Chapter 756 You Are Already Going to Be Mrs. Clark
Jane was not very impressed with Aurora, which indicated that Aurora was not particularly outstanding. Since young, Jane had been acquainted with various famous socialites; if they were not excellent enough, they would not leave a lasting impression on her.
However, Jane's impression of Aurora was not entirely superficial, as there were two noteworthy points. First, Aurora was Anthony's companion, and it was clear that she was fond of him. When Aurora looked at Anthony, her eyes were filled with admiration and infatuation, even more so than when Jane was younger. The second point was that Aurora claimed to like her very much, and she seemed to hold her in high regard.
Reflecting on this, Jane could not help but lower her gaze and smile. Aurora was not impressive, but Mrs. Dewar was the impressive one, allowing her daughter to marry the man she loved.
"Jane, I..."
"Mrs. Clark, your future daughter-in-law has arrived, and I don't think you have the time to continue arguing with me. I don't have the patience to listen to you either. I'll take my leave first."
After saying that, Jane turned around without hesitation. She had come to this engagement party for her brother's reputation, and whatever happened here would not affect him.
"Jane, stop right there! I haven't finished yet. Listen to me!" Ann called out from behind, sounding frustrated.
'Stop right there? What right do you have to order me to stop?'
A cold smile appeared on Jane’s face as she casually raised her right hand and waved it without looking back. It was both arrogant and domineering.
The fact that someone like Jane could peacefully stay in the room with Ann for half an hour was already the utmost tolerance.
"Aunty Ann, I... I suddenly remembered that there was something I needed to handle. I'll go out first," Aurora said, holding her dress.
"Wait! Where's Anthony? Why didn't he accompany you?" Ann asked. She was very dissatisfied that she did not see Anthony and Aurora together.
"Anthony... Anthony was entertaining his friends earlier. I don't know if he's still here or not," Aurora said, looking down. She appeared very meek.
Ann nodded with a smile before she said, "Alright, if you have something to handle, go ahead. If you need anything, just tell the servants. Remember, you’re the future mistress of this place!"
Aurora hurriedly left as she held her dress.
After a while, a middle-aged woman hurried over to Ann and said solemnly, "Mrs. Clark, Anthony hasn’t shown up yet, and we can't find him."
Ann's smile froze and her expression changed before she asked, "He's not with his friends?"
"No!" the woman anxiously replied, "We've been looking everywhere for him. This is supposed to be his engagement party, but the groom is nowhere to be found. Others will start gossiping."
Ann bit her lip before she said sternly, "Go find him! Jane is still in the manor. I don't believe he’s not here!"
Ann knew that Aurora, both silly and kind, must have once again covered for her troublesome son and concocted a story.
…
The sound of hurried footsteps echoed behind Jane; it was the sharp tap of high heels on the tiled floor.
There was no one here worth remembering or caring about, so Jane did not even look back. She continued walking without a pause in her footsteps.
"Jane! Jane, please wait! I have something to tell you!" Aurora called out. Her voice was strained with the effort of trying to chase after Jane.
Jane had no desire to see Jane. She was just about to quicken her pace when she suddenly heard a loud crash behind her.
Aurora had fallen to the ground.
Taking a deep breath, Jane stopped and turned around, her expression cold.
Aurora was in pain, gritting her teeth and drawing sharp breaths. She was alone, wearing ten-centimeter-high stilettos and a mermaid evening gown that restricted her movements. She struggled to her feet, leaning against the wall for support. Once upright, it was evident that her right leg was injured.
Jane surmised she had hurt her knee.
"Get to the point. I’ll give you a chance since you fell," Jane said.
Relieved that Jane was willing to talk to her, Aurora said, "Jane, you... you were very rude to Auntie Ann earlier. That’ll only make her dislike you more."
Jane felt as though she had just heard a joke. She retorted, "Rude? Is she my future mother-in-law? Do I need to be polite to her? Has she ever been polite to me? Besides, I have always been known for my arrogance. Hasn't your mother-in-law told you about that?"
Jane tilted her head, her smile both bright and pointed.
"Jane..."
Aurora opened her mouth but was at a loss for words. In Jane's presence, she always felt inferior. She did not have the confidence to lecture the former top socialite, and she felt like she did not even have the courage to speak up. After all, Jane had once been the standard she aspired to reach.
"Jane, do you know?" Aurora began.
"I don't know," Jane interjected, saying, "... and I don’t want to know either. Since you’re only spouting nonsense, I’m not interested in listening to what you have to say!"
Aurora was choked by Jane’s words for a moment, but she was not angry; she knew Jane was simply that kind of person. She hesitated for a moment before she said persistently, "Please just give me a little of your time."
Normally, anyone else with a less gentle attitude or stronger words would have been dismissed by Jane with a curt, 'I'm not interested' before she left without a backward glance. However, the person before her was gentle and calm with no signs of hostility toward her.
To be fair, Aurora was not an interloper between Jane and Anthony. After all, Jane and Anthony were not meant to be and had ended their relationship long ago.
In fact, in this current situation, it seemed as though Jane was the interloper. If she was harsh to Aurora now, she would feel as though she was bullying someone weaker than herself.
"Jane, I have known about you for a long time, but I truly came to understand you after I found out that Anthony liked you. I started paying attention to you and discovered that you're even more outstanding than I had imagined," Aurora said, "I was actually quite ordinary when I was young. Later on, I set you as my goal and continuously studied, always improving myself. I never ranked below the top three in my studies, and I began learning various musical instruments, painting, flower arrangement, and more..."
Without missing a beat, Aurora continued, "Jane, although I don’t have your fame now, I’ll become as outstanding as you, I'll become a woman worthy of Anthony."
After a moment, Jane said lightly, her tone detached, "Is that so? However, you don’t have to work so hard; you’re about to become Mrs. Clark after all."
…
Meanwhile...
"No!"
Natalie pulled Oliver, who had half of his body exposed around the corner, back and hid behind the wall. At the same time, she pressed her back tightly against the wall and closed her eyes. She felt as though her heart was breaking for Jane to the point where it physically hurt.
"Natalie."
Oliver noticed something was off with Natalie and held her waist, gently kissing the corner of her mouth to comfort her. Then, he whispered softly, "Weren't you looking for Jane? Why don't you go out?"
"No."
Natalie shook her head, keeping her eyes closed and holding back her tears.
