oliver cared about Natalie, at least for now. He elaborated, "Once my sister realizes that I’m involved in designing weapons and participating in dangerous activities, she’ll focus her attention on me. I’m sure you don’t want that."
Oliver was defeated by these words.
