Chapter 449
Oliver paused from slicing fruit at the mention, looking at Lucas with eyes that seemed to see through his thoughts.
When Oliver returned to slicing the apple, Lucas sighed in relief. Then, he mumbled, “What do I think of her? I think her degree might be forged.”
Natalie was tempted to knock some sense into her little brother. What was he thinking? With that attitude and those words, he was going to end up a bachelor for life! For a moment, she felt she was being absurd for thinking there was something between Lucas and Lilian.
"Here," Oliver said, handing Natalie a plate with the apple he had just sliced into small pieces.
Natalie did not want Lucas to catch on to the tension between them. So, her response was a cool glance as she took the plate from him.
Oliver had barely let out a sigh of relief when Natalie picked up a piece of apple with a fork and extended it toward Lucas.
"Thanks!" Lucas exclaimed, ready to take a bite, but quick as a flash, Oliver seized Natalie’s wrist and directed the apple to his own mouth.
Natalie and Lucas looked at Oliver, rendered speechless by his action.
Casting a dark look at Lucas, Oliver said to Liam, “Liam, can you get the kitchen to prepare apples for him?”
Then, he moved the plate of sliced apples toward Natalie before he said, “These are for you.”
Lucas rolled his eyes. “What? Do you think only my sister is worthy of the apples you sliced?”
“Yes,” Oliver admitted shamelessly.
Lucas could only silently acquiesce.
‘Well, as long as it’s only for my sister, I’ll accept it.’
…
Lucas did not stick around for long. It was Oliver who saw him off. Natalie remained seated in her wheelchair, and since it was already nighttime, neither Oliver nor Lucas were willing to let her go outside.
"My sister might not have mentioned it, but I could tell both of you had a disagreement,” Lucas said casually, leaning against a lamppost. After a year, the slender lines of his physique had filled out slightly, blending a youthful vigor with a more mature presence.
Oliver took drag from his cigarette and glanced sideways at Lucas.
"She hasn’t mentioned it to me, and I will not pry, but you know my position. If you don’t resolve this issue completely, even if my sister forgives you, I won’t," Lucas declared.
"What do you know?"
Oliver did not know much of Lucas. The organization he belonged to was mysterious and lowkey. The organization operated across various sectors, wielding powerful sources of information. Without their network, they would not have been able to navigate safely in a world where powers attempted to court, buy out, or even threaten them.
"The person who caused trouble for my sister is Helen," Lucas said, his gaze dark.
Helen as a suspect was logical.
Oliver had suspected her as well but lacked evidence.
“How do you know?” Oliver asked.
“Some things are real even without evidence. I’m sure you know that very well, Oliver.”
