Chapter 937 Morality, Unnecessary

James muttered to himself guiltily.

From the outset, the Hastings family had suspicions about Susan's heart condition. Susan had been raised in their household, and they were familiar with her health history. Additionally, after Susan's medical parole application was granted, the Hastings family engaged a private doctor to assess her, and the doctor affirmed that she was in good health, aside from some malnutrition.

However, the Hastings family tacitly agreed to keep this matter a secret.

Samuel decided not to intervene in the situation as Susan's sentence wasn't lengthy. Considering the bone marrow match from the previous time, Samuel believed that Susan's release was inevitable. The process didn't concern him, as the outcome would be the same regardless.

"Natalie, Susan's imprisonment won't last much longer. She is your half-sister and Lucas's half-sister. You see Lucas as your brother, and you have a strong connection with Susan, who also saved Lucas. Let's just move on from this."

James knew he couldn't win against Oliver. James was born mediocre, so he only knew how to manipulate Natalie.

Even the police officers nearby couldn't help but glance at James. Natalie had already made it clear she didn't acknowledge James, yet he still had the audacity to say such things. It appeared that James had a thick skin. His words didn't indicate any genuine closeness between Susan and Natalie but were rather indirect.

If they were in Natalie's shoes, dealing with someone who had continuously attempted to harm her, steal her husband, and ruin her family, they would have likely resorted to physical violence. They might not have calmly pursued legal action. Additionally, Susan had stolen Natalie's identity and years of affection that rightfully belonged to her as the eldest daughter of the Hastings family.

"Mr. Hastings, Susan is the result of your affair and has nothing to do with Natalie. If you wish to protect her, you can try." Oliver spoke before Natalie could, "Don’t blackmail my wife.”

The words "My wife" immediately defined Oliver's position. He unequivocally supported and protected Natalie. If James dared to harm Natalie in any way, even through moral manipulation, Oliver wouldn't tolerate it.

James didn't dare confront Oliver directly but looked at Natalie with a mix of sternness and pleading.

"Mr. Hastings, you can't persuade me. Morality is out of my concern when it comes to you and Susan.”

Because James and Susan don't deserve it.

James's expression turned sour upon hearing this, particularly after feeling disrespected by Natalie. He clenched his teeth and replied, "Even if you seek revenge, Susan will be released in a couple of years.”

Those present almost burst into laughter upon hearing this word.

"Here, take a look." Oliver handed another document to the police.

The police swiftly perused the contents and directed a significant glance at James, stating, "Mr. Hastings, Susan is not only accused of using unlawful methods to escape from prison but also of plotting to harm Mr. Windsor and his family after her release, and she took concrete steps towards carrying out this plan. This is a serious crime..”

"What?" James was stunned, unable to recall such an incident.

"Mr. Hastings, have you forgotten? Susan had attempted to ram Mr. Windsor and Miss Watson's car. Thanks to Mr. Windsor's private bodyguard and Samuel, She failed. Additionally, Susan's actions resulted in damage to thirteen cars on the main city bridge and caused injuries to twenty-one people.

James's face turned pale.

This incident caused a significant commotion at the time. However, James didn't dwell on it much as Oliver and Natalie chose not to pursue it further, and Samuel handled the aftermath.

"See you in court, Mr. Hastings," Natalie stated. After verifying with the police that someone like Susan, who had intentionally harmed others repeatedly, would not be easily bailed out, Natalie left immediately.

"Miss Watson, wait!" A staff member quickly came out. "Susan wants to see you!"

Because of Susan's multiple past offenses and troublesome behavior, she was not permitted to have a face-to-face conversation with Natalie at a table like other suspects. Instead, she was confined directly in a barred room.

"You have something to say?" Natalie stood coldly outside the bars, calmly looking at Susan inside.

Susan was dressed in a newly released Gucci outfit but was seated on the floor. There was a plain chair beside her, but she appeared to be ignoring it.

That expression was typical of most criminals after confessing. She was ashen-faced and resigned.

Susan took a couple of seconds to sluggishly lift her head upon hearing Natalie's voice.

She not only saw Natalie but also Oliver, who accompanied her.

Susan wasn't surprised. She could easily deduce that someone like Oliver, who cherished Natalie dearly, wouldn't allow her to come alone.

Even at the police station, Oliver wouldn't feel at ease letting Natalie meet this venomous woman alone.

"Natalie, do you think I care about being Susan?" Susan's gaze quickly shifted from Oliver to Natalie.

Natalie frowned slightly but remained silent, waiting for Susan to continue.

If she didn't care, why go through all the trouble of pretending and even getting plastic surgery?

"I know what you're thinking," Susan laughed self-deprecatingly. "Natalie, I have known of you since I was very young. I have been aware of your tricks for as long as I can remember.”

She then started to ramble, "When I was six or seven, before you disappeared, Isabella Corporation used to tell me, 'Sweetie, do you know? You were supposed to be the eldest daughter of the Hastings family, that wealthy family in Tycoon City. The beautiful dresses in the shop windows, the gourmet meals from top private chefs, you could have had them all. But everything that should have been yours was taken by that girl from the Hastings family.

The first time I saw you, you were wearing a beautiful princess dress, not the white one that all little girls love, but a black one. You were like an elegant black swan. Every move, even your gaze, was filled with grace. I envied you. At that time, I was wearing hand-me-down clothes with holes from the neighbor's kids.

"Later, Isabella Corporation sent me to the Hastings family, informing me that by becoming you, I could have everything that was originally mine - money, status, identity, and affection. However, I didn't care about any of that. What I truly envied was your elegance and nobility.

"It may be a child's instinct to depend on their mother. I cried, not wanting to go to the Hastings family, not wanting to leave my mother. However, Isabella Corporation assured me that if I cooperated obediently and pretended to be you, I would have numerous beautiful dresses, endless cakes, and could be just like you, a princess. She also warned me that if I didn't impersonate you as she desired, she would harm me severely, making my life worse than death."

Natalie instinctively frowned.

Susan gazed up at the pitch-black ceiling and exclaimed, "It's unbelievable, isn't it? How could a mother act like that? She was always so kind to me, and I loved her dearly, but she sent me away without a second thought.”

Susan paused, then glanced at Natalie once more, as if recounting a tale: "Do you think it all stopped there? No. After she tampered with the paternity test, she realized that I no longer resembled Natalie, so she sought out Randy Wright to perform plastic surgery on me, the same man previously looked into by Oliver Windsor. My first surgery took place when I was eight years old. I lay on a chilly operating table, filled with fear, but no one came to my aid. In reality, the surgery wasn't the most terrifying aspect.”

Susan paused again, and continued, "The scariest part was that Randy Wright's condition for performing the surgery was my body, even before my first surgery. And he played in different 'unique' ways?"

She was only eight years old at the time.

Natalie furrowed her brow deeply, her mouth opening but unable to make a sound.

"Natalie, I'm not asking for your forgiveness. I just want to make you feel guilty," Susan said painfully, squinting her eyes. "If I had a choice, I would also want to be a good person, but no one gave me that chance. You're lucky."

"Susan, I won't feel guilty because I have done nothing wrong to you," Natalie said. "And you are wrong. I am not lucky. You had many opportunities to make a different choice. But you chose not to be a good person. See you in court."

Susan could have chosen not to destroy Natalie's marriage and life. She could have chosen not to harm Natalie and her family. Earlier, Susan could have chosen not to harm the pregnant Flora or plagiarize Flora's work.

She could always find excuses for her mistakes.

"Oliver, let's go." Natalie took Oliver's hand and walked out.

As they turned to leave, Oliver gave Susan a cold glance.
