Chapter 836 How is Natalie doing?
Oliver carried Natalie all the way to the ambulance and carefully placed her on the stretcher. She lay there quietly, her complexion pale and fragile, as if she might vanish at any moment. Yet, her hands were firmly placed on her slightly protruding belly.
"Mr. Windsor, please have a seat over there for now. If you stand here, we won't be able to properly examine your wife," the doctor said, directing Oliver to move aside. While conducting a preliminary examination on Natalie, the doctor asked about her medical history, "How many months pregnant is she? What happened today? How was her health during the previous trimester?"
Oliver sat numbly in the corner. His eyes were fixed unblinkingly on Natalie as he responded mechanically to each question. Finally, he asked, unable to hide his worries, "Will she be okay?"
The doctor, sensing the intense pressure emanating from Oliver, replied, "The condition of the fetus needs further examination at the hospital to determine more."
He lifted Natalie's skirt slightly. His expression turned grave as he noted, "There's bleeding in her lower body."
"I'm asking about my wife," Oliver clarified, his calm demeanor belying his extreme nervousness.
"The pregnancy is still in its early stages," the doctor explained, looking at Oliver with a hint of surprise, "Even if the fetus cannot be saved in the event of a complication, the mother's condition is not critical."
"The fetus is not the priority. We must do everything possible to ensure her health," Oliver stated firmly.
A brief silence filled the ambulance.
The medical staff, though used to various situations in their field, glanced at Oliver with a mix of curiosity and bewilderment.
"Oliver, there's something I need to confirm," the doctor continued, breaking the silence, "Is this patient really your wife? Is the child she is carrying yours?"
If the situation was not so serious, Oliver would have asked the doctor how he became a doctor with his level of intelligence.
Oliver stood at the end of the hallway, using the designated smoking area. This was the second time Natalie had been hospitalized since her pregnancy began. Despite his cautious efforts, he felt he had failed to protect her adequately.
"Oliver, I've found out what happened. The elevator incident wasn't an accident; it was orchestrated by Helen. She tampered with the controls and operated the elevator, causing it to free fall. Fortunately, the elevator's safety mechanism activated at the last moment, slowing it down," Jamie said, his expression solemn, "We've detained Helen in a meeting room the hospital let us use. Would you like to see her?"
"Let's go," Oliver replied icily.
Why would he not see Helen?
As he reached the elevator, the elevator chimed. The doors slid open, revealing Samuel, who looked extremely troubled.
"Looking for your mom?" Oliver asked abruptly.
Samuel furrowed his brows, confusion spreading across his face as he said, "I heard about Natalie's accident. I came to visit…”
Samuel stopped speaking abruptly. After a beat, he asked, ''What happened to my mom?"
A sense of dread filled Samuel. He recalled how his mother had visited Susan in prison a few days ago and had been unusually quiet since returning. He had been worried about Natalie, and coincidentally, a business trip brought him to Paykston just in time to learn of the hospitalization.
Oliver, consumed by anger, was not in the mood to talk. In his view, Natalie had no connection to the Hastings family, much less to Helen.
Samuel was speechless. It seemed like the tenuous bond he managed to establish thus far was going to be ruined by Helen's action.
"Samuel, Natalie's accident this time wasn't accidental; it was caused by your mother," Jamie interjected, seeing Oliver's reluctance to explain, "Helen is upstairs right now. Would you like to join us?"
Jamie had already explained that much, he might as well invite Samuel to come over. Moreover, if Oliver wanted Samuel to leave, he would not have engaged further.
Samuel nodded and asked, "How's Natalie doing?"
Jamie glanced at Oliver, noticing his reluctance to share details, and chose to remain silent with a polite smile.
Samuel did not receive any updates on Natalie's condition, leaving him increasingly worried. However, since Oliver had the time to see Helen, it meant that Natalie's condition was stable.
At the entrance to the meeting room, two security guards stood alert. They recognized Oliver and promptly opened the door for him.
As soon as the door opened, a commotion could be heard.
"I want to see Oliver! I demand to speak with the Hastings family!"
Helen's voice was loud and defiant.
"Why are you detaining me arbitrarily? This is illegal imprisonment, and I'll sue you!" Helen threatened, "Don't stop me! Believe it or not, I'll shout, saying that you guys are trying to rob me! Do you think you can do whatever you want just because you have Oliver's support? I'm a member of the Hastings family. I'm going to call my husband! I'm going to call my son!"
Helen looked more like a shrew than a member of the Hastings family at this moment.
"The person you want to see is here," Oliver announced calmly.
Despite her earlier demands to see Oliver and Samuel, Helen's demeanor shifted to fear upon seeing Oliver. However, spotting Samuel seemed to reignite her hope.
"Samuel! Look, they're all bullying me!" she cried out, rushing toward him. However, before she could reach him, two bodyguards restrained her, causing her intense discomfort.
"Let me go!" she pleaded, hoping to gain Samuel's sympathy.
Oliver, with a menacing calmness, confronted Helen, asking, "How likely do you think it is that I could kill you and get away with it?"
In fact, he had considered this for a brief moment.
Helen's forced composure shattered.
"Oliver, murder is illegal, you can't do this!" she cried out. Then, turning to Samuel in desperation, she continued, "Samuel, are you just going to stay silent? He just said he wanted to kill me!"
"Mom, what did you do to Natalie?" Samuel's voice was weary, his patience thinning.
"What do you mean? I haven't even met her. What could I have done?" Helen retorted defiantly. However, she looked guilty as she turned away.
"Helen, do you think we would arrest you without evidence?" Jamie interjected sharply, "Your daughter has been imprisoned for attempted murder; it seems you want to join her on the same charge."
Helen struggled against the guards' hold, her frustration evident as she shouted in a voice mixed with anger and desperation, "What attempted murder!?"
