Chapter 1025 Scheming
"Yes," Anthony replied without hesitation.
"If Aurora had known the child in her belly wasn't yours, how could she have been willing to keep it? You didn't let her abort it, did you?" Jane turned on the light, looking at Anthony in disbelief, as if she were staring at a cold-blooded monster.
This truth was even more terrifying than Jane's daytime suspicion that Anthony had set Aurora up to sleep with someone else.
"It wasn't just me." Anthony began to explain slowly. "Everyone knew she was carrying my child. My mother wouldn't agree to her aborting it, and neither would her parents."
Ann liked Aurora and also liked the kid Aurora was carrying. Aurora's parents just regarded the child as a bargaining chip for Aurora to marry into a wealthy family.
Even if Anthony agreed to let Aurora abort the child, the elders wouldn't relent.
"So, you let her give birth. She gave birth to another man's child, making it impossible for her to become your wife. Especially that man is Hubert."
Jane shook her head and said, "But Anthony, that child did nothing wrong. His birth is indeed a mistake. In this world, there might be only a few people who would love him, maybe none at all! Why should he bear the responsibility for your past and our disputes?"
Anthony appeared indifferent, analyzing the situation like an emotionless machine.
"Jane, it is inherently unfair in this world. Your father's debt made you and Jovan become the debtors. You did nothing wrong, but back then, who else could I turn to but you? Aurora's child is pitiful, but if Aurora hadn't had ulterior motives, this day wouldn't have come. If I had told her in advance to abort the child, she would still be the fiancée my mother arranged for me."
Anthony asked Jane, "In the end, wouldn't I be the pitiful one?"
'I don't love Aurora, but Ann wanted to push Aurora onto me just because of her affection for Aurora. So I would become the debtor,' Anthony thought.
"Jane, humans are social animals. Every action has consequences, just varying in degree."
Jane stared at Anthony without blinking.
Undeniably, every word Anthony said was true.
She thought, 'So, in the end, does the unborn child become a victim and bear the cost ?'
Aurora once desperately wanted to marry Anthony, and now she could only hate that child.
"Anthony, I want to sleep."
Jane ended the conversation, turned around, and stared blankly at the white wall in the distance.
She couldn't sleep.
Her mind was filled with recent events.
Jane didn't pity Aurora, because she brought it upon herself. Anthony wasn't wrong. If Aurora hadn't started this, he wouldn't have schemed against her.
He wouldn't even have had the chance to scheme.
Life wasn't always fair and just.
But for a newborn, it was too cruel.
Maybe ten years later, Jane wouldn't want to see Aurora's child any more, but right now, she felt genuine heartache.
The child had just come into this world and had already done something wrong.
After a while, Jane snapped out of it and suddenly realized there were footsteps approaching. She turned around to see Anthony already a meter away from her.
His steps were slow, and he walked like an elderly man, each step laborious because of the injury on his back.
"Are you crazy? Do you want to ruin your back?" Jane exclaimed, almost jumping out of bed to support Anthony.
Anthony seemed not to hear Jane's words. He gently cupped her face with one hand, his fingers softly caressing her cheek as if to comfort her.
Anthony looked down at Jane seriously and said, "Jane, sometimes being too kind isn't good."
Three days later, Anthony was discharged from the hospital.
But he left in a wheelchair because the doctor wouldn't let him walk.
Anthony had gotten out of bed a few times in the hospital. The doctor had scolded him, saying it would tear the wound on his back.
"You're not locals, are you?" The attending doctor personally escorted Anthony and Jane out. He only knew that these two were important individuals but didn't know their exact background.
Jane nodded.
The attending doctor said, "You need to find a place to stay. For now, it's best to remain here since his injury isn't suitable for long-distance travel. If you must leave, wait at least three more days. And follow-up checkups will be more complicated if you leave now."
Jane looked at Anthony.
Anthony nodded.
The doctor, having no way to deal with such a stubborn patient, could only give Jane a few more instructions.
Clint had rushed over from Southvale to pick up Jane and Anthony, asking about their plans.
"Rent a house," Anthony instructed Clint. "Send important documents via fax, and arrange any unavoidable meetings here."
"Yes."
Clint noted everything down. Fortunately, it wasn't far from Fae City to Southvale, so it was only a bit inconvenient for the executives to come for meetings.
"Mr. Clark, Mrs. Clark asked me where you were a few days ago," Clint mentioned, not having a chance to speak to Anthony alone, so he brought it up in front of Jane.
As he spoke, he quickly glanced at Jane.
Jane looked out the window, pretending not to hear anything.
"What did you say to her?" Anthony asked.
"I said you were on a business trip." Clint didn't mention that Ann didn't believe him and even asked if Anthony had gone to see Jane. But he just said it was a business trip.
"Good, then keep saying that."
"Yes."
Clint was efficient. He firstly took Jane and Anthony to a restaurant for a meal. By the time they finished eating, the house was already arranged.
It was a well-known local mansion, only for rent, not for sale. The mansion was built by a famous family a century ago and had been renovated with new materials to maintain its original decor. It was a popular choice among the upper class.
"Mr. Clark, Ms. Watkins, are you satisfied with this house? I also looked at another property, but it has wooden thresholds, which is not convenient for Mr. Clark's wheelchair. While there is an elevator on this mansion, and the shopping district is just a kilometer to the east, very convenient."
Anthony didn't have high demands for such material things; he mainly followed Jane's opinion.
Jane looked around, not very satisfied, but reluctantly nodded.
The accompanying real estate agent humbly asked, "Ma'am, is there anything you're not satisfied with about this house? If so, please let us know, and we can make improvements."
"Anything?" Jane raised an eyebrow.
Anthony saw the agent nod confidently, waiting to see the show.
Clint looked at the agent sympathetically, silently thinking,' The agent would be in trouble.'
